I found it quite the opposite. I did this within the hour that the patch was up (like I always do when I’m able) and had no guides. It took a bit of observation of my surroundings, however I figured it out without burning too many brain cells.

The mechanism is really simple once you figure it out…you don’t even have to attack the boss. The previous two fight perfectly sets you up for this one…

So no, this boss is not frustrating at all.

I, too, feel this battle was clever, and not quite as annoying as all the previous chapter end bosses. The mechanics for the fight were introduced throughout the chapter, including how to beat the sub bosses just before the mechanics were introduced. Now, I personally disliked the second boss battle, but that might’ve been because I was a ranger using a bow primarily.

In every other boss battle, there might’ve been specific mechanics for the fight, but they frequently bugged out or were difficult in other ways. The battle with Aerin, for instance, was highly aspect related, but due to the time out, lag could be an issue. The mordrem battle by Fort Salma bugged out if you died, since Marjory and Kasmeer went back inside the fort. The battle in Duke Barradin’s tomb was long, and the Ascalonian healers could easily reset the battle. The Shadow of the Dragon was also long and difficult, involving lots of dodging, but at least that fight was based off previous battles. This battle, at least, was more puzzle-based, and could be brute-forced if need be.

The boss is really quite simple. I’m all for this type of fighting too…

However.. what is frustrating is when this keeps happening.. The vortex spawns inside the wall. He only spawns ONE at a time. While in the wall it can not be killed. I can’t get the fragility on to it and it constantly heals. While attempting to get the fragility on to it, the boss will get close to/in the wall and will fully heal as well.
There is no way to reset this. Only thing you can do is reset the instance. VERY frustrating when you have to redo a very long instance.

Otherwise it is great. Just wish this would stop happening to me.

I don’t see why people would have any trouble with this boss. The entire dungeon explains all of the mechanics to the player step by step. And then the final boss simply combines all of the mechanics that you have learned up to that point. I got it on my first attempt. Unless the boss some how bugged out, I don’t see what is so difficult about it.

Each miniboss in the dungeon is there to teach you a part of the mechanic of the final boss fight: Facet of Strength teaches you the tells to his melee attacks (even though he never actually uses that pull), Facet of Light teaches you how to get into the colored light pillars, and Facet of Darkness teaches you how to destroy the vortex (and hurt the boss). The only really difficult thing about the last boss is the vortex are sometimes hard to spot when they spawn, which leaves you running around like a headless chicken for a few seconds.

How did you manage to beat the first three minibosses without recognizing their mechanics in the last boss?

The only problem I had with this fight was that 75% of the time the bubbles that make you fragile that you transfer to the Vortex Crystals spawned in the middle of those AoEs that one-shot you. As a result this fight took a helluva lot longer to do than it should have.

Other than that, it wasn’t too tough.

The fight wasn’t hard when I figured out what to do, but I still found it annoying and long, due to how buffs tended to wear off while waiting for the nexuses to absorb them, or having an AOE tag me while standing in a nexus, waiting for it to absorb fragility.

Kudos to Anet for trying to try a unique experience, but this felt less like a fight and more like a puzzle you had to do 20 times in a row.

My first attempt I wasn’t moving around enough so I ended up with multiple death circles in one area and Marjory stuck in the middle. I don’t know if it finally bugged out but none of the circles were going away so I quit. Looking back I realized the boss had two phases – one where you get the fragile and just go take out the vortex and the other where you kill the Summoned Facet for the light color aura and then get the fragility to be able to take out the vortex. If the vortex ends up in the middle of a death ring, just keep moving around well away from it and wait it out until the ring fades, get another fragility buff if needed and then take it out.

On my second attempt and I kept running in very large circles around the room which kept the death circles spread way out and the fight went very quickly to a successful conclusion. I did try to stay away from the walls and keep the boss either in or around the outer edge of the center bit.

I do think the progression of the boss fights was brilliant in teaching the mechanics: The first boss (Facet of Strength) you attack directly, the next (Facet of Light) you need to kill the small Summoned Facets to get the color buff in order to damage the boss, the third boss (Facet of Darkness) is totally an indirect attack where you kill the vortexes after transferring the fragility to them. The last boss (Malevolent Memory) is a great combination though where I think some get confused, and I did on my first attempt, was to also try to damage the boss via direct attack since going through the progression of bosses you might assume the last would be a combination of all, which it really wasn’t.

Later I went back got the achieves by doing it with a group and saw others obviously thinking the same as I initially had, where they tried direct attacks as well as running through the fragility etc. to get to the boss.

I am also glad this wasn’t spoon fed to us. I really enjoyed the sense of exploration in figuring it out. This was a really well done event.

This was my primary complaint (once I read what the mechanics where), this issue was the only thing that caused frustration. I could sometimes dodge through the death circle and pickup the Fragility, but most of the time it was death and running back in.

I did attempt the whole thing without reading, and was VERY frustrated by the end and vowed never to do it again, but then I read you needed the achievements to get the luminous skin so I had to do some research. Still need to get the Aspect of Strength achievement as the stupid thing pulled me as I stepped into the area.

The Fragility circles last quite a while, and they are what cause the insta-gib, the actual attacks he spits out are easy to dodge, side strafe, and just walk away from, and if you dont have Fragility, it won’t kill you in one hit either.

People just tend to be very impatient, wait for the right moment to grab the boon instead of recklessly running into it the moment you see it.

During the last boss fight, I was getting frustrated, but he explained to me what we had to do. Once he did that, we were able to easily defeat the boss.

I played it again solo, later on, and it was trivial, with the mechanics already in mind.

I usually attempt something approx 10-15 times, with various and alternate starts before I deem it ‘not fun’. At most it did get tedious and annoying the longer the fight played out, but if you could keep up and learn the mechanic it wasn’t at all difficult.

And as mentioned, the first few fights prep you for what you had to do for the final.

The only part I found annoying was when the vortex spawned in the attunement circles and you’re having to grab the fragile buff when fighting the mini golems, but kiting fixes that problem. Overall it was a different and interesting thought out fight mechanisim, it does take longer to do sometimes.

I found it to be just fine. Build yourself defensive if you have to and take all ports/invulns/blocks you can. What’s her face will try to rez you if you go down. I mean you could maybe argue it’s one or two bubble sequences too long as it’s just repeating the same thing between two phases, but it’s really not that bad. Remember the original Eye of Zhatian fight from personal story when the game launched? Now that was annoyingly/unnecessarily long (and crazy easy now). Be patient, and just run away if you need to, or not pick up a bubble in a bad spot, etc.

First time which was a failure, I thought this was too long. I really thought last boss fight was bugged and was truly thinking of not even trying again. My second time, soloing, and figuring the mechanics out it was much shorter and I actually started to enjoy this.

Later I did it again for the achieves with one group and ended up leaving by second boss because of one who wasn’t listening to others and got two of the four killed early on because that person surged ahead without letting the ones who didn’t know what to expect walk into insta deaths. That person also would not listen to those of us who had completed the event asking to wait to make sure everyone knew what to do before proceeding to each section.

Next group I found we worked together to the end, learned as we went and I got my achieves, they got their events and everyone enjoyed it. I took hubby in after that to help him and we had a lot of fun doing the whole thing. He enjoyed it first time round and we did it even quicker the second time for his achieves.

Learning the mechanics was really not that hard. I do think I bugged on my first attempt and I know others have experienced bugs as well which does add to the frustration.

Usually there is a good sized group outside the instance so if you are having difficulties either do the LFG or post in chat and let folk know where you are having difficulties finishing. Usually someone will help you finish the event. There were a lot of really nice folk helping people complete this event.

First attempt at this boss I knew what to do due to the mechanics of the previous 2 bosses however near the very beginning of the fight no more than 1 crystal thing spawned and there was no way to kill him. The small golems continued to spawn but it was pointless cause there was nothing to run to. It seems this is a fairly common bug and am glad I’m not the only one who experienced it. On my 2nd attempt it worked fine, although the spawn times were a bit long for the crystal thingies.

Not a fight that’s too difficult. The problem I had the first time I fought him was that he kept throwing the fragile bubbles on top of the AoEs resulting in an insta-gib. Keep moving around the triangle, he throws the bubbles often and throws the AoEs occasionally too. Again, standing still makes the fight near impossible.

The worst fight for me, first time through with my mesmer, was the facet of light. By now I am so conditioned to avoid circles that I panic if I see the Olympics symbol — I can’t dodge all that! And the pretty lights just kept knocking me around, often into the circles of insta-death. Eventually got it. Eventually.

I also had trouble figuring out how to get past the first crystal doodad, because I didn’t see the translucent floating fragile donut thingee along the way (I thought I was running through a dangerous area and was tickled that I so deftly managed to avoid being blown up) and didn’t know the fragile donut even existed until I tabbed out and went googling for clues.

The facet of darkness was shockingly easy. The end boss took the last of my mesmer’s armor, and I stubbornly kept making the mistake of getting the color shield before touching the fragile donut, but I eventually got through that, too.

Took hours getting through the whole thing. Did I mention I was playing my mesmer? Shatter build…

Did it again last night on my NPE ele (grumble no achievements grumble) and while I didn’t have a stop watch handy, I’m sure it probably took less than a half hour. Because, #1: handy damage, and #2:

NPE Ele: I know this!
Kasmeer: And knowing is half the bottle!
Marjory: Battle, honey.
Kasmeer: Combat cutie.
NPE Ele: …

I disliked this fight. It was irrelevant what class you were, what build you used and what skills you took. It was a pure puzzle to kill a boss. The first boss was better. It actually had dps phases where you could actually use your class to damage the boss.

The mechanics were nice. But i think the last couple of bosses were far too puzzle orientated. I would change them to instead of just doing a certain amount of damage each time you destroy a vortex it would allow you a few seconds to dps the boss. Then it would actually feel like build and class mattered.
