When other players loot them.

Is this supposed to happen? I’ve had people ahead of me loot one, it disappears, if I get there fast enough the two bags are on the ground and lootable. If I’m too slow even the bags are gone.

It happened with the Dragon Hologram projectors and the Wintersday gift boxes, so I imagine it’s intentional.

Although didn’t they patch the projectors to give the holograms more health specifically so they would stay around longer so more people could participate?

Current kite design definitely doesn’t fit their design philosophy of always being happy to see other players in the world. It goes right back to the crafting-node spawn camp they specifically designed against.

Slightly different here. Nothing to fight no need to tag anything. If you are within range(able to see the basket’s nameplate) you should have no problem getting to the basket loot even if you are being followed by a horde of enemies(unless said enemies have snares of course …). They are closer to the wintersday boxes. That is if you are already on your way to one you should generally still be able to loot it even if someone else gets there first.

I saw two kite baskets near each other and also near several Risen. I chose to clear the Risen before picking up the baskets, not realizing that if another player ran in and picked them up (which is what happened) they would disappear. That does seem like exactly the scenario that Anet specifically stated would have no part in GW2. It didn’t particularly upset me, but it did very much take me by surprise.

Except this isn’t how it works within the actual game. You see a basket icon on the map, and you run (or WP and then run) to it. If someone loots it at that point, when you go running up to it, it (and the bags) can be gone. It isn’t a matter of “being close enough to see the nameplate” because if you’re that close to the other player you’d most likely group, if that even helps to share loot.

If someone is clearing the zone a basket or two ahead of you, you will get nothing, unless you notice the pattern and shoot over to another part of the map to ninja available ones away from the other person. Not a good design.

Here are my findings, as to how they work. They are similar to the dragon holos, they land and have an icon on the map, once they are opened by a player it drops two loot bags. These bags have a timer on them, if you get to them before that timer then all good. One example is i was on my way to a basket cause i saw it on the map, almost there i saw the icon was gone so i knew another player had opened it. Came over a hill and saw the loot bags off in the distance, got within 10 feet of them and the timer ran out and the bags disappeared. So i went afk for a bit and waited for the basket to reset. So if you see a basket then it disappears from the map, high tail it over there or you’ll miss it and have to wait for the cool down. Not sure how long the cool down is, prolly 5 to 10 min at most.

Each location can only be looted once per day, per account, so why even bother having them disappear at all? Seems like they just love being contrary to the Manifesto and core design of the game in recent months…

yeah i agree they should have them set up like mining nodes, where you see it and can get it without having to worry about beating people there.

Exactly. I wish they would think of these things by default.

There are icons on the map? I didn’t see any. Just little “kite bag” pairs on the ground. :/

I agree with Fiontar. Seeing as how you can’t exactly farm them, there’s no reason for them to disappear.

What especially bothers me is that unlike the dragon holograms, which you could still see the base of even if they weren’t active, there’s no sign of these baskets at all if they’re not available, so unless you have knowledge of their locations, there’s no way to know where they’ll spawn. Admittedly, the animation of them floating down to the surface is cute… And thinking about it, I think the Wintersday boxes were similar. Regardless, it’s pretty inconvenient for people who are trying to find them for the first time. Thankfully, you only need to open thirty of them (you need sixty, but each basket gives you two bags), so it hopefully won’t take -too- long to complete the achievement. If you’re trying to get quartz/kite fortunes, I guess you’re less lucky…

So they are ALL disappearing on ALL maps?

I was in a single map and saw my first ones – so you’re telling me that the REST of the map has NONE?

All the maps I’ve travelled upon so far have zero. None. Kaput. Well that’s not true, I did see one next to the garrison waypoint but it vanished when I opened it. Never seen it there again and I’ve been visiting it daily for crystal transmutation.

There’s a few misconceptions in this thread, so I’ll try my best to clarify things from my experiences:

1. Each Kite Basket spawns 2 Kite Supplies when opened. The Kite Supplies is what you need to loot for it to count towards the title, NOT the Kite Baskets.

2. Each specific Kite Supply can only be looted once per day per account, so don’t bother camping out at one particular Kite Basket. This looting is also specific to each player, so players can’t “steal supplies” from each other.

3. Icons for unopened Kite Baskets appear on the map. When a player opens the Basket, the icon disappears. HOWEVER, the Kite Supplies that are spawned from the Basket remain in the world for about 1 – 2 mins, so if you are close, run to the Basket location anyway as you may still be able to make it to the Supplies before they despawn.

With the above in mind, here is my recommended strategy for getting to 60 Kite Supplies.

Firstly, pick a map that isn’t very popular. Mid-level maps like Fields of Ruin or Dredgehaunt Cliffs tend to be fairly empty of players, so most Kite Baskets will remain available until you open them yourself.

Pick a route that will take you past several Kite Baskets, adding Personal Waypoints (Alt+click, although you can only put one Personal Waypoint on the map at a time) to remind you where the Basket locations are.

From here, just move from one location to the next, opening the basket, looting the supplies, and then moving on. Once you’ve gathered all or the majority of the baskets in a zone, move to a new map and start over.
