Considering the portion most important pertains to the instance, I’m curious to know why he would give up his prized sword.

Temperance, folks. We don’t know if he succeeds, or that it’s not a vision of the future granted by our exposure to Omadd’s machine.

I should be writing.

I doubt it would affect the entirety of Ascalon. If it worked (big if), it would mean that ghosts would basically vanish from the game, altering dozens of Hearts, events, the Ascalon Catacombs dungeon (which isn’t so bad since it’s effectively an instance frozen in time, like the Personal Story) and essentially mean that new players would miss out on experiencing a large part of Charr “culture”.

My guess is that Rytlock’s attempt to break the curse either fails (“You are not the rightful heir of Ascalon…”), or it only partially succeeds, freeing certain ghosts who are more intelligent and free-willed, but not those who are fiercely stuck in the past (i.e. Adelbern).

Either way, I’m guessing Rytlock does it either to deny Mordremoth an additional source of magic to consume (remember the book in the Ley Line Hub with the theory that ghosts are just magical energy constructs?), or because the Charr desperately need reinforcements to fight back against the Mordrem invasion.

I’m sure there will still be plenty of things to murder.

There’s too much speculation on this. We will have to wait and see. I just don’t see them revamping all of the Ascalonian zones that are cursed though. That would be tremendous work. We’re talking about removing NPC ghosts, and the heart tasks, dynamic events, and stories they are tied to, which would include escort quests, capture & hold events, npc dialogues, etc.

That would be insane to revamp all this: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Ascalon

Cities
Black Citadel

Explorable zones
Plains of Ashford (1–15)
Diessa Plateau (15–25)
Fields of Ruin (30–40)
Blazeridge Steppes (40–50)
Iron Marches (50–60)
Fireheart Rise (60–70)

Dungeons
Ascalonian Catacombs (30, 35)
Citadel of Flame (70, 75)

That seems like it would be a ‘Big Project’… One that would have to be worked on in the background for a while…

On a bit of a more serious note though, changing all of that is kinda what some players were asking for during season 1 (Not specifically this mind you). There were those that were clamoring for the living story to permanently affect the world in major ways and that is exactly what this would do. Also it would be easier to change / alter existing stuff than to create new stuff from scratch.

But in the long run I do agree with the poster I quoted about there being too much speculation. We will all see soon enough.

If the curse is broken, wouldn’t that imply that Ascalon could be rebuilt? Including, for example, new hearts and events and a possible “power” vacuum that the centaurs try to fill by seeking to claim the area for themselves? Basically, the potential for a wholly redesigned zone exists.

Why would the centaurs march ALL the way across the shiverpeaks to try to take Ascalon? Mind you they are completely unsuited for facing Charr tanks and all.
