Bought the game, no living story season2?
You bought the base game.
You got access to the base game.
Living Story is not part of the base game, thus it is not included.

Where is that written? Why is that not mentioned when I buy the game that it’s just a base with missing content?
It is not written anywhere, it is just common sense.
When you buy something, you buy what is in the box so to speak. Not expansions, not DLCs, not special items.
If someone buys GW2 after HoT is released, they will not get HoT for free after all.
Another thing to keep in mind is that you don’t actually have to buy the chapters in order to access the story instances. You can join someone that already have the chapters unlocked and do it that way.

Common sense? In a store I can see what I buy, so atleast on the website it should say when certain content is not included. It’s an MMO of 3-4 years old ? with a price of 40$ and you’re missing quests on a MMO unless you pay more?! Sorry, but i’ve never run into this before on any other.
If a story part is about 15min-1hour content considered a DLC, then that’s horrible. But any other game that had DLC’s, it would atleast show which would be included and which would not be, name and all.

You buy what’s listed on the box. For just about everything, if it’s not listed on the box then it’s not included.
Welcome to GW2, have you visited the gem store lately? LOL
Geez, not another one of THOSE threads…

^This.
Think of it as an optional $15 day-one DLC that culminates in a 2 minute promotional trailer for their expansion. Do you really still want it?

Its starting to get hard giving the benefit of the doubt.
When you buy a car and dont get a garage do you feel cheated just because the exclusion of the garage was never listed in the car specifications?
When you buy a movie ticket do you feel cheated because the ticket didnt come with pop-corn, a drink and free admission to the sequel and none of that was printed on the ticket?
Like its been pointed out before thats not how things work. Products dont tell you what they dont include they tell you what you’re getting for what you’re paying.
And it cant be any other way. Just think about it. If you buy a carton of milk how many things arent included with that carton of milk? should the vendor list them all? This carton of milk doesnt include:
A Glass
A Straw
A Garden
A House
A Car
A bike
A motorcycle
Strawberries
Banana
Sugar
A blender
Ice cream
A bag
A Person to share the milk with
A time machine to fix any spilled milk scenarios
I could go on but you get the idea.

Actually if all you’re interested is the promotional trailer then he can actually get that, just join someone who’s playing the Living story and play with them.
Without the $20 unlock all we will miss is the rewards everything else is there and he can play it for free including the 2 minute promotional trailer / Epilogue that was awesome and quite worthed.

I really didnt. Just went along with it. If I had taken what you said entirely seriously I would have pointed out the other more important aspects you’d have missed such as the story, the character development. The game play (some of those boss fights were fun) not to mention some of the very very few true challenges this game offers through the achievements of those story episode releases.
threatening with a lawyer… how old are you, 16 at best? Oh, I am sure that will be a case everyone will want to sink their teeth in… people today…

So you never bought the “normal” version of any game before?
I am not talking about re-release or GOTY. I am talking about the normal game.
If you did so, then you have a complete game and you can go to the associated store and buy your DLC if you so desire. It is not part of the base game.
Yes, GW2 is now nearly 3 years old. However there is no special edition out there, which provides you with the DLC you desire.
There is some which gives you an extra elite skill, items and skins, but none which includes Season 2… yet.
Season 2 has just finished and there is no bundle for you. Wait like everyone else for a bundled edition.
You are mistaken about what the Living Story is. You only miss the story and the associated rewards, which in this case is: One Backpack (and it`s upgrade)
Everything else you are able to experience.
New Maps? Check
New Skins? Check
New rewards? Check
Though this is certainly a marketing isssue and the PR department should really get on it and show what they are really paying for. S2 in a nutshell is not as big as people like the OP make out to be (in compairson with the rest of the game, i mean).
The thing you need to realize is that GW2’s story content is a limited edition affair, similar to other games with special events. The difference is that the primary content model since release has been a series of special events.
People didn’t like that they couldn’t go back and play these special events, so Anet, based on community feedback, added a convenience purchase for people that missed story events to re-play them for most of their associated rewards.
This was a win/win. Players still got semiregular story updates for free, and on top of that new permanent zones added to the game. Anet got an additional revenue stream.
LS episodes are, in fact, DLC, the difference is that Anet is nice enough to give you the option of acquiring them for free during their release period, unlike every other themepark that has used this model (DCUO, LOTR, etc.)
This is precisely why you don’t pay a subscription fee. Gem store sales replaced it. In order to keep development on more new content rolling, they need to monetize the game beyond its release content.
Just like any other game, if you really enjoy it, you might consider purchasing some DLC. If you’re not that big of a fan, maybe you’ll just play the base game, then go play something else.

Wait, I’m confused…you have to pay for Season 2? This isn’t meant as a complaint, just trying to understand how this works. I’ve been away for a while and was thinking about returning soon because of the expansion…figured I’d check the forums first and saw this post. Could someone please clarify this whole thing for me? Thanks!

Thanks Ayrilana, that’s exactly what I was looking for!
While you are defending with reasonable arguments the season 2 release model, I still think it’s bad marketing. It’s just not very encouraging if you have to pay for it after you bought the actual game.
‘would of been’ —> wrong
Well, it is definitely Anets fault though. Why is there still no bundle with S2 that you can buy? There are only Digital Heroic Edition and Digital Deluxe Edition.
If you dont know about S2 release model prior too buying gw2, I can see why you may be annoyed. S2 isnt mentioned at all at the “buy now” page, so it is natural to assume everything is included (because there isnt a checkmark that says it is or isnt, I would just count it to gw2-game myself)).

We’re defending it is if you look at the other B2P games out there:
Defiance, The Secret world as well as in the future Elder Scrolls online they also release small DLCs and they make everyone pay for that (its the buy to play model after all)
Gw2 made if a bit different, instead of charging everyone like everyone else does they give it away for free to those active players who play their game regularly or at least who log on for a few seconds every 2 weeks. Additionally they also allow you to experience the story if you missed it and dont want to buy it as long as you find someone who’s willing to take you through your story which is likely everyone with a guild.
What they’re doing is generous not greedy. This is essentially the classic is the glass 1/2 empty or 1/2 full
people are feeling cheated because their glass is 1/2 empty not realizing that everyone else’s glass is fully empty and they have reasons to be happy that at least their’s is 1/2 full.
(I included ESO there because although its not B2P yet thy did state their plans are to charge for periodic content once they switch over next month)

Because you can still unlock last part of Season 2? It would make rather little sense to release a bundle while parts are still obtainable for free after all.
The second part makes little sense. If I go to a store and buy a game it usually never tells me that there are expansions or DLCs that I also have to buy in order to get everything.

If you go to a store, there isnt a checklist telling you what is and isnt included either. Swtor and other mmos on the other hand show you exactly what you are and arent buying.
Obviously, there is a greyed out “Season 2 Episodes” missing in the checklist for either Edition, so people will naturally assume it’s part of “Guild Wars 2 – Game”.
I was not aware that you still get the last Episode for free.. the 2 weeks are up.
(edited by GreenAlien.5623)
The last episode is free until Tuesday, I believe. There was some announcement about “until February 24” regarding it.
Also, you should keep in mind that the Living Story content is made for max level players who already know their way around the game.
If you just bought the game – take your time, play through your personal story in the base game first (it IS the basis for the following living story content after all), see if you like the gameplay, which profession you’d like to make your main, etc… and then you can decide if you want to pay for S2. Because you’ll still have that opportunity.
You bought a full game – a game the rest of us was playing for 1-2 years before the living story came around. You simply bought it so late that now you’ll have to pay for the additional content the ‘early adopters’ got for free. Any free, additional content that comes out after you bought the game will be free for you as well, so cheer up!

actually, nowadays, usually in MMOs, buying the game will give you everything but the latest expansion, and sometimes even that.
However, the LS style does fit closer with the DLC method.
I think the biggest problem with the system, is its poorly messaged, and poorly packaged. If they actually had a living story season 2 version of the game, people wouldnt be as surprised to find out some stuff is locked out.
Also they should probably sell a package for season 2.
point is, how you sell, package things actually does effect how the consumer approaches/experiences it. And when you are doing something different than whats normal, its best to give people very clear details on what to expect.
or you get a lot of confused, and sometimes angry consumers.

Hmm no. The list you provided for Swtor shows what features you get in between different payments method you choose. IE if you subscribe, buy stuff to become preferred or go straight out Free to play. Naturally this doesnt apply to Gw2 as you there is only one payment method (buy the game) and that gives you everything the base game has to offer.
Likewise the feature list you provided for swtor covers the base game as well. That list for example doesnt tell you that it doesnt include the rise of the hutt cartel expansion which you need to buy separately just like Gw2 doesnt tell you it doesnt include season 2 which you need to buy separately.
It’s free if you are there when it is released. If not then you have to pay 200 gems.
You snooze you lose.

It can be confusing since not everyone will automatically realize that the LS Season 2 is not regular gameplay content since not everyone was here when the game launched and therefore knows what is and is not base content. Plus, there’s LS Season 1 that a lot of people missed and may never again be available, which is a huge chunk of the GW2 story.
And coming to the game in 2015 instead of 2012 isn’t something that should be “punished” by missing out on story content, but as stated before, Anet chose to have content that was totally temporary, which was not the greatest idea overall, anyway.
I didnt get the Dragon P1 sotry for free. Guess what I did? I. BOUGHT. IT.
If this bothers you and you want to make the best out of it: Play gw2 normal, don’t pay $ for the S2 chapters. Then when you hit lvl 80, get all your necessary gear, and farm dungeons daily (Cof p1+2 and TA up/fw are easy ones to me, AC is also relative easy). Do that for few weeks. Depending on your luck, effort, you will get 150g quickly, wich should be enough to buy gems, to buy the chapters.
No excuse anymore for not giving ‘hide mounts’-option
No thanks to unidentified weapons.
I find it kind of funny how people are complaining about having to buy season 2 yet very little if any complaints about season 1 being completely unavailable at least season 2 is/was not temp content but a permanent addition to the game that could be unlocked in game or purchased if you missed.
I do agree that season 2 should have a method to be unlocked for free, as it does continue the main story line maybe getting a pass to continue the story after you beat your personal story, but at least you have the chance to take the fight unlike never knowing why we’re talking about scarlet or the ruins of a building in kessex hills and well alot.
you paid less money for more game than those of us who did at launch… what’s the problem?
I do agree that season 2 should have a method to be unlocked for free, as it does continue the main story line
it already does, you log in when it is released and you get it for free… not enough? well, you can play the game, earn the ingame currency and unlock the story with it, seems completely ok to me…
Living story is not an expansion nor content upgrade. It is a story of the world as it goes on and towards the future. Thus you can access only the story as it is now.
If you want to be able to play all the content, you must be playing when the events are happening.
The Anet has made it so that players can, if they want to, go back and play these episodes again or even get them if they were not online when these happened. This is a mistake in my opinion. All the things that have happened, have happened.
Why can we jump back in time to these specific instances, but not to other times? It would make little more sense if they made it to be a dream or something similar or even fractal pieces (for solo/duo fractal play).
…
did someone told you that not everything in the game is lore based? this is good example of pure gameplay reason… it’s not a time travel, it’s just a replayability of content… it doesn’t have anything to do with fractals or anything like that…
I understand the points of both sides.
On one hand, as a new player myself, I blame myself for not doing enough research before getting the game. I just saw living story, and thought man that is cool! buys Oh I got to pay to catch up? well..silly me.
On the other hand, I understand that a game needs to make money to keep pumping out content. This is a good way to do that.
HOWEVER. I would have liked to know what I missed from season 1, and maybe, a season 2 bundle that is a tad kitteneaper? 10 dollars feels about right.
Is that bad for me to feel like that?
I never found this to be an issue when I bought the game and missed out on some episodes. I believe most (if not all) of the “Omg episodes not included” or “Omg the NPE” complaints come from long time players that pretend to be new.
The only thing I find sad is that I missed out on LS1, but that’s my own fault and I understand why they created it the way they did and why it’s not replayable. kitten happens you know.
You bought the base game.

Wrong. It essentially is part of the base game as there are no specific lines saying it’s not. Also, for most of us, living world was happening the same time the “base game” was and to us, is no different from one another. Also, the “base game” is impacted by the living world- now new players get to see a ruined Lion’s Arch despite having no involvement in the events of the destruction (Season 1) while everyone else did- for free.

That’s not an argument. That’s like me saying that we should be able to fight as Quaggans because they specifically haven’t said that we couldn’t. Or a child going to see a movie but themselves and saying they could because their parents didn’t specifically say that they couldn’t.
