“Gw2, It’s still on the Table!” – Anet
Ya, Lost Shores was a total nightmare. Latency was off the charts causing constant disconnects, and you couldn’t see the enemies half the time. Which was super fun when the karka would do their roll attacks.
And, at the end of the day, all that content just wasn’t worth it. A lot of people got a precursor from it, but the entire event was a huge one shot. You were busy that day? You missed it. Computer couldn’t handle all that strain? You miss it. Dynamic events are put on a loop for a reason, so people can take their time and do it whenever they want.
“One time only” events are much cooler in concept than they tend to be in practice. Lots of players have to miss out due to scheduling, latency can ruin it even for people who do attend (Lost Shores,) and if there are any other bugs/performance issues, there’s no option to patch it in and let people go again. (When I saw King Thorn burst out of the Lion Statue, his model didn’t render in the cinematic, so the statue exploded for no reason.)
There are finite resources to go around, so instead of investing heavily into something that’s very likely to go wrong (a one-time encounter,) it makes more sense for them to do repeatable instances (season 2 episodes,) or events on a repeatable cycle. (Silverwastes, Battle of Lion’s Arch, etc.)
I know people don’t always feel like they’re making a real impact on the world when they know events are on a loop, but it’s never really bothered me. As long as you keep moving, instead of staying in one area and actually doing the events over and over, I think it’s a good way to flesh out the world and allow you to have an impact as you’re exploring it.
I might never drive the bandits out of Queensdale, but I at least I can protect a farm from them while I’m passing by. From my character’s perspective, I’ve made a difference, even if I haven’t from the all-knowing, all-seeing perspective of a player who can tell when and where everything happens or will happen.
I agree with the others.
I was one of the lucky ones who got to “play” through Lost Shores. Most of it consisted of hanging around the computer waiting for the next bit to start, playing for a few minutes then going back to waiting. The finale was a complete mess: run from the waypoint to wherever the giant karka was, get as close as you could before the game froze, mash your skills, wait to see if you died, the event moved on and you were left behind or you got completely disconnected and then start the process over. And that was with a pretty good computer that could normally run the game with little/no lag.
It’s not something I’d ever want to repeat.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
I see your point and I totally agree since I play on a mid range PC and struggle with GW2 sometimes even in Teq fight..
However you can work around it with lowering the number of people who can get into the map and increasing the number of maps for example.
It was just an idea out of frustration .. if we’re not getting an expansion at least let us do something rewarding .. anyhow thank you for your replies.
I think it’s interesting to look at this thread and another one posted today (“Will Season 1 Re-release?”) alongside each other, since at their heart they’re asking for two completely different, but valid things. One wants big, permanent changes, while the other wants events that can be relived for those who missed them.
In a way, you can see the two perspectives paralleled by Season 1 and Season 2 of the Living Story. (Thus far, anyway.)
Yeah, I’ll just echo the comments about Lost Shores. The thing is, the hype leading up to the event was fantastic and the “feels” circulating during the start of it were probably unmatched by any release since. All of that went downhill very, very fast though.
Great idea, does not implement well.

im not sure why, but your initial post makes me think of that escort event in Straits of Devastation that scales up so that 3 champion abominations spawn when there is a zerg there. Before the megaserver update, the world boss zerg would sometimes go there for laughs. The first time i went there were so many defeated players it was crazy. Regardless, fighting tons of enemeis/champs is not as fun as can be expected (i missed the lost shores unfortunately)
EDIT: found the event in straits of devastation (i think this is it)
