AFK in Silverwastes
The whole map’s mechanics are based on large zergs. If you look at all the other maps in Gw2, the future of the Silverwastes is a very bleak one.
Good luck to future players who come in and want to start doing Silverwastes content in the future.

Define large zerg. All of the bosses can be killed with a single party so that’s around 20 players. The same number and hold and defend the bases.
20 per boss is not a zerg? That requires 80 for 4 camps, or 60 for 3 champions. Can you count those numbers in any of the other maps around the world? When the living story moves on, do you think you can muster those numbers in the Silverwastes?

The problem is logging in and finding a map with 20 active players in it without having to stand around or go AFK for half an hour.
I concur with Florence that the future of SW is a bleak one if no new content is added.
Currently SW is active with players aiming for Breach and subsequent Vinewrath Chest for the Carapace Coat Box. While it lasts, there is activity on the map. However, insane amounts of shovels and crests are given to players. And when finally the craze of Vinewrath Chest is over, the chest farmers will take over the map. This will upscale the mobs as they pass by the forts and small party groups will be unable to defend.
Should ANet try to “minimize” this occurance by having the Carapace Chest Box sold by vendor with crests, this will only serve to shorten the amount of time chest farmers are around and ultimately, still leave SW as its name implies after the plunder… Silver Wastes.
Things do look bleak indeed for SW unless more content in put in.
Surprised that there isn’t more feedback about this issue.
The amount of AFKs are becoming increasingly worse. Could we at least lower the AFK kick timer on this zone?
Silverwastes is a better farm than Orr, even not taking into account the carapace armour boxes. In fact once the need to do Vinewrath stops becoming the main driving force I expect to see map populations even out, so I am pretty upbeat about the map’s future.
As for afk’s, yes I agree. AFK farmers are a blight on the game.
I agree. In chat you see players saying the map is capped but each fort is asking for more to assist. You wp to the main fort and everyone is there waiting. I was at the Vinewrath later and noticed several on rocks waiting for our lane to get in. Not fighting, just standing and watching. Quite frustrating. If they would help, getting to the breach and Vinewrath would go much faster and smoother.

What I don’t understand is why the megaserver system keeps putting people into instances with very few people and 0% progress instead of the dozen almost full instances with 20-50% progress.
In this zone the more the merrier, so the megaserver system should always try to cram people into the almost full instances and once they’re full, start filling up the next instance, instead of throwing people into multiple almost empty instances with 0% progress.

Lol, he meant 5 players per boss not 20 per boss.

I suspect that the megaserver algorithms simply have not been programmed to take the specifics of zones like Dry Top and the Silverwastes into account. In these zones with map-wide meta-events, the megaserver system should take meta-event progress into account when putting people into instances and when deciding which instances to close. It doesn’t, from what I’ve seen.

Yeah. Because when you think about it, I don’t think anyone would go “Awwww! It’s 90% done and now I don’t get to grind the same events 20 times before the breach!”
Until the SW event system changes so that it’s not a massive waste of time until repeatedly getting screwed by the RNG every breach, this problem is inevitable.
I don’t actually mind the setup of the map, it’s just the horrendous design flaw at the end of each cycle that makes SW intolerable. If it were possible to collect the things you need for the collections methodically, rather than getting kicked in the balls for not using a taxi all the time to beat the RNG, the map would actually be a fun place to play rather than an egregious grind.

I volunteered to move to a new map due to few players, and before the resulting buff expired, I got another notice asking me to move to a new map due to few players.
Something is definitely wrong here.

This map is so lucrative I don’t imagine I will stop playing it any time soon.
You dont have to be one to love one.
I’d probably be a more active player in the ’wastes if I could stay connected long enough to make it worthwhile.
As it is, I just try to taxi/afk myself toward a vinewrath event while the greater part of my attention is outside of the game. I have to start over from scratch every time the dreaded error 7:100:some:more:numbers hits me, which is quite often.
Trying to get back into the instance I disconnected from is usually a pointless enterprise, even if I’m in a party, because slots in good instances are instantly filled due to all the taxiing going on.
So I just stand there on some rock formation, hoping for the best. On a good day, I can do vinewrath.
Edit: And mere minutes after posting the above, I got my error 7:11 while fighting the platinum thrasher, logging back in on a post-vinewrath instance with 7 minutes on the clock until the next foothold event. Back to my perch!

There will still be people, since you can get 50+ champ bags in a ridiculously short time on the map. (Bandit keys + Vinewrath + Nightmare Chest + the champions that spawn after Vinewrath)
I don’t think this map will die any time soon unless it is nerfed to the ground.

I quit how I want
First off, the speculation about Silverwastes eventually dying is correct. I’ve finally got all the organs for the ascended gear last night. The last mini too. Now I have zero desire to ever return to that map even with the nice loot.
That said, I really don’t get the AFKers at all.
I’ll freely admit, when I can, I’ll drag mobs onto those people and then stealth using an ability. Without fail, the AFKers will move or run away. So, obviously, they’re paying attention . . . just not wanting to help.
That I really don’t understand. If you’re there, why can’t you assist in getting the loot or goal you obviously want?
I’ll never understand that.
Agreed that it is getting tiring that pretty much every time I enter Silverwastes, it is in a map that is in the timeout phase – usually with 10 minutes or more left to go until the foothold phase starts. Always getting put into a map like that is getting old. It gets to the point where using the LFG to find a map where you’re not in timeout becomes nearly the way you must play.
Some must fight, so that all may leech.
