Cin Business and inventory spam.
I was disappointed to see that Cin didn’t want any of his stuff and I had been carrying around pelts and wood for no reason. Along with the extra seafood and crawfish and pearls and jellyfish and …. AAAAHHHHHH!
I completely agree with you. We have to carry multiple instances of these items on each toon we bring along. Clogs up space and is getting repetitive.
I absolutely agree as well. I would love if there was a way to deal with these kinds of items in a more streamlined way cause what bugs me right now is how inconsistent it all is.
Like, for example, there are some items that drop only for collections and actually have a nice little text “This item only has value as part of a collection” or something which indicates that it can be safely discarded or sold. So far so good. But then you have items that don’t and I’m never really sure if I can get rid of it or if I might need it later for something. It certainly doesn’t help when it turns out to be an item that gets this tedious “If you want to delete type in the name” extra step which makes it seem important enough that the devs don’t want you to delete it accidentally… but then it turns out you never need it for anything but until you find out it clutters up your inventory.
There are also items that I think would totally benefit from being integrated into the game adding some additional flavour. Like Gin’s collections should be handed in to him after finishing it. That would make the whole thing very satisfying.
Similarly, the books we collect would be perfect for being turned over to some agent/scholar/etc. I don’t even want a reward, just knowing that the information I collected would be interesting for someone in the game story-wise would be very satisfying already and I would know what to do with those things. But apparently they’re either meant to gather dust in my back pack or be thrown away entirely making the whole collection idea pretty pointless in the first place.
So it’s ok to delete these items as soon as you find them? They’re kittening me off so much I sort of don’t even care if I’m supposed to hold on to them.
Anet, for over a year now you guys have been having a serious issue making achievement items clog up inventories for absolutely no reason. As far as I know, some legendary collection items STILL make you type their name out to delete them which is absolutely ridiculous, and they serve no other purpose. Single-acquisition collection items (not like the spoons bought for karma) should all be like the exotic accessories for the specialization collections; each one has SOME sell value to merchants to easily (and rewardingly) get rid of useless crap that serves no other purpose.
I have yet to figure out what they use to determine if you should keep something or not that way. For example, you need to type out ‘Orphan Laine’s Letter’ every year in order to delete it (and on every character if I remember right) and it serves no purpose after you have read it.
I appreciate the positive feedback. It’s been weeks now and ArenaNet still haven’t addressed this, which I find kinda weird.
Also, for what it’s worth after finishing the whole collection, the worst IMO was the random ghosts in the lumber yard event. Many players probably spent hours waiting around for that dumb event… not a fan :/

um, you can just throw them away…
Just to be sure I kept all the cin items until I got the achievement complete. Then the pleasure of erasing them was insurmontable.

Although you can just throw them away, I know many players (myself included) who don’t like to throw away collection items until the collection is completed. Perhaps a separate wallet or bag that only holds items like this so regular bag and bank slots are cluttered?

The achievement tracks which ones you have found, or not found, and shows tooltips. Other than being able to drag them around to different slots, that sounds like what you want to me?
My only complaint about this collection is that I would’ve liked to be able to sell those items to a merchant, even if it was for just a copper. Or if Cin really did want these items, that talking to him would allow him to take them off our hands.

Well, you have the achievement log for that, as others said. The only thing missing is the ability to link items in chat directly from the achievement log. Works with rewards, but not with collection items unfortunately. That’s why I am keeping some of mine in inventory, because they’re fun to link to chat in some situations.
Items that are only meant to be collections shouldn even use iventory space. It doesn’t make sense. Just add them to the collection table and we are done.

Full agreement with the statements in this thread. If a collection item can’t be sold or handed in, don’t make it an actual item in the inventory. Pointless clutter is just annoying.

I can pretty much promise that if it was trivial to do that within the capabilities of the engine, the developers would do so. Which they have not, so we can infer: not so easy as it sounds, I guess. :/

It’s not pointless:
- Some people don’t feel they have gotten (or earned) unless there’s a, um, ‘physical’ item that appears in inventory.
- It makes some types of troubleshooting easier.
I don’t have a problem with having the items; I just think they should be easier to dispose of: always labeled correctly as “part of a collection only”, always have a vendor value, and never require typing out the name to delete.

They HAVE done it, however – some of the pieces that go into the order backpacks go straight to the collection achievement without touching your inventory.
Those examples are part of the rewards for completing a story step, however, so it might be that the specific means of gaining them gives them options they wouldn’t normally have.
People don’t hate Scarlet like Game of Thrones fans hate Joffrey.
They hate her the way Star Wars fans hate Jar Jar Binks.

You’re right, they can do it and they have done it, they did it in the previous LS episodes and this one; the letters left around by E, for example, unlock collection entries without requiring or creating an item, same with Mursaat tokens and tablets, the coins in Dry Top, badges in Silverwastes and so on. They can do it, they just didn’t do it that way, instead opting to produce items with no monetary value and no “This item only has value as part of a collection.” tagline.

I don’t think so, they have proven that they can unlock collection entries from interacting with objects, completing dynamic events, dancing in front of the queen, “stealth gliding” as a particular class. The collection framework seems to be very powerful and can trigger off many different kinds of events in game.
You are right. They did do that. I stand corrected — I literally couldn’t think of any examples of it happening direct to achievement, and I was wrong.
Except those ‘collections’ were all the exact same item. It might be different when there are different items, and some/all have flavor text and different icons. Dunno.
I, personally (and this is just me), would miss getting an actual item. I love keeping my souvenirs. (Still have ‘Soggy Bag’. Lol) /shrug

They’re not the same item, they’re all different items with unique ID numbers. They happen to have similar names but as far as the game is concerned “Journal Page 2” is entirely different to “Journal Page 4” (because their identifiers are different).
Not sure the Mursaat Tokens, Gold Coins, Badges, etc. have different ID numbers, but as I’ve never seen one, I can’t be sure. /shrug
I hate the items, and I hate myself because I’m too lazy and coward to just erase them ASAP.

They really need to add a Lore tab to the Hero screen.
Then they would have a permanent place to store books and collectibles that shouldn’t really be inventory items that we could refer back to whenever we wanted to.

Of course they have unique IDs; if they didn’t then the game wouldn’t be able to tell them apart.
Trust me, I’m a software engineer.

But I like my inventory items!
looks sideways at heaps of pretty flowers from the Leaf of Kudzu collection filling her inventory
You’re welcome to discard them, but don’t touch mine!
On a more serious note, I do support the suggestion of unifying these collection items, including adding a tooltip line of “this item is only used as part of a collection” to all such items and making them discardable without having to type out the item name (if the collection really is their only use).
I do not support automatically categorizing collection items as trash, as I don’t want to auto-sell all of mine, nor do I think adding a vendor price to all of them is a good idea, since some collection items can actually be gathered multiple times for a reason.
And while we’re in suggestion land, I’d like to be able to chat-link collection items directly from the achievement/collection menu, for practical as well as fun reasons.
