So I really hate this achievement.

The spirit attacks cannot be dodged and you cannot kill the Self Doubt quickly enough before the spirits debuffs and buffs make it impossible. So, the achievement is essentially made for a minion or perhaps heavy condi builds. GW2 lack something as basic and convenient as build templates, and that some profeesions have no minions and/or crappy condition builds that people don’t normally use. So regular or condi ranger, condi or minion master necro, or turret engineer (maybe mesmer?) are really the most clearly advantaged if not the only ways to get this achievement.

I’ve completed most of the achievements for Living Worlds season 1, and every achievement from Living World seasons 2 and 3 to date and I can only think of a few achievements that so blatantly favored certain classes. And I hated those too. Encounter designs that heavily favor certain classes and builds over player skill are not good encounters. This achievement encounter is just a step backwards for them.

Make sure not to damage him while his breakbar is not broken or else the damage reduction he gets stacks up.

If you want to do easy mode, run a warrior through with headbutt and wildblow. Break bluebar ->do damage -> break bluebar again -> do damage -> finish.

Unlike what people think, minions are not so advantageous. He will focus them, they don’t do so much burst as to be of enough value, the fight is all about having crowd controll and then enough burst to finish it before the debuff stacks up to high.

Minion builds dont work, since their hits also stack resistance. Burst condi’s, during the broken breakbar and just run around inbetween

I run a condition Chronomancer in full Trailblazer and my health never got below 75%. So, yes I think you are right, a condition build makes this achievement much easier.

Nearly any build with good burst or intense conditions will work. The key is in Cyninja’s post: don’t hit your doppleganger unless they are stunned — each hit adds 5% resistance, so just 20 hits makes your nemesis invulnerable.

Break → burst → wait, wait, wait → break → burst → wait.

The advantage of condition builds is that they do some damage through the shield (the disadvantage is you get hurt by conditions, too).

If you use a ranger pet management is a must, but it can really help in the fight. For me I was on a staff ranger using condi armor and healing trinkets. I had the pink moa and lightning wyvern to help with breaking the bar. Make sure to switch pets to keep them alive. Utility was signet of nature, and spike trap, fire trap, and entangle. It took forever but it is possible.

For ppl really desperate to finish this → take mesmer with GS and healing signet, summon two clones and one phantasm, shatter once you have 25 stacks, let the one phantasm do all the work. Not exactly fun way to do it admittedly, but it works. Remember to stay at max range so doppelganger’s bouncing blade doesnt kill your illusions.

Managed to do this with condi reaper, and some strong condi food.
The general idea is.. leak his breakbar, until you’re certain it’s gonna break in like 2 seconds.
Then place the two big condi-fields, and just wait, rinse and repeat, survive inbetween, I didn’t even use any basic attacks. Alternate with the reapers flash-frost and fear

Condi builds are perfect for this. However, I did manage to get it on my ranger after about 15 minutes of pet swapping and waiting on CDs to break the bar.

Vipers + Poison/Bleed/Burn will make it an easy run.

I had huge issue with this until I mega-cheesed it on my heal/tank guard. I just specced it for retal + dodge heal, facing against the thing and basically tabbed out. The guard one spawns with GS and pathetic dmg, so it just spun on my ass and killed itself really quickly with no need to CC or anything.

I just tried for Fearless on my Reaper. Bad idea. The doppelganger siphoned up to full health while I kited it as I built my 25 stacks. Then I did get the Alacrity but it did NOT clear the 25 stacks so my only recourse was to use the ghosts lest I run around in circles forever. I wasn’t in any danger, but neither was my doppelganger.

Was it a bug? Should the 25 stacks have vanished while I had Alacrity?

They don’t vanish. You just get like 4 seconds of alacrity which reduces the cooldowns somewhat when it’s active.

I see. Well, that’s not terribly helpful then — 4 or 5 seconds off of 2 minutes is on the useless side. I’ll have to pick an alt that doesn’t give the doppelganger much to work with.

Or just not get that achieve. There are others to work with for the meta. But now that I’m capped on dailies, I find myself greedy for AP

Well alacrity itself removes more time off the cooldown than that. I think someone mentioned that it keeps the boss’ buff stack at 1 or something too which may be why people go for it that way.

I probably was Doing It Wrong — but I swear that I was still on a huge cooldown once at 25 stacks, just had the cooldown timers colored green to show they had sped up. I don’t know what the boss’ buff was doing, since it couldn’t hurt me at any point.

Well, come to think of it, my 1 skill did turn into a 4 second cooldown and I think it was longer sans Alacrity. Still not enough to hurt the boss in the short time available during Alacrity (remember, that darn boss was siphoning off me like a maniac, so up its health went in between my attacks). I have every profession available so I’ll see what’s most recommended, if I bother with the attempt again.

Or if anyone has a Reaper traits/weapon setup they’d recommend for this specific fight, I can easily enough swap out for the fight. I’m running Soul Reaping 321, Death Magic 133, Reaper 112, with GS/Staff, bone minion, Rise!, You are all Weaklings!, Nothing Can Save You!, and Chilled to the Bone! Gear is mostly exotic, a mixture of condi stats.

Did the fight on my reaper, the life drain let me realise very soon I’d rather bump this guys head with my warrior. I also had pets out which as someone mentioned earlier means he stacks up his damage resistance during the time his defiance bar is up.

Best recommendation would be a petless build with high breakbar damage though the life drain will make things more complicated.

I didn’t even attempt Fearless on my mesmer. She was using spirits left and right.

As staff Tempest, I dumped air specialization and used water instead, so on water attunement you get a strong health regeneration. That was enough healing to have the time to bring Self Doubt down to about 20%, then kite under water attunement and wait for everything to reload until I got the 25 stacks of the debuff. Finishing the last 20% at this stage was the easiest part of the fight. I think I never went under 75% life and finished the fight with almost 100% life.

My first run simply as full berserk with the usual staff meta build, as I play usually, didn’t work out. Even with the most careful usage of cc skills – not enough healing/dodge in the long run. Using water specialization was the changer.

It seems to be most vulnerable to retaliation…I cheesed it on my mesmer using the very dull and lengthy process described above—it can’t damage above the ability of the signet to heal you. But I had some retaliation on and that sped things up a bit. It doesn’t seem to have any reduction against retaliation.

Having a Berserker with a condi build (Sinister) is probably what helped me get it, as well as persistent use of CC skills.

LOL I was wondering what that achievement was. I just fought it the way I normally fight anything. Seemed to kitten. Not sure why you need to only do damage when the bar is broken though? I did damage the whole time and got the achievement. And I was doing it on my DH.

It resists most of the damage if the bar isn’t broken because it gains stacks of a buff. You likely beat it because of retaliation being your primary source of damage.

This feels borderline impossible to achieve with a physical Revenant build. Staff is great for breaking the bar of course, but it is somewhat terrible for dealing any follow-up damage, plus it builds 5 stacks of damage resistance right away which is not ideal. Swapping over to Sword for damage dealing purposes after the stun can also only be done once in a blue moon when the frustrating condition that keeps increasing the cooldowns kicks in; so you can’t just swap back and forth to deal proper damage between stuns, plus a big part of physical Revenant DPS comes from the auto-attack which is also put on a cooldown. Mace is also kinda out of the question on a physical build. And while Hammer is good, it’s not ideal for this fight. The cooldowns become insane at 25 stacks, and the Alacrity buff it then applies doesn’t remotely help reducing the cooldowns enough to have skills available again, so you run around at a snails pace, trying to evade some attacks without being able to do anything at all. Breaking the bar only leaves a very small window to deal any sort of physical damage for that matter, making me feel as if this was designed purely for condition builds that can keep ticking after they’ve been applied. Why, ArenaNet?

It certainly doesn’t help that the Self-Doubt is using Sword and you will need to wait for it to have performed its Unrelenting Assault (which lets it evade) before you can break the bar. If you don’t wait for that, you risk wasting a valuable CC. I did that a couple of times before I learned my lesson. Ugh!

Kiting is also somewhat out of the question, mainly due to the higher stacks you get as time goes on, which also slows your movement, but also because the Self-Doubt has the aforementioned Sword weapon, which makes it use Precision Strike, afflicting you with Chilled status frequently, slowing you down, plus increasing your cooldowns..

Sword/Sword is kinda mediocre at breaking the bar, and going with an Axe off hand doesn’t really help much either. Using the Elite of the Dragon or Assassin stances is not really all too effective either, as it “only” does half the bar roughly.

This is honestly a horribly designed challenge that doesn’t seem to have been given proper thought (or testing) making sure that everyone can actually do it. I run a physical DPS build with my Revenant; all Ascended Berserker, Strength Runes, Force and Air Sigils, every slot has an +9 Infusion with +5 Precision — there’s ridiculous amounts of Gold invested in this set, but it feels impossible to use it for this challenge (just like it basically were impossible to use for the previous achievements in this mission, Precision Blade and Hold the Line.. I had to rely on cheesy tactics by exploiting that a certain friendly NPC can’t die and not engaging myself. That is not fun. That feels cheap, because it is; just as cheap as the insane damage increase the later waves had). I am certainly not having fun trying to get this achievement done. I am getting frustrated. Annoyed. I want to punch something, someone. The achievement is making me boil with anger.

Stuff like this makes me regret that I bought the new expansion. I can only imagine similarly terrible challenges that aren’t doable without specific classes and gear throughout the expansion areas. How fun that’ll be.. It makes me question why I returned to the game. I was frustrated on several occasions in the past before I took my rather long hiatus from the game. Why would it ever change. It’s gotten worse.

PS: I got the Self-Doubt to about 20%, a couple times. But the cooldowns at that point were all going to last for over FOUR minutes due to the condition and frequent Chill application, so the Alacrity at 25+ stacks practically doesn’t help at all. The Self-Doubt also deals higher damage and there is absolutely no way to kite it effectively. Being downed followed shortly thereafter. If the auto-attack weren’t put on a cooldown, then this would likely be doable, then I could at least get some proper burst done when stunning the Self-Doubt. But alas, it gets affected.

I did it with a d/d thief. At the start, just stay at the entrance and let the debuffs come in. Once they stack up to 25, they will go back to 1 and you will get an alacrity buff every now and then. Then just go in and use all your skills once on the enemy. After, make some distance and it will only attack you with throwing daggers, wich do almost no dmg. Wait for your skills to recharge and rinse and repeat. Took me like 20-30 minutes.

For me it was impossible with my dps revenant. Tried several tactics with kiting or direct damage, but never got him below some 70%.
