Lake Doric engineer-only leather farms
Making up for getting rid of throwable turrets maybe?
What’s the thinking behind the engineer-only leather farms in Lake Doric? I haven’t done this episode on mine yet and wanted to join a farm group but all were engineer-only.
People figured out that engineers with turrets could sit at the bottom, throw down a new turret when the previous one expired, and farm effectively. So, it became the current fashion, and anet have moved to make it less compelling, but the players have not caught up with that yet.
eg: the thinking is that players feel like this is the most efficient way to farm leather, so that’s what they do.
Your best bet is probably to start your own farm group that isn’t engi-only, and let other people join you.
You can do several things .
1. Only stupid engineers decide its an engineer farm only and you can just ignore them in chat and farm – its not like they can do anything about it . Most engi farms i seen have a mix of classes .
2. Look on Lfg for anyone doing hill/tower farming – yes some of us still do the old farm
3. If no2 has no lfgs make a lfg stating looking for hill/tower farming
The tower/hill farm does still exist but is overlooked as alot of players ( from what ive been told when sitting in engi farm ) are too lazy to put effort into doing the hill – no offence to those engis who dont feel that way but when you get 20 engis stating lazy then same with other engi groups you see a pattern emerge . Also hill squads do like to have a big squad and when theres a squad or 2 of engis camp sitting it can be very hard to form a big hill squad due to limitations on maps populations – plus tryin to find a map with no engis is like going to orr hoping to see no risen – very very doubtful .
Tried it with my engi and the results were average at best. Might be good for semi-afk people, but as an active farm, Bitterfrost is better. You get brazier events all over the place, chest run after every storm and if you got the map karma buff you can get a nice bundle of that too.
Going up the hill.. Now that,s something else. You get way better results.
I don’t know why it’s considered a “leather farm”. You get next to no actual leather from the engineer turret farm. It’s mostly for loot bags that may or may not, but almost never, contain actual leather. I think people are getting confused with the ACTUAL leather farm where you go up the hill and kill bloodstone crazed centaurs who drop hides that are salvaged. For actual leather. You can’t do that by spamming turrets in a single spot though. The centaurs at the base are not bloodstone crazed, and the ones on the hill don’t venture into the base unless someone manages to pull the 2 or 3 at the bottom of it.
If you are after leather than just be patient, people still do leather farms but not as much. The engi farm is just that, engi sitting around semi afk and collecting heavy supply bags. The bags contain next to no leather but you do get what you would normally get from a heavy bag. Anet did nerf the farm but people are still getting a bag or 2 a minute so it’s worth it for them.
Until Anet nerfs the actual supply bag drop itself you won’t see very many groups doing leather farms. As someone said earlier engineers do tend to just chase them off when someone ask about it in map.
Good info. Thanks, folk.
Didn’t they nerf this farm by increasing the respawn rate of centaurs?

That’s my understanding, yes. I’d assume that it’s now approximately as rewarding as any other “AFK” farm in the game.
(Note: the definition of AFK that a bunch of folks on the forums use, and that anet use, are not in sync, and it’s entirely possible to sit in one place and farm this as long as you are responsive to gm whispers and/or actually pressing some buttons. Regardless of what should be, that is what is.)

I think ArenaNet is to blame for AFK style farming. Making things rare then increasing the uses for it is a “recipe” for this kind of behavior.
Instead of making farms reduce the number of items needed to craft. I really don’t think it would be any more detrimental to the environment/economy than these type of farming practices.
