Excess Energy
I found one shard which was way up higher than the others, try gliding up a bit more and then circle around..
Pretty sure I already got that one, but I need to go through the instance again for another achievement anyway.
I spent 45 minutes flying around looking for the last one too. And it was right with the rest, just up higher. Didn’t I feel like a dummy when I found it…
If you have trouble with this achievement, try doing the mission with multiple people – it seems that to get the achievement, a TOTAL of 12 motes have to be collected by ALL people in the instance together. I was still seeing 2 more motes, not to mention the ones that would have been far away from me, when we all (at the same time) got the achievement notice
How could you even have any trouble with this achievement?
It literally took me 5 minutes or less just flying around in a circle to get them.

It literally isn’t the same for everyone. Different graphic settings, different quality monitors and GPU, different resolution, different abilities to distinguish bright objects on a bright background.
Mind you, I don’t support the OP’s suggestion — I don’t think it’s worth ANet’s time since you can do the chieve with others and it’s a lot of work for a one-time activity. Still, the criticism is valid: lots of people have trouble seeing the orbs (including me).
I did manage to get the achievement the second time around, but for future achievements like this, they really shouldn’t have tiny bright objects in a massive bright room or tiny dark objects in a massive dark room.
Hidden behind objects is one thing. Being able to stare right at what you’re trying to collect and still not see it is another.
Glad you were able to finish
Thanks for letting us know.
I was stuck for a while at 11/12. At one point I wanted to get closer to the bottom and miss-judged my free-fall descent and splatted. Retry from check point and there it was right in front of me where I re-spawned. Might be worth a try to do the same if you just can’t find it.
I had the same issue, i was stuck at 11/12. I found that lowering the graphics setting to the minimum helps a lot to better see in the ash-storm. Got the last one in no-time afterwards. Hope this helps!
Seconding a request for more graphical contrast in scavanger hunts. I did find them without getting frustrating, but it did give me a bit of an eyestrain-headache to stare so hard at the very bright magma chamber in search of tiny, even brighter blobs.
Can it be done cumulatively? I’m at 10/12, I gave up after 10-15 minutes of circling at various levels didn’t get me the last two. I’m hoping that when I do the final instance on my second LS alt I can just tag two more orbs.

Try this, it has a map which indicates the orbs’ positions — you just have to check on different heights:

You don’t have to get them all in one go, but you do have to grab each one. For example, if you needed to find A-G to complete the achievement, but you couldn’t find B on your first try, your next try will complete the achievement so long as you find B, regardless of if you grab A, C, D, E, F, and G on the second run.
Dulfy notes that sometimes the instance bugs and you can only get 10/12.
I got 11/12 and was just about to give up after searching for 20 minutes. However, raising the gamma to 3.50 worked for spotting the 12th, that I know I must’ve flown past a few times.
