My recollection of the consensus was: no one loved any of the choices (and that it could have been even worse). Regardless, my preference is that in the future, they ask for suggestions first, cull them down to a list of three they like, and let us vote on those.
I can’t explain it, but it certainly was the least horrible of the choices we got to vote for. They at least could have at least removed the apostrophe.

When Rytlock heard “Dragon’s Watch” I expected him to rip off his blindfold and walk out. But he liked it. I think he’s going soft.
It was to make GW2 merchandise:
Men’s and women’s personal time pieces, including custom faces for Apple’s iwatch.
Rumor starts now!
I can’t explain it, but it certainly was the least horrible of the choices we got to vote for. They at least could have at least removed the apostrophe.
For me it was the worst choice. Unbroken sounded better, if only marginally. I swear if I ever write a book with a character in GW2, whenever it reaches this point, they WILL crack a joke on that name.
“Dragon’s Watch? What kind of stupid name is that!?”
“…the former Commander of the Pact came up with the name.”
“Good thing we don’t rely on the Commander outside of combat.”
PvE Main – Zar Poisonclaw – Daredevil
WvW Main – Ghost Mistcaller – Herald
I have this persistent mental image of ED with pocket watch dangling from it’s… paw (?)… screaming “time to die, time to die!”

I think that people are not understanding what is meant by “watch” – keeping watch means to be on-guard. For instance in some action movies when people are going to sleep or are hiding out somewhere they often talk about who will take the “first watch”. They also keep watch in the military.
So I take the name as meaning that we are keeping the “Dragon’s Watch” – we are on-guard against the Dragons.
it doesn’t makes any sense though, because they are not guarding against the Dragon,
they are more like stopping them, I mean the commander and the team are not like staying in one place and guarding against the Dragons, they more like going out there, find information to fight the dragon.
so the name doesnt really make any sense to me.
Curious: what were the other names? Does anyone know them offhand?
Server: Dragonbrand
Guild: Knights of Ares [ARES]
The Unbroken, and, um, Eternity’s something or other.

A ‘watcher’ doesn’t necessarily stay in one place. Watchers go on patrol and in some cases have their own espionage teams. (e.g. Jon Snow knows nothing, but as a member of Night’s Watch, he infiltrated the wildings.)
Don’t get me wrong: I hate the name only slightly less than the other two options. My concern isn’t with the word ‘watch’.
FYI from the wiki’s article on Dragon’s Watch
- …players…were asked to vote for one of three potential names [, including] Eternity’s Guard and The Unbroken.
- Separate polls were run for different languages; for example, the French community chose the name Gardiens de l’Éternité (Eternity’s Guard).
I’ve looked at the French, German, and Spanish wikis and can’t find any additional information about their choices (presumably translations of the English versions).
It was the least worst name.
Dragon Watch is cheesy and clichéd, but at least it makes sense.
We are after all a group that guards Tyria from Elder Dragons, by killing them.
I can see the recruitment pamflets already.
Join Dragon’s Watch!
Travel to exotic distant lands; meet exciting, unusual creatures – And kill them!

If you are on watch and an attacker comes, you don’t just stand there and watch it. You fight it. It makes perfect sense.
“Dragons gather, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my death. I shall take no wife, hold no lands, father no children. I shall wear no crowns and win no glory. I shall live and die at my post. I am the sword in the darkness. I am the watcher of the dragons. I am the shield that guards the realms of Tyria. I pledge my life and honor to the Dragon Watch, for this dragon and all the dragons to come.”
They need to rethink their community interaction in my opinion.
The WvW team does a good thing.
In PvE, all “choices” we had so far, were pretty insignificant. At least after Kiel vs Evon
When LA has been rebuild, they hyped it up a lot. Then we got a “choice”, which was just a name for a place. We couldn’t pitch anything in, we were locked in four names, for something we don’t really know about.
For DE2.0 we got three names, without much background and appearently GoT knock offs.
I mean, seriously? We got WvW, which let’s us take part at the creation of the content and then we got PvE, which is just “naming stuff”.
How about we got asked what kind of direction LA’s design should have gone?
Provide a name and background for the new guild (like, why it should be named this), something that certainly did’t happened here.
I expected at least the game explaining why they used that name. At least spit baling between the members, trying to explain why they are the unbroken or the eternal guard
Anything…
I wish we had more interaction there, instead of the patronizing choices we get to do at the moment.
Kiel vs Evon was a great start. How come we devolved into handholding and utterly uninteresting choices?
Sigh. Dragon’s Watch is cliche to the point of being forgettable.
After LS S2, I mentally called them Lion’s Dawn. I think I’ll just keep doing that.
Even if I don’t really like the name, guys we are ACTUALLY guarding a Dragon.
Remember the egg?

“How about Guildy McGuildface?”

Sure, people would submit troll names, which is why ANet would have to cull the list down (as I said in the post you quoted).
(Although, to be honest, if given the choice between “Guild McGuildface” and “Dragon’s Watch,” I’d have to think about it.)

That’s OP’s point though. “Dragon’s” Watch implies that we are on the watch of the dragon. That’s what the possessive " ‘s " after “Dragon” means. “Dragon Watch” on the other hand would mean that we’re on the watch for dragons. One means that we’re on the dragon’s side, the other that we’re against the dragons.
So I’m with OP on this one.
Apparently a dragon owns the new guild. It possesses us. We belong to it. We are its servants. Its tools.
Villain play option incoming?
We were given 3 fairly poor choices, which i think someone pointed out a bizarre similarity to some names in Game of Thrones.
None of the 3 were suitable for our Guild at all. They didn’t fit – Dragon’s Watch was just the better of the 3 (imo). We should have carried the legacy on of Destiny’s Edge. It fitted so much better in terms of lore in terms of the established legend of the guild, in terms of Guild renewing themselves with new recruits and in terms of a fitting tribute to those who had fallen.
In my opinion, it should never have been changed – that was a needless and poor story decision. Which is a shame, because the quality otherwise of LS3 ep1 was excellent.
I still don’t understand those names. So many better names to choose, and they stuck with those. They really should have asked the playerbase for names for the guild.

I didn’t read that as the OP’s point: “the commander and the team are not like staying in one place and guarding against the Dragons, they more like going out there, find information to fight the dragon”.
But I will admit that the possessive doesn’t seem correct. I agree that “Dragon Watch” would be better – “The Dragon Watch” better still IMO.
I think I’ll stick with Pocket Watch – makes (kind of) sense for Taimi at least…
Oh, Dragon’s Watch. Not Dragon Swatch. Gotcha.
It was the best of that crappy list of options they gave us. Here, eat this crap sandwich, rancid burger or spoiled cheese. Thanks for letting us pick!
Yeah, its an exaggeration, but the cliche heavy writing style (Taimi IS Wesley Crusher) permeates the LS so far.
When I first heard it ingame, I immediately though of OVERWATCH.
I was like; ’’ .... ’’
Now we know Rytlock’s taste in names.
“FATES RAZOR!”
“Naaaw Fate’s Razor sounds stupid.”
“Dragons watch!”
“Babysitters it is!”
Dragon’s watch is correctly possessive… we are guarding glints egg, which is in fact….. wait for it…. A Dragon! the name fits perfectly for what we are doing. Yes we are going after other dragons, but our primary responsibility is to infact guard that egg.
The night’s watch also didn’t defend the night.
Instead they defend during the night.
SO why can’t Dragon’s Watch be the guild that defends during the dragons rise (and fall).
Ingame Name: Guardian Erik
Dragon’s watch is correctly possessive… we are guarding glints egg, which is in fact….. wait for it…. A Dragon! the name fits perfectly for what we are doing. Yes we are going after other dragons, but our primary responsibility is to infact guard that egg.
Since when?
We were asked to take care of the egg and deliver it to it’s proper place.
A task that was given to us and we accepted because it served our cause.
Now we left it with the people who are actually supposed to guard it.
If anyone in “our group” is determined to watch it, it would be Caithe.
Otherwise, thanks to no further information given, aside from: It’s somehow important , our character has no real obligation to be the guardian of Glints offspring.
In fact, he was never enlisted to that task.
We got the Brotherhood of the Dragon along with Odgen, the Zephirites and nowadays the people of Tarir for that.
We are off, doing whatever the world throws at us at the moment. If I remember it is a self proclaimed god and some firey firey dragon.

I disagree – that is not the primary purpose of the guild.
Yea, we never get a sense that our primary purpose is watching the egg. Tarir is all set up for that—we made sure the baby is well tended.
Honestly, if our choices had included “Poohbah & Friends,” I would have gone with that over even “Dragonswatch”. I don’t really think the possessive is the issue here.
I have trouble understanding why ANet didn’t invite us to offer suggestions, then pick their three or five favorites, and have us vote on that. We’d be invested in the decision instead of feeling that it was a choice between the lesser of evils.
Anyhow, as a practical matter, it’s moot: the voice actors have gone home for the season and the name is here to stay.
Hahaha, I would totally have picked Poohbah & Friends.

since it became our mission to take the egg to begin with. yes it rests in tarir under exalted care, but we would be kidding ourselves if you think that we wont have to defend that egg in upcomming stories/missions, or play an intrigal part in its hatching and defense during its vulnerable times. The Devs know the outcome of the story already, and have likely selected names that were fitting for it in specific directions they want to go. but anyway….. there is a connection, whether you personally agree with it or not isnt going to change it.
To Djinn: It most certainly is the primary focus, as i have stated above, we will be tasked with protecting it as it grows and hatches… all of ls2 was about that egg, and i will be surprised if we dont end up doing exactly that.

You are aware that you are contradicting yourself, aren’t you?
It is a potential focus, not the or primary focus of the new guild.
The guild at this point has no clear goal, but rather it’s individual members have their own agendas (Braham wants Jormag, Rytlock follows the voices in his head, Taimi wants Primordus, etc..).
The only one, who actually cares about the egg at the moment is Taimi (and Caithe, but she isn’t part of the guild) and only because she wants to study it. Everyone else is god knows where doing their own private stuff.
The common goal however, is the fight against the danger of the elder dragons .
A goal which can easily shifts, if we uncover the true nature of the elder dragons, which has allready been hinted upon several times.
We are not the protectors of the egg, however we will protect it if it does become neccessary (which will be the case at some point, obviously, but that is something for the future).
So far we were only the one, who took over the protecting part for a bit, because the Zephirites went down.
The nature of the egg and it’s purpose has never been really told to our character. We were never flat out told what the endgame of all involved factions is. Neither the exalted, nor Odgen has told us anything about the real plan of Glint and the Forgotten.
The egg is on the agenda, but is still too much of a mystery, to be a primary goal.
Your theory is allready debunked anyway, as the other name choices don’t have the dragon emphasis, are being used in other languages because they won the choice there and are more or less confirmed to be inspired by Game of Thrones.
So yes. Your szenario might come true. That we will be involved in it’s protection, or that the other names are hints towards future storylines. It would be like calling yourself dragonslayer before you even met a dragon in the first place. A big joke or selffullfilling prophecy (which we allready had with the flameseekers, so i guess that ship is sailed)
Hahaha, I would totally have picked Poohbah & Friends.
I would love it even more if it were: Super Happy Go Time Ninja Poohbah & Friends.
The Unbroken and Eternity’s Guard were the other options. They all sound dumb to me. Eternity’s Guard would fit some time-traveling Dr. Who wannabes, and The Unbroken… well, I’d rather be unbroken than broken, but it doesn’t have much to do with anything, does it?
Explain dragon’s watch:

Well, blind Zojja, comatose Logan, Eir pushing up the vinewraths (daisies sound so lame for a cool norn), I think we should be called the Broken Beyond Repair

The Unbroken would have been a better fit.
The group has dealt with loss of loved ones and comrades in arms, defeat, the death of mentors and heroes, etc.
yet they remain…standing stalwart and fighting to protect Tyria…
The Unbroken.
I can because I want to
I want to because you said I couldn’t
The night’s watch also didn’t defend the night.

A better explanation than any I’d considered before.
I think my big issue with DW was that it felt so passive and didn’t have any punch to it.

Has anyone here forgotten that there is a region in Blazeridge Steppes called “Dragon Watch”? I was just reminded of it the other day when I ran in there on another toon.
Guild: Moonlit Renegades (Moon)
Highest-Level Toon: Markus Emmerich, 80 Human Scrapper
So GoT has the “nights watch” and that is actually pretty cool. Helps they have an awesome ice wall, wear all black and have cool capes, and vows.
That being said I still don’t know why we just can’t name our fort ourselves, or our guild. Fort Trinity, Dragon’s Watch, has no real meaning to me.
Now something I can name like ragnorak, the twin towers, shadowknights, dark flames, that may mean something to me.
