Wondering About Possible Future Zones?
ummm…Ascalon Settlement hasn’t moved…it’s in the same location as it was in GW1.
The new capital of Kryta was built after the rise of Zhaitan and the flooding of old Lion’s Arch and the surrounding area.
the Ascalonian Settlement has shifted all the way to where Divinity’s Reach is.
Wut?
I think someone needs (new?) glasses…
Now I’d really like to open up discussion about possible upcoming zones, but also to open up more interesting lore options. An example of this – how has the place of ruling for Humans moved from Lion’s Arch (with Queen Salma and ‘The Battle of Lion’s Arch’ ) towards Divinity’s Reach?
Not sure what that question really has to do with new zones, or for that matter what you mean by it – why is the leadership of Kryta in DR instead of LA? Simple: when Lion’s Arch flooded, Krytan abandoned the city for new high ground, and established Divinity’s Reach. Lion’s Arch was rebuilt by pirates, thus the Krytan royalty settled in Divinity’s Reach, and didn’t get back to LA before pirates rebuilt it.
As for future zones, rather than looking at GW1 to GW2 placements, it’d be better to look at areas in GW2 which have closed gates and unreachable portals to other areas off the map. Of which, I’ve found the following:
- Kessex Hills going east (south of Gendarran) from Garrenhoff; and another going south into the Dominion of Winds from Dominion Killing Zone
- Caledon Forest going east from Dominion of Winds (area) into the Dominion of Winds (city)
- Brisban Wildlands going north from Lionshed Outcrops
- Harathi Hinterlands going east from Hidden Ourobn (I may be wrong on this, it’s actually a wall of boulders, so it may be tied to an event revealing some room or some such).
- Fields of Ruin going south from Blackwing Excavations.
- Sparkfly Fen going west (into the fogged area between Southsun Cove and Sparkfly Fen) from Karinn’s Passage
- Mount Maelstrom going southeast from Judgment Rock.
- Frostgorge Sound going north from Drakkar Spurs (there’s a bit of ice that looks like it could give way to a portal).
And going off of topics of GW2 event interests – there’s western Maguuma Jungle (Malyck’s tree), Crystal Desert (Kralkatorrik), the rest of Orr (Anet should show us some non-corrupted Orr, and there’s plenty of research that the Priory would be interested in), and Far Shiverpeaks (Jormag). In continental Tyria, at least. Other lands are of lesser interest to the NPCs of GW2 and with fewer to no known threats.
But there’s already old threads on this topic anyways.
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.
There was a district in Divinity’s Reach set aside for primarily ascalonian descendants, but the actual ascalon settlement is more or less in the same place. Some of the old locations can’t be found or mapped out precicely anymore because the land has changed so much or it has been built on top of. They couldn’t have the land 100% accurate because we now have a whole new dimension of movement and the explorable land would be too small imo. They did a fairly good job or matching most of it up and including enough landmarks that if you look hard enough you can tell where you are. The Maguuma jungle was always one of my favorite areas and I hope in an expansion soon we get to travel to the Falls and see what’s going on over there ( I suspect that’s where we’ll find the other Tree we know about). Also I know when Kralkatorric rose that a lot of the charr were driven south, but I’m curious to know if there have been operations to retake Blood Legion homelands like they are in the Brand area. There were a lot of interesting things up there too.
Anyone else wondering what ‘ol Rotscale is up to these days? We can almost reach his mausoleum but not quite. Makes me wonder if he was ever influenced by the elder dragon’s influences. He was my arch-enemy in GW1. I never passed up a chance to go smack him around a little bit. I loved when they opened his mausoleum to that mini-dungeon for a short while.

Uh, you mean when Jormag rose the norn were pushed south.
Not the charr. When Kralkatorrik rose he went south and created the Dragonbrand.

I always figured he was killed in GW1.

What doesn’t make sense is the noticeable gap between the entrance to dominion of winds and Lion’s Arch. Claw Island is too close to LA in that map. The wizard’s Castle (tower in gw 1) would be just bordering the Dominion by this map’s logic.

I think I might just be misreading what you’re trying to say, but in case not, the wizard’s tower would be inside the dominion of winds if it hadn’t been moved. Since we can’t see details about what’s inside the dominion, it’s hard to pinpoint a specific spot, not to mention the coastline has changed drastically since the flooding, swaps appeared, old swamps have dried up, ect ect. Yeah some of the landscape is a lot different than GW1 areas but it’s minor details. Once they open up the dominion we can more accurately compare the maps and it might make more sense then.

He’s referring to the supposed boundaries brought up by the Shuttered Gate in Lion’s Arch, where tengu say that on the other side (which leads to the land between Kessex and LA) is the Dominion of Winds. Based on that one tengu, then the Wizard’s Tower and Garrenhoff would be cut off by the wall, meaning it makes no sense for that to be a port town – or for the karka to have managed to attack it (unless they also attacked the Dominion of Winds).
This is wrong, however, as the novel maps show the wall ending before where the Wizard’s Tower would be. And the merchant NPCs along the path to the Shuttered Gate imply that said gate is a recent development since that’s a trade route. Ergo, that land is not part of the Dominion of Winds, but it seems that the tengu are expanding, and making that land theirs.

The core of the Dominion of Winds seems to be the island which housed the Sanctum Cay mission in GW1. In fact, the earliest official GW2 map had a nebulous border surrounding that specific island, marking it as the Dominion of Winds. However, we do not know for sure its full extent, except by extrapolating from its known gates.
As for the map at large….
The Far Shiverpeaks and the Crystal Desert are guaranteed to eventually release. After all, they hold Dragons, and we need to fix that.
The Maguuma Waste is incredibly likely, especially considering the possibility of a new Dragon, there.
The remaining parts of the Southern Shiverpeaks would be nice, but I have no idea if plans to ever take us there exist.
I’d like to revisit the old Charr Homelands – now once again the Blood Legion Homelands, since the Iron Legion has reclaimed theirs – and see how things are up there. But I don’t know how likely it is, unless we get a good Flame Legion story arc or something.
That leaves the Ring of Fire Island Chain, and who knows what Anet will or won’t do with that. It’s off by itself, and despite its climate, I do not know if Primordus nests there or not.
I think Primordus is more likely to still be in the Depths of Tyria, considering he keeps driving races surfaceward AND Destroyers can pop out of the ground almost anywhere. I would LOVE to see more of the Depths – the possibilities for a vast cavern nework, complete with abandoned Asuran cities, would be incredible. (The drawback, of course, is it will likely be as lousy with Destroyers as Orr is with Risen.)
Lastly, we could always get more sea zones. Southsun Cove was a nice addition to the Sea of Sorrows, but it was mostly island, and not much sea. As someone who likes the depth that undersea travel permits us (pun intended), and has actually gotten (mostly) used to combat down there, it would be interesting to see what’s down there. Perhaps some Quaggan are still holding out? Maybe there’s an enclave of Largos somewhere? Surely, when the time comes to face the Deep Sea Dragon, we’ll have to engage it on its turf.
Finally, I definitely agree with Konig – those doors were put there for a reason, and I expect them to be used in good time. (Now, if only they’d do something about the door in the NE corner of Barbarous Shore, Elona – that’s been bugging me for YEARS. Maybe if they ever deliver on GWB for Elona? Please?)

If one were to look at the Shuttered Gate’s placement, it’s impossible for that to be tied to the walls in Kessex and Caledon – both of which match the books’ map perfectly. Simply due to Garrenhoff.
I don’t think the city’s boundaries have changed.
The Maguuma Waste is incredibly likely, especially considering the possibility of a new Dragon, there.
Not to mention the bandit/Nightmare Court/Inquest alliance issue, and Malyck’s tree being to the west of the Maguuma. I except a Maguuma Waste/Magus Falls combo release sometime in the future with all three plot points.

Primordus is underground – he has not yet surfaced. The Ring of Fire has nothing to do with the Elder Fire Dragon. The Ring of Fire has been, until now, Risen territory.

That was said years ago to have been put there for lore purposes only – it’s a hidden corsair route into Vabbi.
