Hello, because today was patch day, I logged in to my second account to unlock the episode, however, when I went into the story journal I got to see that I infact didnt unlock it and that I have to buy it to unlock it.
This goes against everything you’ve said, since you said you have atleast 2 weeks to unlock it.
I did also map, and still didnt unlock it.
Is this because I do not have a level 80 on that account? And if so.. why wasn’t this mentioned?
See, this is why you never wait til the last minute to do something….
However, since the new patch has not yet gone live, I’m guessing this is probably a bug.
Of course, it could be intended that the unlock window is up to the night before (or until office opens the day of) the new patch. We will need further clarification on what the specific end terms of the window is. As patch time tend to vary, I would not be srurpised if the end period for the ‘free’ window is simply 11:59 pm pacific time Monday night before patch day.

You don’t have to have a lvl 80 to unlock it, just have to have an 80 to play it(unlock it for that specific character). I unlocked it for my little brothers account, and he has no 80s. …but waiting until the day of a new patch to unlock it, was really a bad idea.
Edit: just reread your post OP… so it seems like when you logged on it did unlock, but then when you went to double check in your journel, it wasn’t there… if so, that is because the specific charcter is not 80, and thus does not have it unlocked for that charcter, which is why you cannot see it… that doesn’t mean it didt unlock for the account. just level someone to 80, then it will appear in the journel.
I’m guessing it is a lot like the Monthly reset. Patch day starts at 00:00 UTC of that particular patch. Thus, one would have until 11:59 of the last day before patch day to unlock the content at no cost.
It makes sense, and follows the pattern, as otherwise they would manually have to change when Episodes change from no cost to a cost in Gems.
Like episode 1 of the new living story a couple weeks ago, when I logged in there was a glowing green star on the right of my screen above the mini map. When clicking the star a window pops up telling me it’s now unlocked and gives me the option to open the story journal. So if you’re not seeing the new episode unlocked, look for a big glowing green star on your screen.
