I love the game played since release, ive had a few breaks along the way, always come back.
But im getting more and more bored faster, and the new content is not holding my attention. It just seems like everything else, a new skin for what we have already got….

I suppose that really depends on what you’re looking for. I have to admit, while I played this game almost daily upon release, at this point, I mostly only log in for the new story patches and then go on hiatus until the next one. There may be a lot of things I still have to do, like collect all the journal entries from Bloodstone Fen, or finish off my HoT pet collection, but those things only nominally interest me.

However, I’m a sucker for the store and the lore that goes into this game. I’m enthralled every time new story comes out. And right now, I’m just as curious as everyone else as what the next plot twist will reveal. That is where I mostly get my enjoyment out of this game.

So what is boring you so? Are the new maps just not interesting you? Are the Living Story chapters not challenging enough? What are you looking for? Answer that, and it might come to you soon enough.

It’s a game, which means the only reason to play it is to have fun and if you’re not having fun you should stop.

Importantly though it doesn’t have to be an all or nothing decision. Since there’s no subscription and nothing you’ll really miss out on if you don’t log in every day you don’t have to decide to quit completely, you could just play less. Or even stop for a week or so and then come back to it if you want to.

I pretty much stopped playing after Wintersday until…about now actually. It wasn’t really a decision I made, I just found myself choosing to do other things instead. Sometimes I’d log in to get the daily reward and mine my home instance nodes, sometimes I wouldn’t. I didn’t even start the new Living Story chapter until a few days after it had come out.

And you know what the consequences were? Nothing. Ok I’m not as far along in some of my goals as I would be if I’d kept playing every day, but I’ve got a lot further in other games. Even when people quit for months or years the advice they’re given on ‘catching up’ is: check your skills, make sure you’ve got exotics at least, maybe buy the story chapters you missed, and then you’re good to go.

It really annoys me when people say this. Not that I have anything against you or others who think in this way, but you need to realise that myself and plenty of other people will play this game every day whether we are having fun or not. When I have certain targets to achieve in this game, I will keep grinding and keep grinding and keep grinding until I get them. More often than not when I am doing this I quite literally hate my time playing this game but I still do it anyway. Maybe Anet doesn’t care because they still get money but I like to think they want people to enjoy the time playing the game, even if they would be playing it anyway. This is why people will keep playing while complaining how boring the game is or how much they dislike it. Taking a break is not an option for me.

It is the same for the new living world episodes for me right now. They are really short as far as story goes and the maps are just so uninteresting compared to the core Heart of Thorns maps (VB, AB, TD, DS). Those maps are so much fun but all the maps released in season 3 except bloodstone fen have been extremely boring after the first couple of hours of exploring the zone. Mainly due to the lack of a map-wide meta event. I just cannot get interested in a map without a big meta event outside of exploration. I have to agree with you, OP, living world maps are becoming more and more boring and in my opinion Lake Doric is the worst yet.

So yeah, the story is great, the scenery is great but the new content only keeps me interested for a couple of hours with the events being designed in the way they are, rather than the core-HoT maps which keep me interested for a couple hundred hours.

It seems odd, to me, to voluntarily do something one hates, when one does not have to.

Each to their own, I suppose.

Yeah it is hard to explain, but when I have a target in the game (such as getting legendary division last pvp season) I will do whatever I have to and commit as much time as it takes to get it done, whether I enjoy it or not. I play content that I don’t like to get achievements and rewards or content that I do like but I have done so much that I get sick of it (such as doing tarir 100 times, after 70 times even I had a hard time forcing myself to do it).

I guess a lot of people have different views on this kind of thing.

It’s called OCD. Sometimes it’s just “I have to complete this!!” or it can be a lot worse for some.
I had a friend who had a sign at her desk that said “You say Obsessive Compulsive like it’s a bad thing” I have OCD somewhat. I know I do. I just try not to let it take over and so far I am doing a pretty good job I think, lol.

I have taken several breaks already myself due to boredom. It’s the right thing to do, because then you come back with renewed enthusiasm.

I do understand your point in a way but really, your goal isn’t running away. It will be right where you left off even if you don’t feel like working on it for a few days or even weeks or months.

I experienced this myself – pushing myself to do the same boring thing over and over to archieve something in another game until eventually i was just burned out and quit. The things i worked so hard on are now rotting away on a account i may or may not log in on for 5 mins once a month because i just can’t bring myself to actually play the game anymore.

That was when i became one of those " It is a game, it is meant to be fun, if it isn’t i won’t play it " people.

Then go mow the lawn, or do your homework, or go play World of Tanks or something.

All of those options sound more useful than telling us about your feelings.

Take a break. I recommend going cold turkey and not even doing dailies for at least a month. Then see whether you feel like coming back or not. There’s no sub, so it costs you nothing to go AFK for that long.

If/when you return, you’ll notice how much you missed some things and be able to better enjoy the game. OR, you’ll be reminded of how annoying other things can be and it will be easier for you to stay away.

Alternatively, just come back for new stories. Play intensely for a weekend or two every 3-4 months. You get to be hyped about all the changes you missed, and which non-stop players are already taking for granted.

I strongly recommend that you do not keep playing the way you have, as that leads to the kind of burnout which can sour you on more than just the one game.

That was when i became one of those " It is a game, it is meant to be fun, if it isn’t i won’t play it " people.

Same here. I occasionally fall into that mindset, although usually only when the goal is limited, like getting the mini shadow raven during Halloween, and that’s exactly what puts me off playing the game for a while.

What gets me back is remembering that I don’t have to achieve anything, even when it feels like I do. If I log into a level 12 character and spend an evening wandering around a starter map gathering materials I don’t really need and doing the odd heart that’s fine. And if tomorrow I decide I really want to play a different game instead that’s also fine.

This is also why I don’t like subscription games. In spite of all the arguments about “it costs less than a movie (these people apparently go to more up market cinemas than I do) so if you play for 2 hours a month you’re getting your moneys worth” I could never shake the feeling that if I was playing a game and it wasn’t the one I was paying for permission to play then I was wasting that money. And then I resented the game because I felt forced to play it, even if I’d otherwise enjoy it.

It’s probably not entirely rational, but neither is my compulsive need to collect mini pets. Striking a balance between the two works much better for me than trying to force myself to always act in a particular way just because people on the internet think I should.

Prob is not burnout etc, problem is as suggested stop playing for a while… i have been doing that, but what i mean is that after each break im getting bored fast, the game isnt holding me any longer. And instead of appreciating the positives of the game, as i used to after a break. Now i cant stop remembering the reasons that i have taken so many breaks, and think that if ive needed to take sooo many breaks then really im not enjoying it. Ye i like the stories, but it feels like every new zone, every new achievement, every new skin/wep etc are all just the same thing, kind of rinse and repeat.
And like said there is only so many time, you can do boring grindy achievements, then they make new content with the same kinda thing…. and in the end there is only achievements left to do, as i find the maps get boring fast and have no interest in the cosmetic ladder of needing x amount of new zone materials over and over again…

Anet isn’t as big as Blizzard, so you have to temper expectations unfortunately. They tried very hard to deliver big exciting content packs with living world season 1 and 2, but it just wasn’t enough. People wanted a real expansion to hold their attention, but then HoT for whatever reason didn’t have as much content as expected. All we can hope for is expansion #2 is a lot bigger.

I took a 6 month break and didn’t log in at all when I got bored of the game .As it is now, I log in, catch the daily reward & log back out as I don’t particularly care for the direction the game has gone/is going and it is no longer entertaining for me. The ranger has traded her longbow for a sniper rifle and the guardian wields a lightsaber instead of a sword.
