Can we please kill Phlunt?
Bandits lit an orphanage on fire. Inquest abduct and experiment on live creatures. Bandits sell fellow humans to centaurs.
I’m not having a dialogue with arsonists. I have no pity for torturers. I’ll not weep for slavers.Phlunt took candy from a baby. A dangerous piece of candy. By law.
Phlunt has everything you need, you have nothing he wants.
Note that you didn’t say, “All bandits lit an orphanage on fire. All inquest abduct and experiment on live creatures. All bandits sell fellow humans to centaurs.”
The argument holds no water, sorry. If we’re going to be concerned about being super moral, then our characters should not be killing first and asking questions later, and apparently feeling no guilt or trauma from all the murder that they do.
That’s how the villains are cast in like every other entertainment medium ever.
Can we at least agree that we’re bullkittening ourselves when we think that we’re ever a shining beacon of morality in an MMO?

There are only so many orphanages.

If I call you Ghandi, will that make you happy?

I can’t speak for you, but with rare exception, I wait to be attacked before fighting back. Or the plot forces me to kill them. But mostly, it’s just the guys in red (who are noted to be hostile) that I try to kill, and will otherwise let them live.
what about his bodyguards? would you also kill a number of innocent asura so they won’t tell anyone you killed their employee because he was somewhat of a jerk?
you sure that trip in omadd’s machine didn’t have any unintended effects?
I think it’s funny how we have achievements for killing thousands of sentient beings (bandits, inquest, centaurs, etc.) yet we bring a “story” character into the equation and suddenly it’s, “Moral quandary of the century!”
“Oh, but Labjax, those are bad guys.” How do you know? Did you go try to make peace with them? Did you ask all the peons if they’re a fan of the constant fighting and death?
That’s what I thought. Now let me punt Phlunt off a cliff like a football. :P

We know they’re bad because they try to kill us on sight first.
That being said, we did have something Phlunt wanted: the device. Which of course, is why he pulled that set of stipulations out of his bunghole. No confirming with Zojja or Vorpp if they couldn’t take the device instead for Taimi, (as they’re allegedly her guardians) or if she legally had to give it up (along with anything else she makes).
Still can’t believe Zojja directed her to Phlunt of all people. Could’ve gone with Ludo or Zudo instead, since those are the only ones left that don’t seem to be in league with the Inquest or otherwise malevolent/corrupt.

Well there IS an official Inquest Representative at the Arcane Council, and even their High Councillor seems to be somewhat aligned with them. So I wouldn’t trust Phlunt with this particular device knowing he is surrounded by them (might even be one of them).
They don’t have immediate threats to their race unlike Humans (Centaurs), Sylvari (Nightmare Court), Charr (Branded and Ghosts), Norn (Icebrood and Sons of Svanir) so I don’t mind if Mordremoth gives them something to worry about for a change. >:-(

There’s a section of Hoelbrak where Sons of Svanir stay, something to do with respecting their life choice, don’t remember. Out on the field, they’re fair game (literally).
I hear Phlunt was recommended by Zojja, he must have some merit.
It would be bad if Phlunt WAS the best of a bad lot. >.>
Yahk is obviously out due to his Inquest associations.
Ludo and Zudo might not take their duties seriously at all and basically just sleep/doodle during Council sessions.
High Councilor Flax appears to be flatly disinterested in anything that isn’t strictly Asura-related or about inventions.
So maybe, as much of an kitten as he is, Phlunt might be the only Councilor who’s actually invested enough in his role to take it seriously.

I mean bandits are more akin to Inquests and Sons of Svanir that aren’t all inherently evil . They aren’t like the separatists that are beyond negotiation.
Bandits are outlaws mainly active in Kryta. Most bandits do not appear to fight for any particular cause or political ideal, but rather are just thieves and kidnappers only in it for the money. Many bandits are former farmers, displaced from their lands by centaur raids. They feel betrayed by their government and the queen’s inability to protect them and feeling they have no alternatives, they turn to a life of crime.
I’m not sure if Zojja recommended Phlunt exactly though. For all we know, he might’ve volunteered for unknown personal motives.
So, Braham told me about the summit you’re planning, and I talked to Zojja. She talked to the Arcane Council, and one thing led to the other, and now Councillor Phlunt is here in Scarlet’s ley line lab with me, breathing down my neck while I try to finish my device!
While I do doubt that Phlunt is actually evil himself, I don’t want him to have the machine when he is in the company of potential villains while he can’t even defend himself. Plus he’s just so annoying I wanna kick him in the face. Anyway, I dislike Asura in general, I would’ve liked to see them deal with a couple of mordrem attacks on Rata Sum by themselves so they would be forced to cooperate with us on their own accord. :X
And when they finally decide to attend the summit, I would have the liberty to rub it in their faces and say “I told you so!”. I’m more petty than Taimi :X

We already got him to attend the summit. Who’s to say he hadn’t ran to some more mordrem on his way back to Rata Sum? Certainly not me… teehee let me escort you on your way back councillor
Yeah, that’d work brilliantly.
“Let me escort you on your way back. STAB.”
Entire crowd around the commons area of the grove.
“Why the hell did the command just murder Phlunt?”
You see, your plan would POSSIBLY escape, if he wasn’t going to be going through that shiny asura gate.
If I kill Phlunt, you can’t just pin it on Queen Jennah/The Crown or Trahearne/The Pact simply because I was associated/employed by them or member of their organization. You would need to prove that I was ordered by them (or that they were part of the conspiracy) or that they should’ve forseen it and did nothing to prevent it.
Yeah, but it still rings back badly to the Pact.
“Did you hear, the second in command, murdered a member of the Arcane council!”
Yeah, they’d kick the commander out/disown the event. But it still would be there. And it’s just the response doubters need.
“The commander of the Pact, the man organizing this, murdered the Asura leader who agreed to come. Who says he isn’t behind the Mordrem attack? The Krytan ministry demands Jennah stay in Divinity’s Reach, because who knows what will become of any future meetings.”
“That man was personally trusted by Trahearne… who says he isn’t involved?” or “I doubt in his ability to pick good officers, since he handpicked that man.”
Yeah, they might not go after the Pact with torches and pitchforks, but it will stain the rep, and will strain relationships. Doubters will have more power to sway undecided elements.
In game this translates into the political inquiry as to why the Commander of the Pact murdered an Asuran dignitary.
Why is everyone assuming that it would be public knowledge? All you have to do is say that Mordy’s forces attacked in a big way and it was all you could do to get out alive, much less save the council member with no combat skills. Thereby explaining away his death and giving further reason for the forces to join together – a council member killed by Mordremoth’s forces!
“Hey, we brought his corpse to his bodyguards… he was killed by an arrow to the neck/stab wound by a blade/fireball.”
“No Mordrem attack like that.”
Congrats, now you’ve started a mystery that could shatter the alliance.

Fine. Turn back on the mini waypoint thingamajig and then walk out of the room. Problem solved.
And you’re assuming that the bodyguards live or that his body gets discovered intact.
Anyway, you guys are so overthinking this. It’s just a stupid storyline in a video game, holy crap.
To play Devil’s Advocate:
You have to find the body to prove the someone has committed the crime.
If he’s merely “MIA” Then until he’s located there’s no proof he was offed.
In no way does the PC need to commit the crime his/her-self.
For no reason does this need to occur between the time he leaves the Omphalos Chamber and him reaching his home/office. There are plenty of other opportunities to have access, later.
A simple (non-Asuran) mishap w a device in his lab would fix this issue and leave no reason to have to dump him in the Matrix Cube Pit w the Steam Minotaur (or other extra-dimensional-area that could be found in the TNR or any other creative method.)
A simple (Asuran) mishap would definitely fix this issue as well.
On the other Devil’s Side:
I’d rather see how the story plays out. If he’s on the “side of the Angels”, then he may go.
If he’s as bad as he’s got potential to be, then Karma is Queen. I’m sure he’ll get his in the end. And not from us.
At least, unless he’s a scripted (mini-*)Boss Fight, in which case he’ll get lots of ends. Gleefully by the sound of it!
*well, not mini- to another Asura…
Stuff! Stuffy stuff stuff stuff!!
It’d be kinda funny if it turns out Phlunt actually does have the best of intentions, he’s just nor very good at getting that across because he’s old, grumpy and stuck in a position he doesn’t really like all that much.

Unfortunately, it’s pretty much a rule that the annoying characters in the story are the ones least likely to die… at least until they’ve made life as difficult as possible. Phlunt’s got a ways to go.
Still, we’ll likely find a way to stick it to him.
The whole discussion would be more interesting if there was even the tiniest shred of evidence that Phlunt wasn’t 100% on the up-and-up.

Besides the fact that he changed the deal at the last minute, conveniently didn’t show until the Inquest were gone, and continued to be a obstructive jerk even after he got his way?

Silly man, clearly we need to get a subpoena to get Phlunt in court and get him tried by a jury with the right amount of evidence. And then we will only be able to get him a couple of years in jail.
Is this real life? Is this just fantasy?

He made a completely reasonable demand in light of newly discovered facts. That’s what leaders do. He should be applauded for stepping up and putting an irresponsible child in her place, not lambasted.
It would be very suspicious if he’d been there before the Inquest was gone. He wasn’t contacted until after they were gone. Try to follow the plot, it’s not that complicated.
He didn’t do anything ‘obstructive’ after he ‘got his way’. He came to the summit just like all the other leaders.
I wouldn’t call it reasonable. He demanded we hand over the device when it seemed that it could attract mordrem by tinkering with WP energies. The first thought I had was how it could be weaponized and that the arcane council is full of inquest sympathizers. Inquest who just showed they are interested in the machine. Inquest who wants to manipulate draconic energy. I would call it suspicious.
Deaths Fear [Fear] / The Hardcore Caravan [HC]

It’s not “Full” of inquest sympathizers, it just has one or two on it.
Also, thinking on it.
What if he took it because he didn’t want the device damaged or destroyed by a mordrem attack at whatever location Taimi/biconics were camping in?
Also the fact Taimi would have to carry that thing everywhere, couldn’t just leave it sitting around.
The first thought I had was how it could be weaponized…
My first thought was ‘Taimi, this demonstration is going to attract Mordrem!’ Perhaps Phlunt had the same thought and thus asked for the demonstration, risking his life to cover up his play for the device? Which is beginning to remind me of Vyacheslav and his Sonic Vaporizer, so I’m not convinced an asura could be dumb enough to misuse such an item. Completely shirk safety protocols, sure, but not implement a plan where they risk dying is a step.
Your concern just seems like you’re suspicious of your own shadow. Any asura invention can be weaponized.
I did say I hate asura in general so in my defense, I’m biased against them. XD

At the start, fixing the waypoint problem was the only requirement to get him to come to the summit. After the demonstration to prove that it worked (which was unnecessary since Taimi explained how it worked previously in Part 1), he then changes the deal at the very least minute. Regardless of his intent, that’s an underhanded and cheap move to pull.

Try following your own advice. He and his “guards” weren’t present during the fight to save Taimi at all, only strutting in after we did all the hard work.
I presume you are referring to Part 1, where we killed all the Inquest to secure the lab first.
He didn’t do anything ‘obstructive’ after he ‘got his way’. He came to the summit just like all the other leaders.
And then he preceded to whine as much as they did, stating that dealing with the dragon was our job (despite that the dragons will kill/corrupt everyone if they win), implying the asura could stay safe in Rata Sum while the dragons kill everyone else, and only capitulating after we pointed out how the Destroyers kicked them out of the Depths.

You make it sound as if something terrible happened. He just took something dangerous away from an irresponsible child that wasn’t being properly supervised. I wouldn’t even want him around serious business like a summit of leaders of nations if he didn’t have enough sense to do that. Who would want to ally themselves with a party that can’t govern itself properly and leave machinery that could do disastrous things to global transit in the hands of immature brats?. Taking that Macgyvery thing away was him proving that he was taking the whole business very seriously.

When you said ‘showed’ I assumed you meant when he first showed up. I didn’t work very hard to save Taimi though, I have to say. I’ve done that instance on several characters, and always sit back hoping that they’ll actually get Taimi this time.

That doesn’t constitute being an obstructive jerk, most certainly not when he lets himself be swayed before a minute had passed.

Need I point out that the “irresponsible child” was the only one working on a solution to the waypoint issue? Never is it even implied that anyone else is trying to make a solution to the vines leeching the waypoints. And we don’t count as adequate supervision, eh? At least we can protect her, unlike Phlunt and his guards who can’t even defend themselves.
Also, the proper term for an asuran child is progeny. If you’re going to belittle her, do it right. And the device is a W.R.D. (waypoint recalibration device) Please remember that, will you?
Also, Taimi created it herself, outside of Rata Sum, on her own time, and made it clear she had no malicious purposes for the device. She has her childish moments, but this isn’t as such. Stop acting as if it is.

Yes, yes it is. He demanded to know what the Pact is doing when he could’ve easily found out himself if he cared to ask before this (or even talk to other asura in the Pact), basically said “You beat Zhaitan, just beat this one too!”, and when we point out that Zhaitan took a toll on the orders, his reply is “Oh well, your problem. Many of those lost were asura.” He then goes on to say that they’re safe in Rata Sum, asking why they should bother helping the rest of us (implying that the Council might just choose to let the rest of the world rot, also implied in the asuran order intro arc), and then we mention how the Destroyers kicked them out of the Depths. Only then does he decide to be nice, saying they’ll take part. “For now.”
Feel free to go back and read his dialogue again (either wiki or instance) and see if I didn’t sum up the gist of what he said.
There’s only one obstructive jerk in the whole scenario, and that’s Taimi.
Only during that “Imma run away” moment, which was partly caused by Phlunt being an insensitive prick.
Aside from that and her stupid moment of trying to hop into Omadd’s machine, she’s been fine so far. Need I mention again that she was the only one to make a device to solve the major problem with the waypoints again?

Who would want to ally themselves with a party that can’t govern itself properly and leave machinery that could do disastrous things to global transit in the hands of immature brats?.
Funny you should mention that.
…the Arcane Council seems to have a regular dosage of espionage amongst its members, such as when Councillor Haia attempted to kill off the rest of the Arcane Council.
The Arcane Council openly accepts the Inquest and their invention, even having a member of the Inquest on the Arcane Council. The Inquest is used to regulate undesired but needed projects so that members of the Arcane Council can busy themselves with their own projects. The Arcane Council also protects the Inquest against claims (truthful or not) of the Inquest stealing other krewes’ works.
Who wanted to steal Taimi’s device again when we went after her in Dry Top?
We all know the council is rotten and corrupt from asura personal story (which already happened as per LS season 2 and thus should bear consideration significantly among asura PC)
<Character name>: I had no idea the council was corrupt enough to hoard information that could help Tyria deal with the dragons.
Now why would I trust this particular device to the Arcane Council?
You know, after reading Manasa’s posts again, I am now convinced he is Inquest or is a member of Arcane Eye!

Oh, you mean the fight that was a very solid distance away, which involved Taimi fleeing the scene in her golem, and which player and Braham chased her.
My main is a human necromancer, but you may have missed this TINY little detail.
Asura are shorter then everybody else. We are talking about an older Asura.
Why would he actually be present at Scruffy breaking down if WE the player only just caught up to her? And we chased after her first.
They were ‘strutting in’ because they JUST CAUGHT UP TO YOU.
You know, after reading Manasa’s posts again, I am now convinced he is Inquest or is a member of Arcane Eye!
You must’ve missed the meeting then. IIRC, after clearing the Mordrem around him, he goes “Arcane Eye, to me!” and leaves.
Course, there is also the fact IIRC that the Arcane Eye reports to the Arcane council.

Need I point out that she was the only one working on a solution because she was the only one with access to very important materials pertaining to how ley lines interact with waypoints, as found in Scarlet’s room in Prosperity? Materials she didn’t want us to report to anyone because she didn’t want them taken away, and that she was mostly concerned with writing a dissertation that would make her famous. Greedy and quite obstructive. (And for some moronic reason, we agree!)

Also, Taimi created it herself, outside of Rata Sum, on her own time, and made it clear she had no malicious purposes for the device. She has her childish moments, but this isn’t as such. Stop acting as if it is.
Wait, what? She has been a childish brat from the moment she first appeared, and never stopped being one at any time. If I’d had a choice in it, I never would have had any involvement with her and her ridiculous Scarlet-fangirl ways at all.
That doesn’t constitute being an obstructive jerk, most certainly not when he lets himself be swayed before a minute had passed.
Yes, that’s what he said. That makes him neither obstructive, nor a jerk.
Need I mention again that she was the only one in a position to make such a machine because she selfishly kept all of Scarlet’s ley line research to herself, going all hysterical by the mere mention of reporting the room to some authority? Childish, selfish, greedy, vain, obstructive, jerkish. That’s Taimi.
I wonder… if we ever reported the leyline hub to the arcane council immediately, would we have found a way to disrupt Mordremoth’s feeding? It might be choosing the lesser evil. At least Taimi, we could monitor whereas the Arcane Council, possibly along with their less trustworthy members would’ve been free to do whatever they wanted and monopolized the hub.
And in fairness to Taimi, we did say:
I don’t like to think about what the Inquest would do in this place. This group doesn’t look like Aetherblades, but they’d be just as dangerous if they had access to Scarlet’s devices.
I’m not saying I like Taimi… As I’ve mentioned, I dislike Asura in general. It’s just that I trust the council less than the brat.

I’ll admit that I’d forgotten about her stupid “you can’t tell anyone” moment. And, admittedly her access to such material may have given her an edge towards the solution. However, it is never shown, stated, or even implied that anyone else was working on a solution, when the vines are all over the place touching the waypoints and/or strangling them. You’d think that alone would’ve gotten at least some of the nearby krewes to look into it.
Wait, what? She has been a childish brat from the moment she first appeared, and never stopped being one at any time. If I’d had a choice in it, I never would have had any involvement with her and her ridiculous Scarlet-fangirl ways at all.
Thankfully, she seems to have gotten out of the Scarlet fangirling…for now. And that is not an adequate response to my point about her making the device (with some help from us), and being the only one trying to find a solution.

Yes, that’s what he said. That makes him neither obstructive, nor a jerk.
…Yes it does. All the other world leaders at least had semi-valid complaints (semi due to the players having potentially dealt with most of them) Phlunt was whining just because he could.
Even before his role in the Living Story, just talking to him in the Arcane Council chamber showed that he was a total jerk.

That doesn’t change that she was the only one working on a solution at the time. Almost no one else seemed to even notice or care about the vines messing with the waypoints, and there’s no indication that the Arcane Council or any krewes were at least trying to solve the issue.
Besides, the Council has also shown nearly all of the traits you just named for Taimi as well. As Leo Paul pointed out, they were willing to withhold the knowledge of dragons consuming magikittenil they could exploit it themselves, as the asuran pre-order arc reveals. Not to mention their ties to the Inquest, along with a certain councillor trying to kill the rest in one mission…
For all of Taimi’s flaws, she’s still more trustworthy (or failing that, easier to deal with) than the Arcane Council.

Yeah… big thing there and we agree Manasa.
Taimi was the only one working on it/working with progress, because she had access to the ley lines AND Scarlet’s extensive research on it.
Research that, IIRC, was purely theoretical without any hard backing/real work before now, for the Asura that is.
Also the fact Braham/Rox, somebody in the biconics mentions telling the authorities about it (or at least the priory), and Taimi goes “NO NO NO. DON’T DO THAT.” Why? Because they might trample an important paper/thing (If Priory, nope. If Asura leadership? yes). And, because it is the source matereal for her future paper that will make her famous. So, as I say below, the reason nobody else appears to work on it is because they CAN’T. BECAUSE OF TAIMI. And then she refuses to give up her device and research, even though it could vastly help them speed up the reprogramming of the waypoints (if it’s not all complete by time of that meeting that is), or prevent FUTURE issues like this from happening.
Nope, people here say we should side with the teenager refusing to give anything up because it’s her claim to fame.
I’ll admit that I’d forgotten about her stupid “you can’t tell anyone” moment. And, admittedly her access to such material may have given her an edge towards the solution. Might I point out that until she actually had the device mostly built, we never even actually TALKED to the Asura authorities, or any real krewes? Hard to say “Oh, they did NOTHING.” when we have zero evidence to back that up. Like how people said the Pact was doing NOTHING, yet IIRC, Trahearne outright says they have plans against Mordmoth already being built up, and forward bases scouted out.

Her ‘fangirling’ wasn’t praising Scarlet for her evil deeds. It was more admiring the engineering feats Scarlet had done, as well as how she learned what she wanted, and didn’t let rules restrict her.
She ‘grew out of it’ during battle of LA.

Phlunt: “I will attend the summit, but only after I verify that this device can protect our waypoint network from marauding vines. Otherwise, I’ll have to return to my lab.”
I think that pretty much implies that they’re working on saving the waypoints themselves. Work he’s understandably only prepared to abandon if a solution presents itself that would make their own work obsolete. A completely rational and reasonable position. We can only imagine how much faster they’d have completed their own solution if they’d had access to Scarlet’s research. Speaking for myself, I would imagine they’d have done it much faster than Taimi did it, because they probably spend less time shrieking and throwing tantrums back in their fully stocked labs where there’s no need to navigate traps while searching random bits of machinery to salvage parts from.

Being uncooperative isn’t the same as being obstructive. He wasn’t doing anything to stop or hinder anyone from doing whatever the hell they wanted to do. He just didn’t want to be a part of it.

Well, yes, asura in general are a worthless bunch of rats that evolution had better left alone. Like Leo, I strongly dislike them. But we’re seeking alliance with them, and within the scope of that distasteful goal, Phlunt is the one making reasonable moves while Taimi is a petulant, greedy crybaby.

Seriously. My character would be having none of his attitude.
You know the line in “Recalibrating the Waypoints” as response to Taimi’s question if I brought weapons?
“We won’t be assaulting Phlunt”
I just couldn’t get myself to click it….
I’m all with you, he deserves to die! He makes Trahearne look good….
If someone deserves the death penalty for just not being nice, then we might aswell kill 80% of the world’s population… :/
There are only so many orphanages.
If I call you Ghandi, will that make you happy?
LOL. Alright.
I’m very late to this party, so apologies for that.
However! I once played Civilizations IV, and Ghandi invaded my country. I had done nothing but be super nice and yet he invaded. Yes, that’s right, Ghandi invaded my country.*
Since then, I wouldn’t trust him as far as I could throw him. :/
*Admittedly, I was playing as the English, but that’s not the point!
Admittedly, I was playing as the English, but that’s not the point!
lol
In Civilization, I came to Ghandi as an ally (Tokugawa). He declared war for no reason, and I beat him into submission. That oughtta calm him down, right? Nope.
I don’t think he has anything on the bloodthirst of Montezuma in V, though.
Phlunt was “mean to Taimi” because she’s a brat with zero sense of responsibility who has yet to learn she can’t do anything she wants without consequence. She’s an entertaining character for sure, but Phlunt’s actions make every sense in the world. I hope they write more characters like him.

Meanwhile Taimi is trying to save the waypoints from mordrem while Phlunt is twiddling his thumbs because he doesn’t think the dragon is an issue for Rata Sum at first, and all she wants is credit for the invention she worked on so vigorously.
Responsibility, who has it?
Zarin Mistcloak(THF) Valkyrie Mistblade(WAR) Kossori Mistwalker(REV) Durendal Mistward(GRD)
I used to think (build op, pls nerf) like you, but then I took a nerf to the knee.
Is that fanfiction? It’s certainly not what happened in the Living Story.
Nah… we just need to make a sport out of punting Phlunt off the side of Rata Sum!
This is how it would work:
(1) We bind Phlunt with rope & bungee cord.
(2) Next, we tie the really long cord to a secure, strong object like a wall.
(3) Then one person gets to kick him off the side of Rata Sum!
(4) Once the bungee cord stop bouncing, we reel him back into Rata Sum!
(5) Repeat steps 3 & 4
I call this game “Punt Phlunt”.
Remember, he has to be alive for this work! Killing Phlunt would take the fun out of this!

Lol you guys are forgetting how easy it would be for a mesmer to just disguise, execute, and portal out.
They would never know the commander was there o.O.
Don’t need to kill him either….just teach him a lesson….

I took her head.
With everyone’s security compromised, if so much as a petal is askew everyone in the area will be questioned.
Trahearne: “Commander, where were you during this incident?”
As Kasmeer is looking dead at you.Commander: Good thing my helmet and goggles are on so Kasmeer can’t tell I’m lying.
“I was at the zoo in divinities reach.” (Or at least an image of me was) …. “Why are you even here? You should be researching the dragon at the Priory….Get back to work before you disappoint both Marjory and myself!”
Kasmeer: …. okay boss… sniffle
The only person who knew it was an illusion is dead.
Now they will never know my secret.
Don’t forget, your body language too, can be read…
Well, atleast Phlunt was the only one to come, since other Arcane Council members are even less to cooperate unless they get big profits…
I rarely do PvP or Hard PvE, unless it’s organized.
