So the achievements for the QJ Living Story are up on GW2 wiki, and I have to say I’m very disappointed in what I see. It looks like more of the same: busy work…filler. Among the achievements are: 4 tiers of visiting balloon towers and 4 tiers of escorting emissaries to hot-air balloons x5 (one set for each of the five playable races).

I made Guild Wars 2 my game of choice because of the time and effort the developers invested to ensure content was deeply satisfying. But with the shift to the Living Story it’s becoming more and more apparent that large quantities of shallower content is going to be the focus going forward. And with no planned expansions, all I have to look forward to is more of the same?

I’m hoping you’re not too far down the “new content every two weeks” path to reconsider your approach. To this point in time the development cycles don’t appear to have given the content development teams enough time to release Living Story content that matches the depth and quality of the that in the game at release. I don’t pretend to speak for everyone, but I personally would much rather have quality over quantity…fewer, more compelling updates over more, less-substantive ones.

I prefer the path they are on.

We’ll still get those huge events that occur. However, we get smaller ones every 2 weeks.

I like it.

Here’s what people thought of GW1 when it first came out: http://tinyurl.com/bntcvyc

Yeah, I really never log on anymore because I got tired of the same boring “Go fetch 100 items, now go press f on 200 different things”. I haven’t played in about 3 months now, except for the Zephyr Sanctum patch. I look on the GW2 website to see what the next patch is, but every single one of them is the same boring event, just with different items and different minigames, which I don’t play anyway. None of them except the Zephyr Sanctum were interesting enough for me to log into, and I even got bored with the Zephyr Sanctum when I logged in for half an hour.

They seriously need to add some variety to these patches, and I’d be willing to wait for months so that they can test their patches for bugs, and actually have a good patch release. Hopefully they’ll take a hint when half of their playerbase leaves the game due to useless redundancy of new content. Anyway, I’ll hope and check the website every few weeks to see if anything new is coming.

I’m with you. There isn’t a single event that interests me that they have put out in these filler events. On the upside, I don’t feel like I have missed out on anything by not doing them. So since there are a lot of people that do enjoy them I’m not looking to see them removed because that would be incredibly self serving.

I would love to see something else besides running races etc.

Same here, although it seems it will be more combat oriented this time. But I would rather wait 3 months for some OPEN WORLD ZONE with HARD and REWARDING events. Southsun cove is “HARD” 100x HP SCALE but was it rewarding? Not really.

They totally have to remake their loot system, they seem to be on their way. But alot of stuff needs to be adressed. I’ve never played an MMO where I’ve felt where the loot I’m getting is so BAD. Except for CoF p1 which just is a grind.

Why is every single rare(yellow) worth exactly 1 ecto? Why are 90% of exotics worth under 1 gold?

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again;

When the company let players buy in game gold, the loot you will get is designed to be frustrating and will eventually force X amouth of players to buy gold for real money.

Since the time spent gaining X gold is simply not worth the players X time gaining it.(Except CoF p1 ofc.)

While they work on this “filler content” they’re also working on big projects that, with the help of the feedback they receive from the “filler content”, will allow them to release large-scale quality patches.

Look long-term instead of the now. You want quality patches now instead of the filler content.

Allow me to explain this for a third time. I don’t want content patches now. I don’t want content patches every two weeks. I want content patches after such time has passed that the developers can release content that deep, meaningful, and engaging. I’m willing to wait whoever long that takes if it means not more “click F 150 times” type content.

If you’re willing to wait, then you should wait through this filler content.

From a development standpoint, if they pour all their resources into one gigantic team to create “the best” experience, it’ll fail. There would be too many things that would clash and it would flop.

After a certain point, you can’t keep adding more resources to a specific project.

Let Arenanet work at their own pace instead of trying to work at your pace. If you’re capable of leading a company like Arenanet, I don’t know what you’re doing on their forums, but good for you, you’re still not Arenanet.

I think you miss the point here. Anet set too fast of a pace to dish out new content at, and that’s why it’s repetitive and just plain stupid. We don’t want more content, we want better content, and by better, I mean content with more variety. I’d be willing to wait for a patch if it took them longer, because I know that it’d be worth it. If they’d work at my pace with those demands, this game would probably have a lot more players than it does now.

But as it is now, the content is pointless and just isn’t enjoyable to even play for 5 seconds.

I couldn’t care less about any of the living story stuff – it’s the exact opposite of what I want in the game.

All I want is more choice in skills and build depth. New weapon skills, the ability to select weapon skills from a pool of skills, and the ability to select a utility in the elite and heal slots if I so desire.

So as far as I am concerned, they get a 0/10 for player satisfaction for the last 12 months – disregarding bugfixes, there’s been nothing new added to the game I’ve played, wanted, or benefited from.

Couldn’t agree more with this topic. The ‘Living Story’ content is…well…sad and pitiful. There is no substance. All it provides is a cheap way for Anet to throw in a bunch of achievements that take most players a week or so to finish. There’s no real benefit to the ‘story’ as not a single one of these ‘Living Story’ updates have provided anything meaningful to it.

On top of that, there isn’t any rewards that are worth doing the content for. You get achievements and that’s it. For me, it isn’t worth it. I spent 5 years playing LotRO, 6+ playing WoW, even years within EQ and EQ2.

Why? Because they actually provided content and rewards that made me want to log in and play. So far, GW2 hasn’t done that with a single update outside of the SAB.

I’m with OP on this one. I’ve already said it too, so let’s say it again here for Anet to read it : I don’t care about quantity, I don’t care if I don’t have a new crappy event to accomplish every two weeks, I don’t care that you feed me with stupid back&forth quests with no meaningful reward.
What I care about, is a bug-free content, well worked, with plenty of things to do that does not seem repetitive or boring. Even if it takes 2 months for you to make it, or even 6 months. I want QUALITY over QUANTITY. Is that clear enough for you ?

Now, I read somewhere that since the start of living story, they increased the number of people working on it. Something like, at first it was a one person job, now it’s a 3 teams job. Well let me say that it’s barely noticeable. Yes there was some improvement, but still, you keep on serving us the same bug-riddled-repetitive-crappy stuff.

On another note, very pessimistic, I also read that NCsoft plan on using GW2 money for Aion, rather than making a true expansion for GW2. So, I know it’s not Anet’s fault, I know it’s not the developpers’ fault, I know, I know.
Still it makes me sick, and I want it to be known, for maybe it’ll add up to the growing discontent.

Lots of people enjoy the living story content. And living story content teams are separated from expansion content and core teams. So those skill, trait, geography and story expansions are well in the works.

I’m not sure why any of you would want to try to dissuade Anet from creating content that thousands of people enjoy that exists as a foundation for future story and offers diversionary content from the core game.

If its not for you, then its not. Don’t do it. Exercise some self control and ignore that update or just avoid that content. That means more than any forum post you can make would be since it seems most of you are incapable of delivering feedback without being cynical or just contributing misinformation. By this point, i’d wager the devs that frequent the forums recognize some of your names and don’t even bother reading anything that comes after, escalating crassness does not help that reputation.

After Dragonbash the forums were flooded with people that loved the music and theme; Aetherblades LS was praised for the Majory character, dungeon difficulty, story delivery; Four Winds got player credit for art design, movement playground, NPC dialog, Sanctum Sprint.

Those chapters also had their flaws. Dragonbash was grindy, the PvP event was prone to leeching. Aetherblades had a hard dungeon that was great, but was slightly marred by unclear achievements. In the Four Winds, some of the traversal required precision that was difficult for people with higher latency connections and Belcher’s Bluff was buggy leading to some frustration.

Queen’s Jubilee, i’m sure it will have something awesome everyone thinks is a blast, and i’m sure it will have something that either casual or hardcore players toss a fit about.

If you don’t want the cookies Anet is giving out until the cake is ready, you don’t have to have any. But you should know they are delicious. A lot of people like them. For what it’s worth, this is the last rotating festival content. The festivals are intended to be a foundation for living world, allowing the developers to now rotate them through the next year, starting with the Mad King in October again. They can keep cycling them while spending more time on developing bigger, better updates.

It remains to be seen what this looks like in reality, but it is the stated intent.

It’s not a foundation, though; it’s drapes. And it’s drapes that are changed for a new color every two weeks. But the guys buying and hanging the drapes are spending the budget (time, money, man-power) of the guys who are supposedly going to reinforce the actual foundation.

It’s OT but this has to be one of the best replies/quotes in the history of the internet. Just…. wow : )

As for the topic being discussed: I am one of those who expected GW2 to be a serious MMORPG instead of an arcade style MMO. I am not being judgemental, since a lot of the players seem to love that new direction. It’s just that after playing GW1 for all those years I thought they’d build upon the foundation that served them so well. I can understand that their philosophy might have changed and there might be some financial considerations in play as well, but GW2 and GW1 are two very different games.
It’s an entirely subjective opinion that’s aggravated by my fondness of GW1 so I am not saying that GW2 is in any way bad ‘per se’. If the majority of the playerbase wants easy-to-digest content with lots of minigames then I should just go somewhere else I guess, which is absolutely fine.

I had a discussion about Living Story with some Guld mates, and my concerns about GW2 becoming a wasteland when people start running to other MMO’s and Anet has to merge servers to keep population high so It’s not like you are the only player in a massive gaming world.

I see these weekly updates as very generous offers from a well established development team that does something very few teams do – Giving us free content, and very often.

The problem I see is that all this free content is TEMPORARY.

I’m sure what people want to hear from Anet are things like… “We’ve also got teams working on larger updates, giving you more PERMAMENT AREAS to explore, more PERMANENT Dungeons, more armour sets with actual VARIETY, more weapons and better designs, more dragons, more CHALLENGING World Bosses, and improved Dynamic Events that are actually DYNAMIC”

The problem I see is that Anet is trying to please too many people, and the people they are trying to please are more of the casual kind. No one really wants anything that is actually challenging these days, or requires some thinking. A lot of the events and bosses I come across I always think of ways how these could be improved, and be a lot more challenging and interesting to fight.

As it stands now a lot of the world bosses and dynamic events are either too easy, end too fast, or just too kitten boring. -And I’m not suggesting they add 40-Man Raid Dungeons that take 4 hours to complete, but simply look back at what they promised and improve on it, which they have been doing… somewhat.

I’m scared that Anet are just trying to do too much to keep casual players interested.

And since they get little to no funding from NCSoft, and majority of the Gem sales go to NCSoft for WildStar and other projects, how can Anet afford to do what they are doing now without releasing Expansion Packs, giving us huge tons of permanent content?

Hopefully so. Anet is a fantastic team, a role-model in the industry. Whether It’s a master scheme, or they just generally care for us and by doing so they give us free content.

I haven’t loved an MMO like this in almost 6 years, and missed out on GW1 because I never actually heard of it until 2010.

I really would hate for them to just focus on this temporary content until they realize that what people really want are more areas to explore, more dungeons, more fractals, more weapons/armour and better designs and variety, and more/better dynamic events and dragons/challenging world bosses.

May seem like It’s all about more, more and more, and it kinda is. You’ve got so many areas that we aren’t able to explore, Elder Dragons to have amazing, epic encounters with that aren’t complete bore-fests like Zhaitan, and world bosses that do more then just stay in one spot for 2 – 10 minutes and you do nothing but spam a single attack, while standing in the same spot.

Agreed. When the update does not fuel new significance to your game play then there’s no reason to give more attention to it than it’s material rewards; so, you lose interest, and then you lose sight of that big picture that it was trying to paint. The cumulative effect that it aims at is lost, and I’m not sure it can be salvaged or re-created without a cinematic.
At this point the living story content is so small that it can’t compare to the lasting story of Tyria itself, giving it the feeling of a small and thematic daily quest structure, rather than an enhancement of the world (dare I say “expansion”, which I guess I would just prefer).

Yes, pleaaaaaase .

About why, lets me set why the very first two releases had been the best:

Shadow of Mad king : A lot of mini dungeons, and new types of achievments, also a good lore, and a epical boss at end. (Basically, a lot of PERMANENT content, and a cool lore and boss temporary.)
The Lost shores : A new permanent full map, with JP’s, new enemys, variation of gathering and scenario; Also, a new permanent type of dungeon that changed all the way of players fun : Fractals, with a level-gain in the hardness, and of course, a personal nemesis(Canach), new faction (Consortium), a cool and full history, and a LEGENDARY World boss, that had been a epical fight, unforgottable (Ancient Karka).

I prefer they work on solve bugs, but maitain the sort or releases of Mad king and Lost shores.

However they have mentioned that they have quite a few developers, they have 4 teams doing living content work, and an additional team doing other development work. I happened to stop at the Anet booth at GDC, they were extremely active hiring developers. They have the ability to not only produce living story chapters every 2 week, but also to produce larger episodes on occasion. Don’t fret that living story is taking away from your expansion, because it isn’t.

No we don’t, but we know this; If not for all the Living Kindergarten Stuff we’d be face to face with the second dragon story and on the right path for the game, not to mention the added 3 or 4 more explorable zones.

There is no evidence to support what you’re saying here. We don’t know what we would have if we didn’t have living stories so stop pretending that you know.

I’ve seen devs on the forums reassuring us that this is indeed what they are doing. There will be new permanent areas, etc.

Essentially, as I understand it, what they’ve been doing is sort of practicing how to use their tools effectively. No other MMO that I can recall has produced as much and as varied, and relatively bug-free content, in such a short space of time; they obviously have some really special content production tools at their disposal. Yes, there’s been a lot of “filler”, but lots of people do enjoy it, and meanwhile, the team is getting more and more in a position to deliver on the more long-term promises.

That’s the picture I’m getting from dev comments anyway. I hope it’s the case.

I share your hopes; but I also have my doubts. After the waiter brings you your twelfth loaf of complimentary bread – each loaf accompanied with an assurance that your steak is almost ready – it’s only natural to start wondering just what the kitchen staff is working on. In our case, we can’t even smell the steak. The only aroma coming from the kitchen is that of more bread. I don’t want to fill up on bread…I want meat…expertly prepared, hearty, delicious, fulfilling meat.

well it IS set up to be a recurring festival, but the story mission drove the plot forward, and i loved the gauntlet.

After having played it for a while, I must say that I agree. The gauntlet is alright, its a bit broken but decent. The rest though is a thorough waste of resources, and a shameless grind.

Wait wait wait did I just get hit on the head or something? A user who dislikes something but actually takes the remainder of the playerbase into account rather than QQing about the content being removed and assuming everyone else agrees with the way they think?

Am… am I still on the GW2 forums?

(Yes I do like the Living Story. I dunno why I just really do so it’s good to hear someone actually take the players that enjoy the content into account. )

They should make persistent content, e.g. finally turning WvW into something functional. But I guess these disposable monthly events generate more money because people rush to get those “exclusive” items by either grinding or buying gems.

Instead of filler content, do you want rushed content like Lost Shores again?

I actually wish we’d have a huge world event like Lost Shores again… but only after it got optimized so we aren’t destroyed by waves of invisible crabs.
