Have to do event to be able to access LS?
Be prepared to be even more annoyed because they do that multiple times.
Learning how to access the tunnels – doing the event – was a part of that episode of the living story. It doesn’t take long to do and you don’t need a group.
If you don’t want to bother, simply hop servers until you find one that’s open.
You spent 4 days trying not to waste 1 minute of your so precious time on a small event that is part of the LS?
Sounds like a tragedy.

I’d like sensible replies, none that state I should go do event to open them because I don’t recall having to do this for any other part of LS.
You have a short memory then, because back in Episode 3 there were a lot of open world events that had to be done for the Living Story. Several in Iron Marches to learn about Mordrem, an event chain in Frostgorge Sound to prove yourself to the Norn, and then the relic collection throughout Ascalon for Rytlock. All of those steps involve doing open world events.
While the Frostgorge event chain from that episode might prove tricky to solo, the single event to open the Skritt tunnels in Silverwastes can be soloed quite easily. It’s an event you need to do in order to obtain Carapace Boots, anyway, so having the game nudge you in that direction is a good thing if you want to complete that armour set.
Let’s not forget events that get you into the leyline hub for Chapters 2-4, where you have to beat the Inquest blocking the entrance to the cave. Or before that, where you have to clear mordrem to get the vine bridge(s) to grow. Or even in Prosperity, after it was destroyed, there are 3 mordrem champions that must be defeated to get into Scarlet’s apartment. The only reason you might not have seen these events – aside from never setting foot in Dry Top – is because any event successfully completed there advances the meta-event, which most players on that map want to achieve.
Meanwhile, in the Silverwastes, having the skritt tunnels open mostly only allows a quick skip over the map, and there is little to no motivation to keep the tunnels open once the players who need the Far Silverwastes have gone there. So for the first time in your story, instead of being carried by other people to the instance start, you have to do the event yourself.
Sorry, but you’ll have to suck it up and spend the 3-5 minutes it takes to clear out Picaroon Scratch, then run to the appropriate tunnel. Far faster than waiting for someone else to do it for you, and you’ll hopefully realize it’s the journey not the destination you’re playing this game for.

There is also another difference between those events and the skritt tunnels. In all those other events the event is near the obstacle. The other difference(possibly not true but I’ve never seen the ley line hub or scarlet’s house being blocked without the corresponding events being up) is that they seem to exist in a binary state. Either the event is up or the path is opened. On the other hand the skritt tunnels have 3 states. They can be open, closed or waiting for the event to clear the bandits. That means extra waiting.

And the tunnel is only closed when the skritt are not in charge. There is both an attack event (killing the bandits) and a defense event (fight off the bandits), but as I mentioned, most people won’t do this unless going to Far Silverwastes. So there isn’t much of a wait period, although admittedly I haven’t checked post defense failure to killing bandits, but the wait time is minimal to go north. Plus, once you do finally get there, most people will waypoint there rather than worry about this event.
So, just kill the bandits, run over to the tunnel, and stop whining about it. I guarantee you will have enough time, even without speed boosters, to get up there.
