Elder Wood Log Price
Thanks. I will sell my wood. I don’t craft. Y’all can have that stuff.
It’s because of the legendaries, certainly. Mike O’brien (don’t have a link, but read it on this forums in a quote) said that each living story update (well not each but some) they will use opportunity to launch new legendary.
Two things jump to my mind: the set is almost done (water weapons will not be updated for sure), and, till the expansion and living world 4, there is a lot chance of another legendary. I think that’s the only reason they pushed 2 legendaries in one patch, cause they dont have living world opportunity for a good while.
Siren’s landing (or new wathever new map name is), also has elder wood log. I already farmed 600 today (could have done more if i wanted). The price already dropped 40 copper (4,5 silver now). I’m confidant with the crazy amount of farmers that it will settle down soon at 3 silver. It might stay a while at 3 silver cause the shining blade is beautifull (lots of ppl will try to make it imo). when most of those ppl did it, price will drop furthre again to about 2 silver (maybe not that low, since ppl will sit more on elder wood for future legendaries after this incident imo).
Now if Anet somehow interrupts with any new demand in next weeks, then it would truly crash the market (not good).
Atm I need craploads of woods for my several legendary projects (including new sword, predator, and nevermore). I still all my wood, cause it’s so interesting atm, value wise. Lots of ppl like to farm easy gold, and this has been since last quarter the best material farm rate/silver income in a while, so with that alone, the high demand will soon be met by high supply, and the high demand will loose the battle of high supply (imo).
No excuse anymore for not giving ‘hide mounts’-option
No thanks to unidentified weapons.
Pretty much any time there’s a new shiny available, the impatient are willing to pay huge premiums to be among the first to flash it around. People spend triple on festival containers day one compared to the last day (2-3 weeks later), even though the contents are the same, just to have the chance of getting lucky sooner.
You can see similar spikes in logs with each new legendary (including a ramp up before new LS, since speculators know that there’ll be a new legendary).
I bought up several thousand logs and refined them into planks, which sold for a net profit of 2-3g/stack of logs. (And I only stopped because I was already late for an appointment.) Mithril also spiked in price, but it wasn’t as noticeable because it went from dirt cheap to cheap. And silver (required for xunlai ingots) went from vendor price to dirt cheap.
This time it was particularly painful because two legendary recipes dropped on the same day.
In short, this isn’t inflation; this is impatience. Wait a week or four and prices will be close to where they were before.
Quick google searches show the Shining Blade legendary takes up 18 THOUSAND elder wood logs.
Why on earth does a SWORD take so much WOOD?!

Maybe it’s a wooden training sword!
I too was perplexed when I wanted to buy elder wood for my daily ectoplasm refinement. I have to stop doing that now, my stash is big enough anyway.
Apparently, crafting that new sword requires one to chop down several forests, or pay people to do it. I don’t think that is a smart way to sink money from the economy. I feel the same about other quest parts. I had to craft 250 pistols for HOPE. They could just have said “pay X gold to proceed”. Crafting those pistols was not a puzzle, not a scavenger hunt, didn’t require any skill (your huntsman craft level is checked at other points already), it was just a money/resource sink and felt like just handing over the money.
The sword cost exactly the same amount of wood as the mace, Eureka. Also less than the hammer costs.
What made this episode’s impact so much stronger, I think, is two things
- Two legendaries launched, not one.
- At least one more popular than the earlier ones.
Fortunately the prices are slowly reverting back to normal. It’s pretty important to mention that the new map provides the same if not more elder wood than malchor’s leap/cursed shore in terms of nodes which really helps.
2 leggies released maybe?

The fact that another legendary requires so much wood doesn’t answer the question of why a SWORD would take wood at all. At least a mace has a wooden haft in GW2 crafting, a sword has zero functional wood in any crafting. Maybe a bit of decorative wood on the grip. We don’t even use scabbards…
Very strange for Anet to just randomly require materials – we go from intricate story at the beginning of HoT legendaries to “no reason why we require things” at the end. It’s like “quick, we have to get these legendaries done – just throw these things in there”. Or “just use the same basic recipe as a completely different weapon”.

Ah, so it wasn’t a question; it was a complaint.
Well, I can agree with that. However, all the gen 2.5 leges follow a very formulaic system that really makes minimal difference between the weapons, and the wood/metal requirements are entirely based on the 2hand/1hand/Offhand categorization. It does make it a lot easier to overview what you need for them.
Guess what happens when the new greatsword comes out.
The new legendaries all need upwards of 20k elder wood and mithril, and similar numbers of the other t5 mats. Be assured that this is 100% intentional. All of those mats flood the market at low value because they’re the most common mat drops at lvl 80. Even after the spike mithril is still cheap. Putting (admittedly absurd) mat requirements on the legendaries is a relatively easy way for Anet to boost the demand for otherwise worthless mats and keep them relevant in the economy.
Can’t say I’m all that fond of it either; I could have my Shining Blade tonight if I didn’t need a couple truckloads of wood and mithril still. But I totally understand why they did it.
Now, if only the next legendaries would consume minor runes, sigils, passion fruit, and spinal blade shards.
They include those items to maintain the high crafting costs typical of legendary weapons. The fact that the cost relies heavily on T5 ore/wood is great for players as it’s easily farmable and players amass large quantities depending on how much they play the game on PvE expansion+ maps.
Some may argue about the elder wood prices but the same would have happened to mithril if the recipes had been adjusted based on weapon type. Hammer and sword are both metal based so mithril prices would have gone up considerably.
I’ll also point out that the weapons themselves don’t use wood directly. It’s the shards which do. So a better argument would be why does each legendary weapon require 290 shards.

If you want realism in recipes you should focus on how much leather is required for armor of all weights, including metal and cloth armor. its pretty kitten ridiculous

Recipes started out more realistic. You are correct about leather but I’m not talking about it because this thread is about wood
