With the Fall of Abaddon, Tyria learnt to swim.
I always assumed it was either one of those things that many people could do but we just never happened to see, or that it was our characters specifically who couldn’t swim. (This fit my Proph/Ascalonian character perfectly, since she wouldn’t have seen anything wider or deeper than a river until her first trip to Ascalon City, but was a little harder to justify for my cost dwelling NF/Istani.)
But I actually really like this explaination. I think it would be a fun way to explain the addition in lore.
Might be a bit harder to believe that Kormir also introduced jumping though…
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
it would be hilarious and awesome if that was the real reason we couldn’t swim in guild wars 1 lol.
But Danikat, you could jump.
/jump was great.
Actually, in GW1 the gravity was overwhelming, that’s why you couldn’t swim nor jump.
With the demise of the great destroyer, the planet core got less dense and you were able to jump while advancing and swimming.

Yes. Clearly this explains everything. Better than my theory. I’m surprised this isn’t canon lore.

my assassin was stronger than i gave him credit for. all those jumps and mortal flips.
Assassins used dark arts to jump, remember they were able to shadowstep too.
or they strapped springs to their boots.

Shhhh! don’t let them know…
The gravity was awful anyway.
And to make things more connected now we even have floating rocks in the world. That’s because gravity is failing. Maybe the asura gates are sucking it.

Asura gates are powered by a mystical energy from deep within the world, as the asura gates use it up the planet becomes less dense, and has less gravity. This technology eventually develops into safe power and a large city is made using the benefits of this cheap and efficient power.
But then a small group of rebels finds out where these things are getting their power and start blowing them up to save the planet. Shenanigans happen and it all ends up with some crazy long haired maybe-but-not-quite-dead nut with a sword summoning a meteor to add more density to the planet (and somehow become a god) the meteor takes a really really long time to strike the planet because of the lack of gravity. The evil sword guy hangs out in a crater in the Far Shiverpeaks like a Wiley boss, gets himself killed. And then the world is saved...maybe...who the kitten knows.

You forgot the part in which giant monster awaken to wipe the wolrd’s population due to the damage done to the planet. One in the ocean, one in the desert, one in the shiverpeaks and other one flying… OMG the elder dragons!!
the elder dragons are going to unite themselves and become captain planet, and wipe tyria from the evil races destroying nature.
you heard it here first.

And then the white materia that the slums girl (obviously killed by the guy hiding in a crater) gets summoned by the planet and saves us?
And then a group of emo rebels try to resurrect the bad guy?
Ummm familiar uh?
I wholeheartedly approve of this interpretation of science if it means my engineer can build and fly her own steampunk styled airship.

Kieran swam during War in Kryta, which took place after Nightfall. I can’t remember any other specific mentions of swimming, though I suspect they’re around (just like horses).

i could swear WiK was post EotN?
see? the theory fits. we killed the great destroyer, the gravity loosened up, and kormir taught everyone how to swim, a skill that would be vital for Kieran.

And what was Eye of the North? That’s right, post-Nightfall!
Jesus christ.

i never denied that. i just used the question as a hook to bring up the humorous theory that this forum created a few days back.
This all makes a frightening kind of sense.
My mental image of an Elder Dragon “by our powers combined” moment is fantastic. And actually, you know, there was that whole Zone Green mystery. I think I like Captain Planet better as an explanation for that.
OR
People knew it was possible, but didn’t swim because it was considered in bad taste, because water was connected first to a deposed evil god, and then later to the god of death.
So, you know, it would kinda feel like tempting fate.

Or, and I know this is a crazy thought, but swimming was very easy and very possible. The only reason we didn’t see it was because of A) Game Mechanics, or Our characters never learned how to swim. I mean who wants to swim in 50 pounds of armor anyways, it would suck. If it didn’t kill you.

Oh I’m sorry, frilly ideas…. Um…. The wizard who made all the floating rocks decided to make a spell allowing people to float in water. His spell was hard, and many people ended up flying into space because he weakened gravity on them too much, but he was finally successful.

That’s the spirit!
Also, the wizard was a servant of the elder dragons. That’s like the #1 rule of silly lore theories, you have to connect them to the dragons somehow.

That was the case – we got a few mentions in GW1 about swimming, mostly in Istan I think but I believe there were some in Factions too (particularly Shing Jea and historical comments of before the Jade Sea froze – I’m surprised we don’t see fossilized swimming luxons in jade blocks in GW1 tbh).
Outside, yknow, naga swimming.
It’s a purely mechanical thing and not lore-based for the no swimming or easy jumping in GW1.
But don’t let that stop this thread’s silliness.
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.
Of course the wizard was a dragon champion! I didn’t even say it because I thought it was obvious :P
