Probably a late topic (and I can’t find any mention of it on this forum), but as I was watching the latest lore video from Wooden Potatoes today, he noted this:

  • The flag of the Aetherblades features a clockwork sword, but also a skull on a red field.
  • Mai Trin, the captain of the Aetherblades, is clearly of Canthan heritage.
  • Cantha (in GW1) had a pirate faction known as the Crimson Skull, with a similar flag.
  • Mai Trin mentioned having to answer to someone named Scarlett, which is another shade of red, like crimson.

Time for wild mass guessing!

Could it be that the Aetherblades are actually descendants of the Crimson Skull? Perhaps a “Tyrian branch” of the organization?

What if the Aetherblades are more than just pirates? What if Mai Trin and Scarlett work for the Canthan government, and piracy is just a cover?

What if Mai Trin’s attempt to get into the Lion’s Arch Captain’s Council was an attempt to insert a Canthan agent into a position of power?

Possible although their are already 1 maybe 2 canthans in positions of power in Tyria.

Hao Luen is a captain on the captains council from a noble family in cantha that has had heavy influence on LA since its founding.

Doern Velazquez a preceptor in the Order of Whispers is rumored to be canthan. when asked he states “That information is classified. Maybe we’ll talk more about it one day.”

I’m of the opinion that the Aetherblades come from the same universe as the Steam Mechs. And also gave their technology to the Molton Alliance.

You’re probably right. I’ll also add that I did take notice that the Zephyr ship was designed with Canthan Architecture.

The whole name “Winds of Change” could also imply that the wind is what was needed for the ships to take flight, which could very well have saved the survivors of Cantha when it was flooded.

Cantha may not exist anymore, but some of it’s people are still alive.

Cantha still exists. We just lost contact with it, partially because of a xenophobic government, but mostly because of the rise of Zaithan.
From the Wiki: “The only proof that Cantha still exists are sporadic sailors washing ashore on the Tarnished Coast.”

Of course, ANet might change that whenever they want and decide that they want Cantha gone for good.

I like the theory presented by the OP, but it seems that Scarlet is a sylvari (unless the “mysterious figure” turns out to be someone else). Of course, I am all for Cantha and for Conspiracies, so let me grab my tinfoil hat and see where this is going.

When the Aetherblades were introduced, it was explained that they stole their airships from the Pact and made an alliance with the Inquest for their technology.
