“Ingrid living” or Valcorie. This was the name of man, a dad who died recently of cancer and his son talked about it on reddit since he was a hyge fun of the game . There was alot of devs there to give him their condolences.

Idk i wanted to suggest this, to the team in lw for ep 6 or se 4. Would it be dissrespectful or rather hard to put his character in game somewhere? As an npc or a normal npc named after his character. As means of respect i suppose. Idk i have seen this happen alot with various ppl in other mmos, mostly in wow. I always thought it was something really ncie to do and respectable. So i thought id suggest it as an easter egg or as 1 of the meta achievements of the map.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/6j2lz5/im_sorry_to_say_that_youve_lost_a_player/ here is the reddit post his son made if you wnt to give your condolences.

My condolences to his family, i hope the game gave him plenty of good memories.

It’s a nice idea, having memorials. His guild can make one and put it in their guild hall. That would be a lot more personal than one in game.

As you might know, the NA world, The Sanctum of Rall, was named after a long-time GW1 player who died before the game was released. However, generally speaking, guilds can place Monuments in memory of longtime friends, co-players, companions.

Notably, devs used to name things left & right for GW1 fans. For GW2, ANet changed the policy and has only done it in some very compelling cases (although they do name quite a lot of stuff after GW2 employees).

In a game with millions of accounts and millions of long-term players, it’s inevitable that some players will die, some tragically. It’s noble to want to honor them all. As a practical matter, it’s not possible to do so.

I’m not against honoring Valcorie. I am against putting ANet in the position of feeling that they need to do so or refrain from offering condolences when people mention the passing of a loved one.

There’s a Dev post (from Gaile, I think) about this issue (honoring deceased players) and why it’s not a common practice. You could use Google to find it, if interested.

Good luck.

These sort of threads pop up now and again with a request to have some sort of ingame memorial to someone who has died.

It’s simply not practical. With millions of accounts that means thousands of account holders die each year. While most were probably not dedicated players, even memorials to only 2 or 3 or so dedicated players each year would add up.

And how would the game determine who deserves an ingame memorial? How could the game even prove that these people actually are dead (as an example where it could be abused or trolled, someone could want an ingame memorial to themself and pretend to be a grieving family member or friend and report themself as dead in order to get their name permanently in the game).

[Math: if we assume the game has 3,000,000 unique account holders and assume a death rate of 3/1000 (Which is very low. The US average is 8.3/1000) that means 9,000 account holders die each year.]

Bethesda did something similar with an NPC in Fallout 4 and it was pretty well received (by the people who found out about it)(https://www.pcgamesn.com/fallout-4/fallout-4-nuka-world-dlc-tribute-evan) But it’s really not a common thing for game companies to do. I guess it’s just not reasonable to throw up a monument to every person who plays a game and passes away, and as terrible as it is, there are probably people out there who think “THAT guy got a memorial, but my friend/family member/very talented video game playing pet doesn’t?” So game companies probably like to avoid that messy (rather selfish) situation.

It’s good that the devs gave what condolences they could on reddit though. I hope the family gets the support they need to pull through the tough times they’re surely having dealing with their loss. And who knows, maybe you can organize a little player run in game event for the player. The community in GW2 has somewhat of a reputation for being very kind and supportive for an MMO community, so it may be something to consider.

I do agree asking for someone to get a memorial isnt good for a game. But i do think once or twice if the devs take incentive to do it for special cases nobody will have a problem with it. Im not saying this case should be one of these “special” cases. Im being more general.

What might be better is a memorial to all players who are no longer among us. It could be an instance or a quiet spot on a map and it could have a monument with an inscription and a living flame, but no names as it will be for all, not just the few.
