Complaining, Complaining, Complaining
Now when season 1 is over which had been active for over a year. ArenaNet now also have data and feedback for a years worth of content. People are not happy about the first season 1. And that’s good. Cause that will most likely cause changes towards season 2.
We already know that instead of a LS release every second week we will get a release more apart from one another. So what can we make out of that fact?
- More content with each release
- Probably not as much brainless zerg content
- More love and care
- More depth in story
- More replayability
And with that, the LS is gone for now, so there’s no point in complaining about it.
The big problem being ‘for now’
If it was gone for good and we would FINALLY get some expansions then I would stop criticising.

What we need is PERMANENT CONTENT.
I understand the idea behind living story but right now after almost nearly 2 years we have only few things leftover from all those patches (not including QOL improvements).
i agree op and i hope they get way better but also by what they shown i dont know if they can. im also a expansion type of person prefer ym xpac every year and a half
We’re very aware that there has been some negative feedback to LS. One reason why it keeps rolling on is because ANet haven’t made any big reassurances that it’s going to change, which leaves the expectations that the future will be the same, and then people continue to make noise about wanting it different.
And I can see why ANet wouldn’t want to throw such advance notice right now; GW2 has been out for shy of 2 years, and LS is a very large part of their marketing (because you wouldn’t get away with waving your lack of work since launch at this point). If they stick their head up and say “we screwed up” in response the the main development they’ve had since launch, they fear it could put off future sales.
Not that it’s bad to admit getting it wrong. I recall Jagex (of RuneScape) asking their player base if they screwed up on some major changes; they players said “yes, you did”, and some reconciliation recaptured some players.

We should complain if we don’t like it. If it was just few then fine but there are/were a lot of complaints about the first living story.
If we remained slient Anet will of thought everything is fine and continued to deliver a weak story. It’s clear they are improving, they just need a good story and a better delivery method.
Thankfully we have some vocal people that not only complain but say exactly why, and some even go further to offer solutions and advice.
I loved it personally. And I look forward to seeing it improve and develop over time. What some people don’t understand is that if it’s not the game for you, then it’s not. Plain and simple.

I think that the complaining has gotten worse since the end of LW S1. More likely its a self feeding loop of hate, a meme (in the sense of the selfish gene), a example of cryptomnesia. Or to put it simpler I think everyone just jumped on the LW-hate-bandwagon without knowing it.

I assume you are not educated in marketing.
It’s the regular “if you don’t like it, go away” stupidity.
Even if it’s just 10% who “go away”
How often do you think can you remove 10% of the customers until the game
is being stopped ??
It’s not that GW2 is a pure money maker already.
They already said that they are able to pay the bills but thats it.
This is the reason why the gem-shop gets new items every 20 minutes
and why China is getting all attention while the already existing customers
are being ignored. It is a desperate move
I am absolutely sure that A-Net knows exactly that they have to change something of big magnitude or they are in trouble.
Believe me. There are other people out there beside these days kids who really like
GW2 and are able to spend money in the gem store.
But this group is constantly yelled at to go away if they ask for something deeper than pushing button #2 and watch the screen.
The good thought is that if the game hits in China. Theyll have almost double budget. I do hope this bigger budget will allow for more updates and stuff.

More than double if its a hit in China. The east is the epicenter of gaming and expenditure in gaming, not the west.
I actually disagree that the idea was good. Instead of improving and iterating on the initial narrative structure, they did an about-face with a highly risky venture focusing primarily on fleeting content that doesn’t even align well with what they had in place for launch, resulting in a fragmented narrative and cognitive dissonance for anyone who likes to pay attention to it.
Temporary content as the primary format is not conceptually sound for an MMO, especially one that mostly appeals to casual gamers. You don’t log in for a couple of months, then when you do – not only has the world not really grown in terms of having new stuff to do, but you’ve missed major story events that you can’t revisit – why would you continue playing? Answer: you wouldn’t – you’d check out of the game completely and move on.
The LS and the over-emphasis on it is one of the primary reasons why so much of the initial player base fell off the map.

^^ this.
I agree with a lot of what has been said here. I took a brake from the game dew to just not having time and the fact that the south sun launch as a cluster kitten. I came back during the dragon bash but took no part in it. The QJ and BOFW was when I started playin the LS again. And from that point on the story didn’t flow very well. After episodes I felt the story had not moved or I had misses something. The game play intent they added, for the most part, was really fun. I really liked the ToN. LA being reduced to rubble was also great. But that had more to do with me not liking the look of the new LA. I much more liked the look of old LA, and always will.
My biggest problem with the LS is that you can’t really play it at your own pace. And like the PS you can’t replay it. It all a one time deal. I loved the story missions in guild wars. And would replay my fav ones over and over.
I really want some more content I can do at my own pace. Weather it me more PS, or maps to exsplore. LW tempory content is starting to bore me now. And with the mega servers is just going to be zurg, zurg, zurg.
I know guild war 2 is not guild wars, but if I remember right by this point in guild wars life we had Factions and Nighfall was around the corner. We had 6 PVE “Eliet” areas/dungeons. All that content kept me playing and keeps me playing it.
I want ANet to make me love guild wars 2 as much as I love guild wars. So far they are failing at this.

Eh, I loved the LS and everything about it, concept-wise.
As far as I’m concerned, the primary fault people have against it (that I agree on) is the inability to revisit events. Thing is, Personal Story ALSO had this fault, and I’ll agree that I have no clue why the option to revisit history is something ANet seems to dislike.
The primary reason we can’t revisit most of LS is because of the sheer scale of the events and the amount of players needed. This could easily be addressed by creating downscaled / simplified versions that give you an idea of what it was like. Just remove the rewards so the people who actually were a part of it still come out on top while not screwing other players out of the experience.
Whatever other flaws there are in LS pretty much amount to laziness in programming, like the inevitable first-day bugs, or the utter silliness of Lion’s Arch being wrecked in Personal Story just because someone forgot to keep an old version of the LA map to redirect into.
Well, that and it’s utterly stupid to make scale balancing part of an event’s strategy. NO ONE likes organizing a map so only a specific amount of players are in a certain area so the enemies don’t magically gain an unfeasible amount of health and strength.
I was probably about 50/50 on LS stuff once it started. I didn’t love it in the beginning, so there was a lot of stuff I missed until I started doing it just for achievements. I found a bunch of content in the LS that I ended up liking, but there was still some that I was never really in love with.
I feel like there should be some way to make the LS replayable, or at least parts of it. The content is already created so couldn’t it be modified and put into some sort of dungeon instance? It seems like they could have a lot of fun with it and maybe give the Asuras a little more story and pull by figuring out a way to send people to past content, even PS instances. A LOT of stuff happened, and it really is a shame that it can’t be revisited. That’s a lot of hard work that existed once never to be seen again, except in the memories of the people that played it.
I am cautiously optimistic about LS S2, hoping that the devs have listened to our complaints, praises, and input and put together something really spectacular. Maybe they are even working on some way to replay former content and just haven’t told us yet because they don’t want the speculation to bubble up into an uncontrollable mess yet. I know that’s not the most LIKELY scenario, but I’d like to hope we are being heard, at least.
Season 1 was an experiment, and I, for one, am not yet willing to call it a complete failure worthy of total abandonment. There were certain things done correctly and other things not done so well, but either way they have a ton of feedback to sift through and, best case scenario, they are taking what we’ve said seriously. I like to hope that maybe, just maybe, parts of the LS S1 were just too far into development to take into account a lot of what the forum-goers were saying and they chose sticking to the schedule over repackaging the content while taking those suggestions into account.
I am excited and apprehensive about S2, but continuing to hope for the best. If anything, experiments take a little while to get right. I think they deserve at least this second chance to improve on S1 mistakes.
All this talk of “complaining” needs to stop. “Complaining” is when people are mad that their friend got a precursor from a zombie chicken, and they didn’t. “Complaining” is when PvP players are upset that their specialized builds are consistently losing to other builds.
This is what you call “feedback.”
Players are raising legitimate concern over the value of Living Story as compared to permanent playable content, like an expansion. As someone else in this thread said, 2 years after GW1 was released, Factions and Nightfall were both on the shelves. That’s hard, tangible content that you can play as much as you like, even if you weren’t around for the release.
Living Story was a pretty good idea, and I definitely don’t think it should stop, but the amount of time they’re putting into it is alarming. Are they ever going to add significant new content to the game if they’re expending all their effort on these dust-in-the-wind story arcs that rely on gem store promotions for profit? I, and many others, think the future of the game is in jeopardy, unless Anet is willing to take a step back from Living Story and work on an expansion or two.
