After the final fight in the recent story episode, Canach asks Anise to be freed of his debt to her:

Canach: Anise, while they have their moment… To the matter of my billet…
Countess Anise: Not wasting any time, eh?
Canach: Not when it should be my own.
Countess Anise: You served me faithfully and, given the bearded reptile buried somewhere beneath me, you have held up your end of the bargain.
Countess Anise: Consider yourself a free sylvari.

What is that reference to “the bearded reptile buried somewhere beneath me”? The first time I heard it, I said “What??”. Any ideas?

Probably a nod to the “head of the snake” title of the episode.

And Caudacus had a gnarly beardthing.

What Rauderi said. It’s just Anise getting one last insult in of Caudecus, nothing more.

I’m like 99.99% sure it’s either Mordremoth or Caudecus, and given the hidden meaning between lines, I’m like 87.23% sure it’s Caudecus

I’m too literal.. “bearded reptile” == Caudecus is a connection I’d never make. -)

It’s clearly Caudecus. Calling someone a “reptile” is an insult suggesting inhuman evil, at least in such a context, and his beard has been highlighted already in the episode, by Canach and by the creepy faces. Canach’s mission has been to bring Caudecus to justice, doing so was the condition of his billet release.

So she’s saying “you finished your mission, the creepy face room somewhere below us is now Caudecus’ tomb, you are free as per our agreement.”

Um… how is there a 12.77% chance it’s a reference to Mordremoth? Mordy was all viney, thorny and plant-like. Nothing really serpentine about him, and certainly not bearded. Plus, at the time of the conversation, that dragon would’ve been dead for over a year. In my mind, there’s no doubt she’d been referring to Caudecus, thus his death led to the immediate release of Canach.

like, it’s still a dragon, and so calling them a lizard would be okay since it’s a figure of speech. It’s bearded part that makes it 87.23% sure it was a reference to caudecus, though, but yea, I hadn’t really thought about the time gap. thought it was shorter. in that case I raise the initial value to 96.28%
