I got a friend who started playing again yesterday and I was wondering if episode 4 will be free for him once it’s released or will he have to pay for all episodes for LS3 the old and the future ones?
The first 3 are now locked for him and can only be unlocked with gems.
If he logs in now, ep 3 will be unlocked. Ep 4 was just anounced for early february. Propably tuesday 6th.
However, he cannot play LS3, any episode, without a HoT acount.
E.g. Unlocking and access are seperate aspects. You can have it unlocked even without access. So if he buys the game now he can safely play the whole story and not be scared he’ll miss ep3 or 4 as long as he logged in during the active periods. But he wont have LS2 or LS3 e1 and e2
I have a friend who never bought HoT; they bought the core game when it was on sale for US$10. They have LS3.1, 3.2, and 3.3 unlocked, but they cannot get to the new zones because they don’t own HoT, i.e. just as Amaimon says: they have unlocked the stories, but cannot access them (yet).

The friend may have Living World Season Two. It depends on how long the friend has been away.
If the friend has starting playing again, now, he/she has unlocked Season 3 Episode 3, and will unlock Episode 4 (if he/she continues to log in regularly), but will need to purchase, with Gems, Episodes 1 and 2. Of course, access requires a Heart of Thorns-enabled account.
Everyone can unlock the Living Story episodes for free by logging in during the release period for each one, they just can’t play Season 3 without buying HoT. (And you can’t play S2, HoT or S3 without being level 80.)
If you just look at the list of chapters in the Story Journal it will show a padlock symbol next to any you can’t currently play, but if you click on each one it will tell you the main thing that’s stopping you playing it (but annoyingly not all the things).
So for example Season 2 & 3 are locked on my free account – if I look at any S2 episode it tells me I need to buy it now for 200 gems. If I look at any S3 episode it tells me it requires HoT.
And if I look at either on a low level character on my main account it’s locked (but with a chest icon instead of a padlock) and tells me I need to be level 80.
