Zhaitan's Motivations: story spoiler
i don’t know.
why did hurricane Sandy do what it did?
that’s what you’re asking.
The elder dragons and their minions are a force of nature, they don’t have deeper motivations than an ant colony.
The other thing is that zhaitan is the first to go down. I rather think of him as the lesser among the elder dragons.
Why is he evil?
All elder dragons want only one thing – destroy all living things in Tyria. That’s them nature. The dragons are destruction, Traeherne told about that in Personal Storyline. I think there’re no motivations for dragons. They just awoke – destroy the world around them – hibernation again. Some kind reference to glaciations on planet Earth.
That’s lore point of this view.
But – in fact – Zhaitan himself does not be serious threat to feel in game. As a player I know “there’s a very very big bad drake in the deep of ancient peninsula”, but do not feel fear about him, until I realy confront dragon.
i don’t know.

Well… if a hurricane had minions who could speak English, sure. Zhaitan has minions who are obviously intelligent and have conversations with the PC. It seems if Zhaitan’s minions are capable of intelligence, so should Zhaitan be.
And destroying the world is pretty hefty and evil, and not really natural. Lions don’t wake up and say “LETS KILL EVERYTHING ON THE SAVANNAH” they just try to satisfied a basic need: hunger.
So what is driving Zhaitan’s desire to destroy the world? Hope that makes sense!

Well, locusts wake up and say “LETS EAT EVERYTHING” It’s something like that. Zhaitan woke up an said “LET’S TURN EVERYTHING UNDEAD, LET’S EAT ALL THE MAGIC”

it’s a hard concept to grasp, but the elder dragons aren’t really animals. they’re beings of destruction. they feed on the world and destroy everything on their path (quite literally if you look at the brand). they don’t have a reason behind it. they’re not being evil. they’re just being.
much like a giant meteor coming towards earth would destroy the planet, but the metor isn’t “evil”.
I’d assume it’s just like your example, they’re lions
They hunger for magic, and so when they’re not sleeping for millenia, they’re destroying/eating.
And I think that the Champions are kinda made out to be smarter than the Dragons, somehow the Dragons give will/intelligence to the Champions and act as PR kinda
I firmly believe that Zhaitan only wants to restore Tyria’s natural gravity
While i agree that the Dragon’s are beings of destruction, that it’s simply part of their make up, it would be wrong to assume that they are just automatic robots of chaos. Jormag for one does his business through whispers and deceit, i’d love to see more of Jormag in future expansions as he seems the most intelligent of the Dragons.
I do agree also that the awe of Zhaitan is a little lacking, maybe it would of been an idea to see him wipe out a town or city at the beginning of the game (not one that was intended to be used in game) just to get over the fact of how powerful he is through the character’s eyes.
The dragons want to consume magic, the more the better. Dragons achieve this with their minions, Zaitan’s minions are the undead. The more minions he has the more can bring magical artifacts and stuff to his mouths.

or lower the sea level by getting rid of all that crap we sunk to the bottom of the ocean (ships, continents, ancient gods, that kind of stuff).

Yeah I played through the story and there is part about the Mouth of Zhaitan trying to consume the magic, etc. I wasn’t sure if there was anything deeper behind their lust for magical artifacts, etc.
Thanks for the replies guys! I’m going to go with my original thoughts – they’re just sorta pissed off for no real good reason. :P
I recall ANET stating in an interview somewhere that the true motivations of the dragons are a spoiler for later acts, and that they’re more than a “force of nature”.
