Hi, I haven’t played in a while. I don’t fully understand this new journal unlock system thing. Today I logged in and it said Gates of Maguuma was unlocked in my story journal. I understand that by doing this I have “permanently” unlocked this content, but what exactly does that mean?

Does it mean that months later I can pick this up and obtain achievements and meta rewards from this Gates of Maguuma thing even after it is gone? Or does it just mean I can experience playthroughs months later but miss the rewards because I didn’t participate in the two weeks it was available or whatever? Very confused.

Everything story-related is permanent, so it won’t be ‘gone’. You can run through the story instances at any time, and obtain the rewards. Once you have completed Episode One’s story, you can then complete the Achievements associated with it. This is available for all your Level 80 characters, and characters that later reach Level 80. The Map Achievements are permanent, as well, so you can do those at any time…now or in the future. Tuesday, Episode Two will be released, and as long as you log-in during the release window (likely two weeks – could be longer), you will unlock that story and associated Achievements/Rewards to complete at your leisure.

How exactly is the Living Story going to play out in game terms going forward?

My 30th characters were able enter the Tower of Nightmares, and fight in the surrounding landscape. Out in the world I was able to respond to Scarlet Invasions. I was able to take part in Lions Arch siege events and the downfall of Scarlet.

With this new journal will there still be new content things to do for my < 80th level characters? I enjoyed doing all of the things that I listed above. If the future content that is similar to the above is restricted to 80th level then I will be very disappointed.

Yes, you can still unlock the content for your account even if you’re not level 80 yet.

LS2 is all designed for level 80’s, as canonically it’s supposed to take place after the PC has completed their Personal Story and LS1. Being permanent though, there’s no need to rush. It will all be waiting for you once you hit level 80.
