100+ chests opened, no fossil
I’m taking a break from the bug-hunt.
I REALLY want the bug-longbow, but after opening 24 chests and no insect I’m already “bugged”.
Now, when I was in the game-programming business, we built our random-content generator to progressively increase the odds of getting a rare desired object for those who hadn’t gotten it. Worked pretty well; bad luck lead to better luck. Made players happy.
Did the players know about the increasing odds? … or did you let them feel like they finally hit the jackpot?
hi..
can’t say that I’ve opened 100 chests.. but dang near close. I’ve gotten three goggles and would gladly exchange them for one fossil. Spent most of yesterday, running events, helping folks with chest locations ect. had fun early on, but by the end was just frustrated..
maybe add a small chance in some of the champ chests? or how about a chance for a fossil in the sand giant chests.. as not to many people find the sand giant worth the time anyway. might spark some interest in actually wanting to fight that pain. I would offer skritt queen reward.. but that requires t4.
it was mentioned up top.. sooner or later this content will become “old”, and the people needed to reach t4 will become extremely difficult. Terrible design. Pretty soon there will be people complaining about having fossils and no way to purchase the recipe, due to not being able to reach t4. (and rightly so) I am grinding the heck out of it now.. for fear that the eventual “ghost town” will hit.
wish the folks that put these areas and rewards together.. put a bit more thought into the long term. acquisition of items/recipes that are only accessible, by having gobs of people running timed events, to push the tiers up.. lol.. sooner or later the gobs move on.
ah well.. all the best.

Can’t the recipes be purchased at tier 2?
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Dusk_
Wiki says they are the same price at all tiers, 2 and above.

Surely a couple of people can at least reach tier 2.

The recipes for the bug skin weapons are tier 4.. you can check yourself.. go to a vendor. and cycle each of the tabs to tier 4. after all .. that is what this topic is about. Bug skin fossils and drop rates.
all the best
ps.. the wiki shows that as well.

Oh, you have to have a recipe for the bug skin also? Didn’t know that. Haven’t gotten that far and I thought you just turned in a fossil for a specific bug needed and then was able to craft it. My bad.

I really hate all this RNG non-sense Anet is letting slip into their game.
Before the game was released Anet was bragging that they’d done away with RNG and allowed their high-end dungeon rewards to be bought with tokens. Now all the best rewards are account-bound and RNG. It’s a dumb way to make items rarer.
I’d appreciate these fossil being sellable, then my friend with 3 of these fossils can give one to me.
Yeah Astral basically you need 50 geodes for the inscription recipe, 350-400 geodes (t4-5) for the weapon recipe, and the x amount of geodes to get a fossil. And since that x for me was getting to be over 1000 geodes spent with no fossil, I gave up.
I’m begging the devs to bring back SAB so I can work for COOL skins that require skill and effort and fun instead of boredom and luck.

I’m already working on a full set of ascended weapons for 8 chars. I hasn’t realized this needed the geodes for a weapon inscription in addition to the Nomad inscription. That…..is more than time, effort and RNG than I want to dedicate to this weapon skin.
Oh well, at least I found out at the start.

It was not documented, but players figured it out. The end result was few complaints about RNG. Happier players == paying players.
I think you should be able to complete zone specific tasks in order to get the fossil, not this RNG crap.
I am at 131 keys and nothing still.
Guys, to be honest, I prefer that we need to earn them this way.
I got my fossil and crafted my GS toady. If the large amount of work to get the fossil and geodes wasn’t a prerequisite to the weapon, I wouldn’t even want it. The fact that I had to work for it, and that anyone else I see carrying it did the same is the only reason I wanted it in the first place.
People moan about the fact that legendary weapons are too easy to get as they can just be bought and don’t need to be earned. Most people don’t really consider them very legendary at all anymore. When I see someone walking around with a Teq weapon, i go “That’s awesome”. When I see someone walking around with Twilight i go “Meh”.
I love the fact that everyone that has crafted one of these weapons has worked for it. (Minus perhaps the lucky few that got a fossil very quickly).
Possibly the worst chronotank EU.
Same for me, around 60 chests opened an not a single bug.
The problem is that i’m not only unlucky on that particular thing : i’m constantly unlucky in this game. There IS a RNG problem and lucky / unlucky accounts (even if everyone else is saying that no, there is no such thing as “unlucky account” and that is is an “urban legend” – obviously, it’s not).
I love the fact that everyone that has crafted one of these weapons has worked for it. (Minus perhaps the lucky few that got a fossil very quickly).
I didn’t work for jack, got it in the first 3-4 I opened. RNG =/= “work” it equals luck. Wish people would get out of that mindset.

My point is simply that its nice to have some stuff that is not readily available to everyone, all the time.
You will also notice that I did say “Minus the lucky few that got a fossil very quickly”. That’d be you.

While I don’t disagree, I’d prefer it required something actually difficult (with seasonal a second choice) than RNG.
Mad King’s Clocktower is still one of the hardest things I’ve done in any game, for someone like me who’s not an awesome platformer. That’s something you can’t outgear, can’t be carried through, you have to just plain get better. THAT’S the kind of gating mechanism I’d like to see for special items. THAT’S worthy of bragging rights. As it is these skins mean nothing because of the luck factor.
I honestly don’t care whether something is rare or common if I like it, but I know I’m in the minority.
trixnotes tumblr: quick hits of lore | personal tumblr (some other GW2 stuff)
Yeah, I do agree with you.
Gating rewards behind difficulty would be better. Im just glad to see something gated to be honest. The percentage of ‘reward’ type content that is actually gated (largely due to TP and gem to gold trade) is tiny.
Im not saying this is ideal. But its a hell of a lot better than some new player on level 7 buying gems and running around with something I worked for.
*no offense to new players with shiny stuff.
Possibly the worst chronotank EU.
True, I would like to see fewer buyable rewards. I’d like to see more equivalent of the star for map completion — nifty symbols beside your name for different accomplishments.

The only grind in this game is the one you force on yourselves. I can easily make 100+ gold a month simply by playing and cleaning out my bank of all the stuff I’ve collected just by running around. This content is permanent. I.E. it’s not going anywhere. So 5 years down the line, you can keep coming back to it. Burning yourself out by only doing these events over and over again is your own problem. The amber weapons have been out for three days. Three. However, I’ll actually agree with you on one point – I’d prefer they weren’t account bound.
RNG has been in every MMO since the dawn of time. I killed Onyxia in WoW 50+ times and never once saw my Warlock T2 helmet. In a game that does not have a monthly subscription, RNG is a necessary evil – unfortunately it’s how it keeps the gem store going and the game funded for more releases.
Shelve this game all you want, the grass isn’t greener on the other side.
Except this has nothing to do with gems or gold, since this skin is 100% locked behind a RNG and bound to your account. This on top of the additional costs of a unique recipe and material and then the standard cost of an exotic weapon.
There is no entitlement here. There is a legitimate complaint of a really, really annoying mechanism that actually is unnecessary.
PS – typing this as I look for an upgraded instance so I can actually acquire the recipe I need to craft my bow, something that requires not RNG, but an entire map of people working together to achieve (and in case you haven’t looked, T4-5 is rare). There’s no way to tell if they will even exist in 6 months.
I had my fossil in the 4th chest, while i only opened chests on my way and not farming anything.
To bad i didnt wanted this ugly waeponticket and cant sell it or give it to friends who’d like to get one.
A “gift option” would be a really nice feature for account bound items though.
A “gift option” would be a really nice feature for account bound items though.
While I’d like that, unfortunately it would lead to a rise in “grey market trading” where players would spam “WTS <account bound item> 5g” in town. I’ve had my fill of trade spam back in GW1. >.<
I’ve gotten 2/50 chests thus far. I have neither any interest in the weapons nor any of the recipes thus far (partly also due to the rumors of the grind some of the items have) — I mainly just open boxes after getting a bunch of geodes from the events.
If i could, I’d sell the fossils I’ve found and any I got in the future. I really don’t see the issue in having the fossil sellable, considering you still have to buy the recipe for the weapon and nomad insignia as I understand? Then you have to craft the weapon with whatever mats it needs. Afterall, the only item I truly covet — the adventurer’s items, is buyable off TP.

It’s funny how you try to blame the player, instead of the actual game design and thought process that was put into it. RNG isn’t a necessary evil. It’s just “evil”. It’s terrible game design, without a better algorithmic process.
As one poster above mentioned, it could be programmed to increase the chances of obtaining an item, by caculating the amount of tries that the chests were open. It actually gives the players more control of their time. If someone wants to spend more time to get something faster, then he could have that choice, and if the casual player wanted to obtain that item, over a year’s time, then they would have that choice too.
Speaking of WoW, i thought people like you didn’t want GW2 to become WoW. So now, since Anet does it, the RNG is a “necessary evil”. Fanboys sure are funny.
Ah, the fanboys argument. How cute. Are you really comparing WoW’s RNG with GW2’s RNG? Okay, sit there a moment while I explain the difference. I’ll use pictures and small words.
I had to raid Onyxia. If I didn’t have the proper gear for the next level, I was a liability to my team. WoW was on a monthly subscription. If they didn’t put armor and weapons on RNG, you could get them very easily. When you have everything, suddenly you have nothing to play for, don’t want to play anymore and may just cancel your subscription, losing WoW money.
I don’t have to have the skin. It does nothing for me. That’s why I love this game. Sure, it’s a pretty skin. I don’t need it. But I might want it. So the inability to control your own wants over your own needs is the PLAYERS own problem, not Anet’s. And as I said before, I think it should be account bound. I was lucky enough to receive a bug. I would love to give it to a fellow guildmate. Anet’s RNG is locked behind the gem store, because that is how they fund their game. Unfortunately they know how people can’t control their wants over their needs, so they put stuff behind RNG so they can make money. Without that, the updates no longer come. But hey, congrats – nothing on the gem store is NEEDED either. It’s just WANTED.
See the difference now, tiger? “Fanboy”? Please. Learn to read logic.
Got a fossil in fewer than 20 chests…. don’t even want any of the weapons. Might just delete it just so Anet can see it in their precious metrics.
I agree with the OP, and I have one of the fossils. I don’t like it for the exact reasons stated. I think the current system alienates players and makes them angry. Why should a game make you angry? It’s bad for those that may never see a fossil. It’s also bad for some that get one or more but have no interest in them. It’s also bad for people like me, who will never use just one weapon of a set (yes, I have some weird thing about matching). OK, so I have one skin. But I need 3 more to make a set of weapons. What if I never see any more?
I really dislike the way this game determines how you get stuff. I am like the OP in that I don’t mind working for something. Heck, I’d even find it less stressful to master some part of the game that I hate. But to put countless hours in and get nothing is just disheartening.
I mean, what’s with these idiotic sandpiles too? Using up hundreds and getting a few geodes is ridiculous. So… loot that is actually not loot. No, this is just bad design.
I really like a token system, like dungeons. What’s wrong with getting tokens for all the drytop events (much like the geodes and sandpiles), being able to save them up and trade them in???

Thanks for your support in my endless QQ crusade.
I’m literally just going to wait for the devs to put SAB back in the game so I can earn trib mode skins through skill and perseverance, and so my infinite continue coin stops gathering dust!

At the least, buy the recipes now. Once you have em, you have em. Then it’s only a matter of chest farming at your convenience, regardless of tier. You can run for chests at tier 1 and still have the same chance at getting a fossil. It sucks, I hate RNG dependent drops, especially when they’re so rare. But it’s at least possible to eventually get them, regardless of Dry Top’s popularity in the future.

Welcome to RNG Wars 2.
So that this opinion doesn’t get buried under RNG hate (and I have no love for RNG either), I want to express my support for rewards that are obtained through play, not through purchase. There are many, many things in game that can simply be bought, so it’s nice to see some additions to those that must be earned by participating in content. Now, the method by which play awards these things is a matter of debate, but personally it’s nice to see it happening in any form.
So, in sum:
Rewards from play, not purchase = good.
RNG as reward method = less good.
Exactly Vincent! Players want to play the game! We want to be rewarded for playing! We want cool skins that come from playing!!!! But RNG is maybe not the best way as a vehicle to get said rewards, within that framework.
Personally, I would not want anything just handed to me. Some of my favorite skins are the ones I look at and remember the times I played to earn them (i.e. spinal blades, wings of the sunless). I enjoyed that time. I enjoyed feeling rewarded for that time. I feel awful for those people that kill Teq 1000 times and still have nothing “cool” to show for it. All they have is bad feelings now. Same will happen for people trying to get these amberite skins. Some will get 10 and some will get none, for same level of play. This is highly unfair!!!

Yes RNG is a tool to artificially add to the lifespan of certain content. But, I don’t think GW2 needs it, more over, I think they’ve done fine without it.
What was the RNG content sucker before this last week? t6 mats to make legendaries or get gold? I mean there is a very small list of things you need good luck with the RNG to get. Teq Hoard, Fractal skins, Jungle Wurm armor?, and now these weapons. That’s about it.
I really don’t think the GW2 devs are concerned with the normal reasons RNG is the defining factor. I’d put my money on it being to satiate the desires of those who want “in game rewards”. There has been a bunch of complaints about it, and they gave it to us. Their goal is to have players happy and having fun, not to play off their addiction like WOW/EQ type subscription games. Subscription games need to keep you wanting to play through times between new content, and thus the gear treadmill & RNG. A game like GW2 doesn’t do that, it’s based purely on the enjoyment factor. Stop having fun, stop playing, stop paying. WHere sub games with their gear treadmill keeps you playing through needing to keep yourself current for any new content to come out.
I’m not really for or against it here though, it’s so sparsely used in GW2 that I’m ok with it. But I very much would rather it be tradeable considering I got 3 bugs in my first ~15 chests and I don’t like any of the skins enough to use. So I’d have been happier had I been able to make a profit off them, just like my Teq Hoard that i’m not using.
Chest number 13… got one….
Now, I am looking harder for chests.
It’s all luck man. I did my first sandstorm in the new area and got two fossils from the chests back to back.
Got mine in the 2nd chest I opened since the update, thought it was common thing. But dang 100+ chests? Good thing I kept my amber

This content is permanent. I.E. it’s not going anywhere. So 5 years down the line, you can keep coming back to it. Burning yourself out by only doing these events over and over again is your own problem.
I only see one problem: the T4 requirement before you can get the skins. It’s already a rare occurrence now, during my play times to see that happening. So how often will it happen in 5 years?
Mega servers mean maps will always be as full as possible. Dry Top is on an hourly schedule so everyone knows what to do when. It’s definitely conceivable that t4 happens occasionally a year or two from now. Plus, it’s a fully automated event/champ train on a level 80 map. Even if you don’t need a skin, it’s very farm able.
I hope they open up Fossils for TP trading. I have one that I don’t even want.
I have two now that I’d like to sell. I will no doubt get more too. That’s the way RNG seems to work for me. If I want something, I will farm it for weeks and not get it. The moment I get one, or stop bothering, it will drop like rain.
id say i got 2 from 3 chests. thought it’s high rate.
I received 2 of the fossils from the first 20 chests i opened.
Due to not buying the recipe first, i got the wrong bug for one.
No problem i think, Drop rate appears to be high.
Sat down and starting farming Geodes, was lucky enough to get on a Tier 5 map for almost the entire time.
13 hours later, I don’t even want to think about the numbers of geodes I went thru,
I finally got another to drop. That’s it for me.
id say i got 2 from 3 chests. thought it’s high rate.
Reactions like these make me sad. It’s like those people that get a precursor on the first forge, go on the forum and say “so what’s all the fuss look at me, look, I got on the first try”.
I had a similar experience as the OP. About 150 chests, and 1 fossil to show for it.
RnG in this game makes me always lulz.
Took me over 1800 hours to find a precursor.
Took me over one bazillion frac runs to realize it’s no use to grind anymore.
Took me a single second to realize i have no patience for the new headpieces from LS2 beginning.
The span it took me to give up on grinding for the new weapon mats is not even measurable.
I finally learned.
Honestly, the only thing i love about the chests is how much dragonite they spit out. Just great! Thx Anet

Now, when I was in the game-programming business, we built our random-content generator to progressively increase the odds of getting a rare desired object for those who hadn’t gotten it. Worked pretty well; bad luck lead to better luck. Made players happy.
Thanks for the tip! I will remember this after I graduate… if I take my programming skills in that direction.
I’m usually not very lucky RNG-wise, but I got one too from less than 20 chests if i remember correctly…. and same problem here, i don’t really want it, hell i don’t even craft, so i could support these fossils not being account bound…
Does anyone know if devs are going to do something about it or wrote to them about these crappy system (I mean from people here, I’m sure many people did that). I think I opened at least 40 chests now, best thing I got are these googles.
welp..
well over 150 chests now.. not one fossil to be found. the frustration is second only to the anger. it takes a great deal of “farming” from the events to collect that many geodes for keys, not to mention the two recipes I have to go along with it (800 geodes) and then the 50 geodes for the inscription. Now to be fair, I got some of those keys from dust piles, drops ect. but even at 1/2 (which it isn’t) coming from that alone.. I spent close to 3200 geodes.
if you (Anet) were trying to get me NOT to play your content again, your doing a mighty fine job of it.
I get the whole RNG concept of keeping folks engaged to the area for shinys. but do your devs know the concept of frustrating the players enough to not want to play your game?
open up the drop rate, make the drops possible from champ or sand giant. or make them tradable please. something.
I’ve opened 30 and got one… I wasn’t really looking to get one either. I usually have crap for luck in this game.
