We thought based on the previous wording that just logging into the game, doing your dailies, would unlock the living story for you to play at a later date. However, since girl friend was waiting for a longer period of free time to play she didn’t actually play through the story and just logged in for dailies and to change character looks.

After the patch today, it seems if you haven’t started playing the previous story it requires you to buy it for 200 gems.

I seriously thought just logging into the game during the week of the living story would allow you to unlock this?

She checked through all her level 80 characters to see if any of them have access to the previous story, and they don’t. She needs to buy it.

Is this intended?

Player has to click on it in his/her journal, then it stays. So one additional step.

And while I don’t think it was intentional, it was communicated ambiguously until last episode – it certainly sounded like a login was all that was required until we actually saw it 2 weeks ago.

EDIT: Anet, consider stickying a clearer explanation.

All this time I thought you just had to log-in to activate it.

If I were her I’d be pretty annoyed that they spent all this time promoting the ‘log-in-and-get-it’ idea when it actually required another step. Write CS, maybe they’ll give it to you for free..

Might I suggest you open a ticket to ask about this. They can obviously see your GF logged into her account multiple times and they should certainly then gift her the content.

Also, if this happens enough, they will realize their instructions on HOW to unlock the content are NOT sufficent and can attempt to change that aspect of the process.

How did she manage to do two weeks of dailies without clicking on that giant green thing? Both times now I clicked it as soon as it popped up without even thinking about it. It’s enormous and sparkly. And right next to the daily chest. I can’t even imagine being able to resist clicking it for two weeks while logging in every day.

If you have trouble unlocking it, try emptying your tp inbox. It fixes it sometimes.

She did click on the green star. That wasn’t the issue.

Actually thanks to the person who posted about emptying the trading post. She had a load of dyes sitting in there and emptying it out suddenly unlocked the story both the first episode and allowed her to ‘play’ the second one.

So the issue is resolved.

You have to click the big green star, and then click start story or unlock story or something.

Simply logging in does not seem to qualify. They may want to reword any statements that imply only logging in is required.

I mean, you have to log in and click your mouse twice, however long you figure that would take you, so it’s almost as easy as just logging in.

EDIT: Just read now about the TP thing. Did not know, disregard this I suppose.

I won’t stop because I can’t stop.

Here are a couple of steps you can take to trouble-shoot this situation:

  • Check your Trading Post. Don’t leave it cluttered up with hundreds of transactions, do a little housekeeping! Seriously, clearing buy and sell orders and generally tidying (if not emptying) the TP does fix this issue for nearly everyone.
  • Check your in-game mailbox. If you show 10/10 mails, reduce your mailbox by several mails. Note: Deleting one mail may not accomplish the objective because you may have other mails queued up for delivery. If that’s the case, the new mails will just fill up the box again. Do a tidy-up and get your final total down to 5/10 or so, so that you know there’s space for inbound mails.

If these steps do not help you, by all means feel free to submit a ticket. But taking a couple of minutes to do these two troubleshooting steps solves the issue for nearly everyone and it’s fast and easy to do it.

Oh, and by the way, you are not required to “click the star” but will get the content if you log in during the episode.

EDIT TO CLARIFY:

To unlock the content, you need to enter the game world. You cannot simply log onto the character selection screen.

Do I have to log on to each individual character on my account? Or is just logging in on my Guardian or w/e good enough for the entire account.

According to what we’ve been told, logging in will give your account access, but your alts have to be 80 to play it.

So, logging into an account with a level 2 character, and wandering around Tyria for a seconds, even if I don’t get the green star, will still unlock the content for when I do reach 80?

  • Check your Trading Post. Don’t leave it cluttered up with hundreds of transactions, do a little housekeeping!

People who are buying mats, zommy fodder, or containers (e.g. moldy bags) are likely to have hundreds of pending transactions. It’s constant weeding, rather than just “a little” housekeeping. A lot of times, folks will want to just play the new content rather than managing their inventory.

Accordingly, Gaile do you know if people who just logon (and enter the game world) are going to be able to unlock each chapter if they also have a full TP queue?

I ask because I have been sending out semi-monthly reminders to guildies who I know don’t have time to play regularly these days. I’d like to know if I need to update my advice to “logon and pick up stuff from the TP” or it’s ok “just logon and start up any character.”

Thanks.

According to captainteemo.6537’s post up there, it would seem to be that, as long as you logged into the game world at some point while the chapter was active, you can unlock it later on when another chapter is active as its becoming unlocked was queued up.

(evidenced by their stating that Chapter 1 and 2 unlocked at the same time upon their girlfriend’s emptying of the TP – so Chapter 1 had finally unlocked properly despite chapter 2 being the active chapter since 1’s unlocking had been in the queue to unlock since they logged into the game world during that chapter)

So you can:

  • Log into the game world while Chapter X is active and not unlock it properly due to having a huge TP pick up queue that gets left unemptied.
Result: Chapter X unlock gets added to the queue
  • Then log into the game world when Chapter Y is active and still not officially unlock Chapter X or Y due to not emptying your TP pick-up tab.
Result: Chapter Y unlock gets added to the queue
  • Then log into the game world when Chapter Z is active and finally empty your TP pick-up.
Result: Chapter X, Chapter Y and Chapter Z all unlock at the same time due to reaching their point in the queue.

Since it gets backlogged, as long as a player enters the game world while a chapter is active, they can eventually get the official unlocks for the past chapters upon emptying the TP during a later chapter.

Ah, many thanks, Stin Vec. I read Gaile’s post(s) carefully, but not Teemo’s (as I should have done). (Note to self: never post when rushed.)

That’s also good to know, since it means my friends with actual Real Lives™ won’t have to worry about that.

Once again, my thanks for doing the heavy lifting to answer my question

To unlock the content, you need to enter the game world. You cannot simply log onto the character selection screen.

Ok so if I have for example have 20 character does that mean I have to login each any every one of those character to unlock it for all 20 of them or do I just need to login one character? In other words is the unlocking account bound or just character bound?

So do I need to enter the game world with every one of my level 80 characters to unlock the current content during those 2 weeks? Or can I just log on & focus on it with one character & come back at a later time & get my other characters through (work on episode 1 while episode 5 is in progress with other characters I didnt log on with during the initial release)?

Unlocking a Chapter unlocks it Account-wide, meaning for every character on the account.

I would be wary of queing too many Chapters, though, as the game has had issues with most things queued beyond 4 or so.
