Class 1 Magic Rift (Current Events)
If you’ve been hanging around the pond and have not seen a rift that you can jump into, I would open a support ticket. That seems very unlikely.
The rifts don’t automatically open anymore, so you’ll need to find someone to open one for you. Unopened rifts are marked as nearby events and can be found in various maps. Since they’re an easy way to complete events, you may want to try finding one in a map where it’s the daily to complete events.
I almost always open Rifts in the map that’s the current Daily Event map (if it is a map that has lots of Rift events). The best maps, probably, are the Ascalon maps, though I usually find quite a few in the Shiverpeaks, especially Frostgorge, as well.
You could always message me, and I will open one for you, if I’m in-game.
Good luck.

The very first rift that started the sequence to receive a Stabilizer was always automatic. Did Anet say that they changed that so you have to depend on another player for your ability to get a Stabilizer?
So I’ve only ever found 2 rifts on my main, and 1 rift on an alt who didn’t yet have a stabilizer. I’ve actually given up on ever getting a class II stabilizer because of that, its way too big of a time investment at this point for me to chase down rifts that might as well not exist.

I can’t test the question of whether the very first rift doesn’t open anymore because afaik this event is account-wide. I only have a Stabilizer on 1 of 8 characters, yet I see rift event dots on all my characters.
Really? Maybe I just spend my time in the wrong maps, are there any that are more/less prone to getting rifts?

I don’t think so. I mostly go to maps when the Daily Event completer is there. So I’m looking for events and see rift dots quite frequently. Unfortunately you can only tell that they’re rift dots if you know where events usually spawn on that map so you know that the dot you’re looking at isn’t a regular map event. I wish that Anet would have made the rift dots different.
Maybe it has to do with the number of players on the map?
Y’all are welcome to ping me in-game if you see me, and ask. I’ll generally be quite happy to open rifts for people. (Though, more often, I open them in passing because they advance the map reward counter…)
I decided I wanted a second stabilizer, so I restarted the quest on another toon. I didn’t have any trouble progressing it by following the wiki’s advice. At the time, I didn’t think I got particularly lucky, but the bottleneck for me was getting the rift to appear in the first map.
I had a problem with this months ago also.
I was in Hoelbrak and happened to come across a rift near the Sigfast’s Landing point of interest. I think it was a class 1 rift (might have been a class 2), but the wiki doesn’t have that specific spot in the town listed for a class 1 rift to spawn. It has only the Brawler’s Bout poi in the middle of the town listed https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Class_I_Magic_Rift#Locations
After jumping into the rift I was transferred to Fields of Ruin, just a little east of the Tyler’s Bivouac Waypoint. I was confused at the time wondering what happened. Since that character was fairly new and I hadn’t done much with it yet, so I left.
A few days later I looked it up on the wiki and Dulfy’s guide on her site. They all said the same thing: jump into rift, grab item at bottom of pond, give item to NPC at pond. https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Class_I_Rift_Stabilizer#Acquisition
http://dulfy.net/2016/10/04/gw2-october-4-current-events-guide/
1. Go to [&BM8AAAA=] Gillscale Pond in Fields of Ruin. Look for a Class I Magic Rift around the pond and jump through it, it should port you directly above the pond and you drop down underwater.
I went there a few days later on a different character. I ran circles around that pond for a good 2 hours and didn’t see a single rift appear to jump into. So I then switched to the character I had jumped into a rift with in Hoelbrak and made my way to the pond and………nothing. No rift at the pond and no ‘???’ item in the pond to pick up.
I vaguely remember (sometime before I tried this) something about this particular event being disabled, but don’t recall if it was ever re-enabled. Edit: I think this was it: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/lwd/Magic-Rift-Issue (later in the thread it said the issue was fixed)
I also just went to the pond while writing this on the character I jumped through the rift with, and still nothing at the pond.
So, I have no idea how to even start this thing to get the rift stabilizer.

Hopefully everyone is filing bug reports about this so Anet can fix the issue.
I would love to know if it is of any future relevance to do this with each and every single one of your characters? Will it affect the characters who haven’t gotten the device yet and have not completed the task story-wise? (I’ve only done it on two characters and that was enough of a hassle for me at the time. )
I just get the Stabilizer on as many characters as I play relatively often, as the Stabilizer is great for Daily Map events.
Otherwise, I doubt it makes a difference. (It’s probably account-wide, as far as story goes, like the other Current Events.)

I didn’t realize that the rifts counted as events for the Daily. I’ll have to try to get more Stabilizers also, assuming Anet fixes the ability to start the process.

It doesn’t. What Inculpatus cedo meant was that you can travel to certain locations faster using the device.
No, they do count as Daily Map events; or, unless recently changed, they did. I would certainly never use a Rift Stabilizer to travel to a map. That would take much longer.

Well, I use it to travel to dry top when I want the jumping puzzle, because it saves hoping for a port and avoids the annoying climb… but yeah.
It counts as event completion on the map, for everything that counts for — both the daily event completion challenge, and for map bonus progression.
Yeah, that’s one specific instance, but for using it to travel to an event or something….not so much.
Unless, I guess, you have a handy Rift open/to open (unlikely), and have memorized all the coordinates for the different maps/areas.
It can be useful if you don’t like using waypoints and Fields of Ruin is more convenient to get to than the map you’re going to.
Broadly speaking, though, I think ArenaNet should make it so that spontaneous rifts still occur around the pond… or make it so that there’s some way for a player to trigger one (talking to Weirdbringer, for instance). It’d also be nice if they made the thing account-bound rather than soulbound.

I support both of these suggestions very much
I looked up the wiki about that quest line once and wanted to do it, so i went to the pond, jumped in and interacted with the ‘’???’’ thing at the bottom of the pond. It gave me a gizmo to show the Charr npc and went on from there.
Tip: when he says ‘’wait a minute’’, wait the minute. =)
cough cough dulfy guides cough cough

There you go. =P

If you read the entire thread, people are saying that they tried this and there was no rift at the pond for them to jump into.
How long ago did you get the gizmo? The thought is that perhaps the quest line has been broken sometime recently.

Rifts stopped automatically opening within the first month, likely with the following patch once it was no longer the current event.
So how are players supposed to advance that current event chain now?
^As noted above, jump through any Rift that has been opened. Again, I’m sure any number of players would be happy to open a Rift, anywhere in Tyria. I open them whenever I come across one, whether it’s needed for Dailies, or not.
Good luck.

I’m hoping that Anet wasn’t so shortsighted as to purposefully stop the initial rift at Gillscale Pond from opening automatically. Since you have to grab the item there and talk to the NPC there, and since all the guides talk about entering your first Rift there, of course people are going to go there to begin the sequence. But of course there aren’t going to be many people there that could possibly open a Rift for you unless it is a daily zone.
I am giving Anet the benefit of the doubt by assuming that Rifts not automatically opening at Gillscale Pond is a bug.
As for starting the sequence by jumping into just any Rift, I can’t remember the last time I actually saw a Rift. Probably at least 2 months ago.
(edited by Djinn.9245)
I only started (and completed) the thing with the rifts a month and a half ago, so if they did disable the rifts it must have been more recently. I do remember having to wait on the NPC around the pond to do something, and I thought it was bugged but it turned out I wasn’t giving him time to finish his job.

Oh I misunderstood what he meant. I haven’t found any rifts in the game in months. I’ve found a grand total of 3 rifts since my main got his stabilizer a few months ago. 1 rift was the one that opened itself to start the chain, I found another one about 30 minutes later, and I didn’t see any other rift until last week, but it was on a character that didn’t have a stabilizer.
If they just aren’t even appearing for me, how am I supposed to advance this chain of current events?

Unopened rifts are hidden, can only be found in certain zones and are marked as nearby events on the map. If you don’t have the map completed, the compass may be overridden and point to a nearby map objective instead.

I,ve been playing for 6 months, si i’d say it was about 3 months ago. After diving into the pond, i talked to that lovely Charr lad and he graciouly fixed my gizmo. I then proceeded to the little clearing just north of the pond and used the freaking thing.
POOF!!!! A nice rift opened up.
That quest line is really some messed up crap. First, you cant open a rift anywhere anytime. Second, the gizmo thing changes your skill bar, it could be numbers, or it could be some random crap that dont really take you anywhere.
But am I going to complain over some messed up, bugged up, butched up, hard to understand, abandoned quest line that is not getting me anywhere? No sir.

So you didn’t complete it recently. That seems to match up with the idea that it is CURRENTLY broken.
As for it being “messed up”, there are guides to the entire Rift subject that will explain everything to you, if you choose to search online. How did people figure out the guides? Because it actually isn’t that difficult to figure out, it just takes time to figure out what the controls do using trial and error.
Once you know what you can do with the controls, its actually pretty cool.
It doesn’t matter if the map is completed; you don’t need the compass to find Rift events. Anytime you see the little orange circle/star marker on a map, it may be a Rift event. Rift events happen in almost every map, including Cities.
There have been several threads from player lamenting about ‘broken events’, in all sorts or maps, only to find out these are Rift events.
Again, one can always ask in Map Chat if another player would be willing to open a Rift to start the ‘quest’.
Good luck.

Those markers are a part of the compass (content guide), which points towards the closest objective. If any other objective has priority, you won’t be able to see them. Turn off the content guide and they won’t be shown at all.
Really. My client must be broken, then, because I see those Rift events on characters that have not completed the map. I tend to only use characters that haven’t completed the map so I can fulfill ‘two birds with one stone’. What won’t appear with a Rift Event is the announcement, ‘New Event Nearby’. You just see them on the mini-map.
Sad for others, then, I guess.

I see Rift event dots on maps all the time also. And I do the same as you most of the time – playing alts on maps that they have not completed yet.
Healix is certainly right that dotsthat indicate unstarted events are part of the guide and that you can turn it off. I’m just not sure why he’s making that response to you.

The content guide points towards the nearest objective, but some objectives have priority over others. Turn it off and you can’t see rifts. Likewise, when something else has priority, you won’t be able to see any rifts. I never said that map completion was required, only that it may override the guide and prevent you from seeing them. You could be standing under a rift and never know it. With the map completed, you can see the nearest event from the other end of the map. Enable the story however and it will override the guide, preventing you from seeing any.
No, they do count as Daily Map events; or, unless recently changed, they did. I would certainly never use a Rift Stabilizer to travel to a map. That would take much longer.
As stated by some others, you can get to spots faster that would otherwise take a lot longer to reach (climbing etc.). As also mentioned above, it’s the perfect device for the Dry Top Diving Goggle achievement.
I didn’t know it counted towards daily events, or I would have used it for that purpose. Eek!
I suppose if one has a Rift handy, and does not need to look up the coordinates, it would be faster. I’m not sure how often that happens; I know I would have to travel to a map more saturated with Rifts (say, the Ascalon maps), find a Rift, and then look up the coordinates to where I wanted to go (other than, maybe, the Dry Top one – although, I think I’ve forgotten the coordinates; 15 something, or something 15?).

Ah, I completely missed what you were trying to say. Thanks!
And yes, that is unfortunate. I wonder if that is a “bug” that Anet can fix?
I checked again and still no rift. But I did notice ‘something’.
When I got to the pond an event icon (orange circle) appeared in the middle of the lake next to the point of interest. I then went around the lake to the north side and the event icon moved to the north west side of the lake. The Charr NPC had popped up right next to me and started wandering around the lake (he is the one you give the item to you find at the bottom of the lake).
I then went along the west side of the lake going south and the icon moved back to the middle of the lake, and moved back to the north west side when I went back to the north side of the lake.
Then about a minute later the event icon moved north east of the lake near the waypoint at Halkor Meadows. I went over to it and noticed an event at the fort over there was up to stop harpies from kidnapping villagers. So I killed a few harpies and went back to the lake, then got bronze reward for the event being successful (I’m guessing another player must have been there and finished the event).
But, while at the lake the event icon stayed over by the waypoint north east of the lake. I still didn’t see any rifts to jump into, but this whole thing seemed kinda strange that I’m being told there is an event in this spot, then this spot, then this other spot, and nothing is going on at those spots.
I took some screenshots.
Those are Rift Events. If you had a Stabilizer, you could open the Rift and finish the event. You will find those ‘orange star/circles’ all over Tyria, even in Cities. They will appear and disappear; they are not static.

I suspected they were rift events. But, as stated, the problem is I can’t get the rift stabilizer thingy to open a rift because I need an open rift to get the thingy first. I’m stuck in a paradox of craziness.
As noted above, you can ask someone (Guild, friend, forum-user, Map chat) to open one for you…anywhere.
Good luck.

The point is, I shouldn’t have to run around Tyria trying to find someone to open a rift for me so I can get the device to start events myself.
Why? One has/had to ask, after the first few days, anyway, someone to summon the cat to charm from the Witch’s Outfit. Both are ‘extra’ content.
Regardless, it is offered as an option while waiting for the content to be fixed, if and when the Devs should decide to do so.
One other thing to consider is Fields of Ruin Event Completer is one of today’s dailies, so it might be a good time to try to find a rift someone left open.
