Charge for All Episodes - regardless
This thread is starting to make me chuckle.
“Having to purchase it makes for better content”
As a GW1 vet, I have one word for you….. Factions.
A loooooot of players absolutely hated that campaign, which I never completely understood. However they would argue that just because they had to buy it didn’t make it worth what they paid.
I loved factions — quite possibly my favorite after vanilla GW1. I still miss my Rit.
The key statement in your post was “had to buy it”… they didn’t have to buy anything. It was their choice. They could read a review of factions and decide for themselves if it’s worth buying. That’s why B2P is so awesome.
EDIT:
And for $35 it blows the pants off of anything given away for “free” in GW2 so far. The amount of content and quality of content in Factions was enormous.
I would refrain from using GW1 as an example since everything about GW1 supports B2P producing quality content.

Even though the campaign wasn’t really my favorite, I still take factions over all the Living Story updates we got so far.
-New campaign
-New continent
-2 new professions
-and much more
-and all permanent
I don’t see Living Story deliver that anytime soon.

I have to admit I didn’t like factions to start with. I found Kaning a bit of a mess at first. But it grew on me. And they areas in the game are beautiful. I didn’t have a problem with nightfall. I enjoyed that also. But I would say it’s the one I’ve played the least. Eye of the North on the other hand. I loved that. It felt epic, and just like in Prophices, you the player where the centre of it all. They felt like true personal story’s.

Thing is, the expansion gave us all that at once (essentially), Living Story can easily be argued to only give us a fraction of any of those choices in the future and still not be “worth it” in some eyes. Even if July 1 gives us a Monk class, and 2 months later playable Tengu, we would still see more compare Factions to either or update, but neither both.
Though Factions was not my favorite, even the newest class addition they added I absolutely despised, Shadowfall was more what I loved. However, was still upset to this day those classes were, originally secluded to JUST those expansions.
While I much prefer GW1’s expansion method over this gem store and economy based gaming, I doubt LS releases would ever be worth paying for, or that it would do anything to change the gems and gems → gold centered development.
What you’re suggesting, OP is that Anet would somehow magically change the living story to suit your interests if you just paid them more money per patch, which isn’t too different from a subscription as everyone has been saying.
That isn’t going to happen. Anet has their own ideas for what they want with the living story. Even if they charged for new living story content every two weeks (which is ludicrous and completely goes against their business model) there is no guarantee that they will make something that fans would find appealing enough to purchase. It will not force anet to make content that YOU would want
What they are doing now is a decent compromise. If people missed it, they can buy it if they really want to throw down cash for new content. If they don’t care, no sweat, you won’t lose out. Furthermore I would NEVER pay every two weeks for the living story the way it is now. It’s just not worth it.
Aside from that, I would gladly pay for entirely maps if they were available. Maybe not something as small as Southsun cove, but I really just want them to open up the world of Tyria again. Like sub-expansions or something. A subscription forces you to pay for your time spent in game, while this would be paying for content directly.
Edit: Wildstar is NCsoft’s subscription based game. Your suggestion would put Anet in direct competition with Wildstar which will not help their sales, but hurt it. They are NOT going to compete with Wildstar on that front for that reason alone. I’m sure NCsoft is making this distinction on purpose.

Except it’s not a subscription. This was explained earlier — like on page one.
I would like the same things as you — a new zone, new professions, etc. I don’t mind paying for them.
Right now ANet is not using that business model. My suggestion is a thinly veiled desire that ANet would switch from a cosmetic consumer model to a content consumer model.

I admire your vision, and to be honest I feel more on boat with the ideal. The thing is, the LS stuff, though being free essentially, gives us stuff that changed the world, regardless if the content remained. In spite of the big, visual overhauls, the content that was overall consumable were essentially boss fights and mini-games on a monthly basis. Nothing is wrong with that, actually, but hardly worth gem prices. If this became something tangible, it may be “sold” to late-to-the-story players that can eventually buy the Season 2 “Journal” to experience, but overall I do not see this being a thing that A-Net can respond to fast enough.
LS, to me, is something that keeps the world “breathing” in some form or another, whether or not it’s paid for. If you suggest the pay-for-content route, the game may not experience the frequency of said content that would be comparable to the frequency that LS is “spoiling us” with.
The more I think about it, the more I feel this topic is moot.
ANet will eventually move to a content driven model on its own — it will be necessary for its own survival. The charge for late access to LS2 is just the first step in that direction.
I’m demanding it should be paid for because I believe the game needs this fundamental change in development for it’s long term survival (and my personal enjoyment).
How exactly is the long term survival of this game linked to your personal enjoyment?
And you’re “demanding” it? LMAO…….come on, be serious…..or at least realistic…..lol

If you seriously believe that, then why did you even start this thread? Your arguments and statements in this thread make no logical point, imo.
What I think the main purpose of this thread is…….‘change the game to what I would like it to be, and heck with the rest of the playerbase’. Tons of people in this thread completely disagree with you, so you change it all to a “moot point”, and state that the game is already following your suggestions. Um yea, ok…whatever…..lol.
But I appreciate the good chuckles I have had with this thread…..lol
Yet another ‘change the game to what I want, or it will die!!!’ thread……lol
Mmo players with a screw loose vs mmo players with two screws loose. All very important stuff.
