I’m not especially fond of Taimi. She’s “too cute” for me.

Destiny’s Edge was heroic, the current group is not with the possible exception of Marjory. It isn’t inspiring to me to be part of this group.

Its a good thing they aren’t Destiny’s Edge then. Unrelated entirely. Taimi is the only one that kinda came outta the blue, maybe Kasmeer too. They are just characters that can be anywhere since the main 5 do Personal Story. When the assault on Modremoth happens, we will see Destiny’s Edge.

I can’t stand almost all of them, maybe except Rox. Especially Marjory and Kasmeer, their romance is IMO terribly forced and their conversations are just cringeworthy. It’s straight from a fanfic written by 15 years old girl.

As someone who loathed the original DE, I don’t mind this group. It is being built from the ground up, so it’s more organic than a group of super heroes (not to be confused with superheroes) that are the best ever because the author told us they’re the best ever.

That said, there’s certainly room for improvement. I could use MUCH less of the lovey-dovey kissy-face crap from Jory and Kasmeer. It’s already consumed Jory. No longer is she the intelligence detective, now she’s just Kasmeer’s sweetie. And Kasmeer has quickly degenerated into a love sick puppy. And now it’s consuming the atmosphere of the story. We’re investigating a heinous act of mass murder, and all the while they’re prattling on like a couple of high school sweethearts. That wasn’t the time and it wasn’t the place for the writers to remind us all that Jory and Kasmeer are in a relationship.

And before anyone tries to discredit my argument by calling me a homophobe sexist, I’d feel exactly the same if the relationship were a heterosexual one. I don’t like the Logan/Jennah melodrama anymore than I like the Jory/Kasmeer melodrama.

Bingo. Fanfic is the word that describes it best. Doesn’t feel anything like Guild Wars.

As much as I agree that their relationship is cringe-worthy, I have to say that it is good writing. Before you put out torches and pitchforks, hear me out.

Relationships go through stages. The number of these can vary depending on whom you ask but everyone has a common consensus that the first is always “puppy love”. During the first 4 to 6 weeks, people whom just start a relationship will act as if it is the best thing that ever happened to the universe! This is also referred to as the “addiction stage” and with good reason. It’s at this time that the brain releases dopamine, which does things that are far too complicated to really get into here. The tl;dr version is that it makes you feel REALLY good and want to do more of what you’re presently doing. Falling in love, drugs, video games, music… and… let’s call the next one “reproduction,” all can cause this chemical to flood the brain. Of course the body has countermeasures to this so you can’t just do the same thing over and over again to get the same effect. You either have to go with something new but related or bigger and better. If you don’t, your interest will just fizzle out.

At this point, relationships move on to the second phase where one or both people in the relationship try to gain some sense of “self” again and this is where most relationships fall apart. The reasons are varied but not important because Marjory and Kasmeer clearly haven’t gotten this far yet. For them it’s only been about a month since we literally staked our claim in Scarlet’s cleavage and their relationship isn’t much older than that. Their sweet nothings and pet names are fewer than before though, as well as small signs of growing tension from considering the other more than themselves. Their relationship is following the predicted course.

Now many of you guys state that how lovey-dovey these two have been is something straight out of a teenaged girl’s fanfic. Yeah, it is. And that is how it should be. Again, the explanation is tl;dr worthy so here’s the short answer. They are thinking more emotionally than logically as new couples tend to do. Teenagers do this as well during puberty because the body naturally processes more thoughts through the parts of the brain that deal with emotions than logic at that time. Scientists don’t know why and my best guess is that the logic part is being “renovated” so the natural shift to the emotional side is basically a temporary detour until things are ready. Regardless of the reason, you can see that they are acting like teenagers because they are thinking like teenagers, which is completely normal, given their situation.

So yeah, these two are acting normally. Feel free to gag about it because that’s a normal reaction too.

I like the biconics more than DE right now for the following reasons :

-DE was really doing well before we meet them, in the book’s story. In the game all we see about them is a broken alliance and constant arguments most of the time. They basically feel whole only in the last dungeon story IMO.

-The biconics are actually useful in combat or at least they feel active. All I remember of DE is that I had to rez them all the time in the various dungeons while I barely saw their actions during the battle.

-They have a mesmer and a necro, the iconic class of GW and my favorite class in GW1.

-Taimi.

I never read the books so DE seemed completely foreign to me when i picked up the game. Some of them would show up for a storyline, storm off and act like petty kittenes. I’ve never seen the appeal.

I read Edge of Destiny after I started playing the game. All the characters are a LOT better in the novels… up to the point where Queen Jenna is introduced. That’s pretty much when they became the characters you see in the game.

Agreed, it is fairly bad writing, quite a step down from Destiny’s Edge.

It does indeed feel forced, not only is the dialogue cringe worthy but your main character comes off as a creepy eavesdropper. All of the b-iconics come across as unlikable.

I wish there was more group conflict between them. Kas/Marjory dont’ care about anyone else but themselves. Rox/Brahamahmam seem to have some sort of underlying attraction with one another (despite how ridiculous it sounds and how that would work) while Taimi just DNGAF.

I wish we had something else to work on with all these characters. We don’t necessarily need to have another strained relationship like we had with all those characters in DE…but how about other stuff like betrayal.

I think Game of Thrones has ruined me. I just can’t get down with the whole perfect set of “good guys” fighting the universal “bad guys”. There’s good and bad in everyone.

At least in the original Destiny’s Edge it sounds like Logan may have betrayed his team and cost someone their life. This creates some realistic, tangible drama around the characters.

This new group is too perfect and not edgy enough. I also agree with the comment that it feels like you are not the hero at all. I’m barely involved except when Margery calls me “boss” every once in a while. For whatever reason, I don’t feel like when they say “boss” or “commander” or whatever that they’re talking about me. I feel like I’m listening to them refer to someone else…? Not sure how to fix it, but I’ve not felt this way in other games.

The original Destiny’s Edge was awful. They were always angry and complaining, and being emo. That’s not good storytelling. This new one is better, but it’s still unforgettable. None of these characters are likeable.

-DE was really doing well before we meet them, in the book’s story. In the game all we see about them is a broken alliance and constant arguments most of the time. They basically feel whole only in the last dungeon story IMO.

That’s present day DE and we aren’t seeing them because the biconics have taken their place (they haven’t – DE only turn up in story mode dungeons after level 20, most of the story takes place with other characters, Living Story occurs with biconics). Honestly I find DE to be interesting as individuals (I feel the same way about the biconics – Rox representing the charr in Flame and Frost is interesting, Rox as part of a group is boring, Marjory as a detective is interesting, Marjory in a relationship is not) and if they return, I hope it’s to follow up interesting individual stories which best represent their roles in the world. I’d like to see Caithe follow up the secret with Scarlet mentioned last year.

-The biconics are actually useful in combat or at least they feel active. All I remember of DE is that I had to rez them all the time in the various dungeons while I barely saw their actions during the battle.

There’s no rule saying other NPCs can’t be useful in combat. It’s a design limitation that only exists because a designer didn’t decide to make an NPC useful. Arguably the biconics are not useful in combat – combat was designed to include them. When Kasmeer portals you across a gap or up a ledge, the devs decided to create a gap or ledge for her to portal you through. There is literally an achievement in the final mission where a hidden aspect crystal allows the player to jump across the gap. Every way they help you is not exclusive to them, and it’s scripted to happen, it’s an obstacle that occurs for them to overcome. Without them, the solution would still exist.

Destiny’s Edge have the fatal flaw that their story in GW2 is part two or a two part story. We are getting the band back together without ever knowing about the band. They act as racial mentors in the personal story, but aside from that many players didn’t care about reconciling them in dungeons because they had little to no in-game context for caring why they mattered as a group.

I think the individual chapters of the Personal Story are better ways to write characters. Instead of a group of five being universally applied to all scenarios, you have new or returning characters that matter to the story being told. This helps the story talk about the Vigil, or the Priory, or the Pact. It roots the story and our experience in the shoes of the people who best represent it, instead of the a travelling cast of sitcom characters.

The writers have done nothing to this point to make them an actual team in anything more than name. It’s Jory and Kasmeer occasionally exchanging pleasantries with Rox and Braham, all the while the team mascot Taimi is just sort of blabbering on about something or another. If the writers wanted to make this group of NPCs feel like an actual team maybe they should pry apart the love birds and mix up the duos on some of these missions.

I say give ’em time. I and others have argued against the pandering to shippers and politically correct pressure groups, but DE Junior is still entertaining. Rox is my personal favorite, she seems to be the most levelheaded of them.

Sorry but a year is quite long enough.

I say scrap all the main characters and start over, this new team fails at accomplishing what was obviously intend by the writers. I see more complaint topics about each of the major characters every month than anything else.

Unfortunately Season 2 is set in stone, voice acting and all. We are no doubt stuck with the poor mans Destinys Edge for the foreseeable future.
