to me it looks as if it some kind of biodome that keeps vegetation alive amongst the snow

That is the Eye of the North my friend. You should have a blue glowey object in your inventory, click it to go there!

Ah, the memories. It was so awesome when I made it there.
That was the point at which I started falling in love with the Guild Wars franchise.
Before EotN I was all about WoW

Envy how can you have been there to defog it earlier and not recognize it on the map. XD

I love that place, but I sometimes get so sad seeing all those chests laying around locked forever.

That isn’t it defogged, that is the painterly texture of it that exists on the map regardless of if you have been there or not.

As others have said it is the Hall of Monuments, an area for players of Guild Wars 1 to get items they earned. If you played GW1 and linked the account to GW2 your characters should all have a portal stone. Otherwise you can get the portal stone in Lions Arch and explore the small area – however you can’t access the items without having a linked GW1 account.

It is defogged. You have 2 painterly styles of mapped – the fogged style, and for the EotN it’s just white for the mountains, and the zoomed out defogged style, which that is (and there is no non-painterly style unless you’re in the Eye of the North for that one place).
