PLS respect player's time: skip dialogue
Either let me do my achievements on the first run through or let me skip all dialogue when going back through the story for achievements, I don’t need this kind of wasteful time.

Stupid comment. Hearing same dialog second time is waste of time, there should be button to skip dialogs.
I agree 100%… especially when the achievement is “jump to avoid dmg”
I’d love to do the final fight cheevos but I’m not wasting my time with literally 10 minutes of dialogue before each attempt.
I haven’t replayed any of the content because I don’t want to sit through all the dialog.
As a roleplayer it feels terrible to advocate skipping haha, but especially with the summit part I totally agree that that option would be a good thing for the achievement playthroughs. Should be unskippable the first time of course! Since it’s an RPG, sitting through the story at least once should be mandatory!
Please, allow us to begin directly in the omphalos chamber just before the attack when we’re doing the story for the second time for achievement.
Yessss please! It was annoying but “OK” for the previous achievements, but the dialogue and downtime in the World Summit is just ridiculous.
I really want to do the achievements but honestly having to sit through all the RP every single time is Guantanamo-style torture.
Adding another agreement…
I’m okay with requiring a replay to do achievements. It’s like the Story/Explorable dungeon modes. It helps me focus on the story if I don’t have to worry about what sort of achievement I need to do. Plus it gets me familiar with the instance for when I do want to do the achievements. That’s all fine.
Just please, please, please either make the replayable instances drop us directly into the fight (let us walk up to trigger it) or give us an option when we join the instance to skip dialogue or not (like the path choices in explorable dungeons).
Making me sit through what was once good dialogue and story just makes me resent it when I’m forced to read it for the 20th time because I want to do something completely unrelated. I consider combat related achievements completely unrelated to the story they came from.
Jade Quarry
Agreed.
When waiting to do another attempt takes longer than that attempt. It gets old quick. Please add a npc to let us jump strait into fights after the first completion.

It would be really nice if the challenge mote had an additional option to simply skip to the next fight.

You should check out these things:
I’ve tolerated the repetition for achievement chasing in previous LS releases. Largely due to the fact that, as lame as it is to make the player sit through the same story sequence THREE TIMES (one time for the regular play through, and for many if not most of the sequences, at least twice more to get all the achievements) they’ve mostly erred on the side of brevity that just falls shy of head-desking. But the World Summit one? C’mon Anet. C’mon. I generally like the story. I have no problem going through it all once (though Anet should seriously take a page from other developers and make ALL cut-scene/dialogue content skippable at any time, in my opinion). The 5 solid minutes it takes just to get to the fight against the dragon in World Summit? Painful, just painful, especially when you fail an achieve and have to go through it all again. I don’t get it. It just seems lazy on Anet’s part and punishes the player unfairly for failing.

Not necessarily stupid. Sarcastic sure. Although it is a good example of argumentum ad absurdum.

This would be the better idea. Once completed give us the option to replay story more or replay achievement mode (i.e. no dialog).
Yeah a “Skip to combat” button would be great.
I’m trying to do the world summit achievements and 1 mistake and you have to spend 10 minutes waiting through the procession and then the dialogue.
It really kills the mood when you have to sit through things for the 4th time.
I won’t be serious about doing episode achievements until these things are changed:
- We can do achievements on first run.
- We can skip speaking/walking portions.
I’m okay with people who currently enjoy immersion and full replaying, but I’m myself not okay with artificial time sink which adds to gameplay nothing but frustration.
I don’t ask to be able to skip dialogues on the first go, I always read them and enjoy them most of the time, but I absolutely agree hearing them twice/more times should be entirely optional. I like the immersion we get from first run, but after I’m done and go for the achievements, this becomes pretty much an annoyance.
This reminds me of the achievement for stomping Scarlet. You couldn’t skip the cut scene…cause we didn’t hate her enough prior to that.
There’s really no point for the dialogue or scenes or whatever else steals time like a Skritt drunk on omnomberry juice.
I’d even settle for an alternate instance of the instance that was just for achievements if a skip button is too much work to slap in. A pop up box similar to dungeons for story mode/exp. Or just make the purple icon version of the place auto plop you in closest to combat. Something other than the current incarnation of pure insanity.
Unless this is what you guys meant by ‘harder’ achievements.
“Playing GUild wars 2” now basically goes like this:
start mission,
move to NPC#1,
alt-tab to firefox, browse forums/etc., while NPC#1 finishes her kittentalking
alt-tab to guild wars 2, move to NPC#2
go afk, get a coffee
back to the game, kittening NPC#2 is finally done.
i now can finally actually play the mission.
it really shouldnt be like that. im drinking way too much coffee cuase of that aswell.
unskippable dialogue/cutscenes are some of the worst sins you can commit when making a game and should be illegal. pairing that up with achievements that can be failed and require you to restart the mission is even worse.

YES! Please let us skip cut-scenes, especially when we need to repeat them! It’s not fun to be held hostage by these when playing through them again and again.
I don’t really understand.
People are fine with the mechanism to artificially lengthen the play time. Namely, the achievements being locked until after the first play through. People are fine with exclusive achievements requiring yet more play-throughs.
But you lose your patience for some repeated dialogue?
If I had my way, achievements would be awarded the very first time through. And you would also have the option to skip the dialogue if you have no interest in it.
Just that complaining about one without having a problem with the other… baffles me.

Its not that big problem because the first playthrough you can just enjoy the story and see what happens. The problem especially with “The World Summit” is that the dialogue and story takes 8-10minutes. This together with an achievement for “Challenge mode” for which you probably need a few tries if you don’t use a guide is a total no-go. I’m all for hard content and enjoyed SAB tribulation and Liandri (especially 8 orbs) but here you are just wasting time for nothing.
Agreed : having to watch the same dialogs N times is really a bad idea. First time you do the episode, have the dialogs unskippable. But when you redo that episode with N alt. and again 2 or 3 times for achievements, this really gets boring.
Please make all dialogs skippable (just a “click” on each dialog box to fade away the audio and show the next dialog box would be ok).

15 characters.
In the future, they should just split up instances like “The World Summit” into 2 parts: one with the dialogue and one with the action. That way there wouldn’t be any need to add complications like ‘skip’ buttons. We’d just go straight to the second instance for the achievements.

They can also put some kind of “fast forward mote” or “timewarp mote” in the instance to skip to the right part.
They should just make it so that, when replaying instances, all the dialogue that isn’t needed is cut out and you only have the fighting etc.
This would mean you still have the dialogue on your first playthrough with your characters, but it’s like this in the personal story too and I assume my idea is a bit easier to implement than doing it account-wide. But I’m not sure. I know I’d be fine with either.
I have to agree with this. The long dialogue is killing the fun doing the achievements. We already know all the conversations and stuffs during our first encounter with the story. Let us skip directly to the achievement part.
Or at least make the achievements have 3 or more chances before deactivating on failures so we don’t have to waste time logging off, running story again and waiting for NPCs to finish talking.

ROFL. This is gold. Thx man 9/10
I agree with whoever said that enduring all the dialog as many times as it takes is the true achievement. The dialog heavy instance achievements would be sooo much more fun to go after if there was a way to skip to the action.

They could also make the achievement instances start just before combat and end after combat.
- Party Politics > Start after you’re introduced, end after your last dialogue option.
- Summit > Start after you had the discussions with all the leaders
- …
Plus one please.
I’d like to support this. I don’t mind harder achievements and managed to get all S2 LS achievements yesterday, but especially in “World Summit” the dialogue gets irritating after the first attempt. Some mechanics to keep irrelevant dialogue to a minimum for those only interested in achievements would be very much appreciated. It would help achievement hunters to get more quality out of their ingame time.
Would be nice if they allowed us to do this… the first attempt i can understand, but once you’ve completed the story portion of it, you should be allowed to skip all dialogue / cinematic if you wanted too..

While I agree that it should be skipable, can’t we also argue that the player base should respect the time and resources the devs and writers have spent on getting that dialogue into the game?

We want this only for achievement runs. No one who likes the lore minds the dialogue while playing through it normally. Those who do listen to it once anyway. So this isn’t disrespecting in any form imo.

The answer to your question is Yes. We should respect them.
(Yes… I’m sure. you can trust me.)
But that doesn’t mean we have to play theirs game by spent 70% of the time watching the same thing over and over.
Repeatedly is an issue. Not even one comment here want to skip at first try.
YES! Please let us skip cut-scenes, especially when we need to repeat them! It’s not fun to be held hostage by these when playing through them again and again.
Or add a retry button that resets the fight allowing you to attempt the achievement again? (could potentially be easier for them to implement?)
It took me 4 attempts before I got all the achievements for the World Summit. Took me about an hour, so it wasn’t too bad, but I do agree that a “Skip straight to boss battle” option would have been really nice, even though I understand how that would be “story flow disrupting”.
We need also a button to skip the fights. It is very annoying to have boring fights until you can follow the next dialog.
In the case of instances where the achievements don’t pertain to combat, this should be allowed too. If players are replaying the instance, it’s presumably for the achievements – If that’s not the case, they can always elect NOT to skip to the relevant bits. But the option should always be there.

That’s my way of playing GW2. I don’t care for the characters and their talk. This forced story makes me care even less for it, so I don’t even want to know about it in the next quests. Skip, skip, skip! Let me have fun and stop wasting my time, ANet!
would be nice to have the skip option after beating it once (account-wise).

I think anyone at Anet who has the ability to add an option to skip dialogues probably skipped right over this thread because in 7 days it’s less than 1 page.
Funny how they reserve the right to skip over the stuff that is boring to them though huh?

I agree, its really annoying to sit through all the dialogue. but you cant even afk through it all because you have to move 10 spaces forward to start the next dialogue. so walk to the circle, AFK a few minutes, walk to the next circle, afk a few minutes.
I don’t really understand.
People are fine with the mechanism to artificially lengthen the play time. Namely, the achievements being locked until after the first play through. People are fine with exclusive achievements requiring yet more play-throughs.

Well people don’t really recognise time lengthening mechanics until they hit time lengthening mechanics that they don’t like. Or (as is particularly the case here) the nature of the time length (the dialogue) isn’t interactive, thus the lack of interaction provides more time for player to think and thinking is not usually advised in most forms of entertainment.

Judging from the present game mechanics this would probably require less work. It would however somewhat break up the pace a bit, having to jump in and out of instances is also rather inconvenient. Rather simply create a whole separate instance that unlocks after first playthrough which is achievement only (which hopefully will one day be more than simply combat or scavenger hunting) focused.
They should just make it so that, when replaying instances, all the dialogue that isn’t needed is cut out and you only have the fighting etc.
Although some of us might actually want to experience the dialogue a few more times. So it would actually be better to having 2 repayable instances (story and achievement).
They could also make the achievement instances start just before combat and end after combat.
- Party Politics > Start after you’re introduced, end after your last dialogue option.
- Summit > Start after you had the discussions with all the leaders

Probably the easiest to implement but again pacing is sacrificed with the hoping in and out of instances. Well if done well perhaps…

If the story skip function is unlocked after completing the episode (and is limited only to those instances like summit as some instances are almost purely dialog).

Well you are building arguments on top of assumptions so might want to check out the Toulmin model. Very easy to apply. In your case your warrant is questionable.
We need also a button to skip the fights. It is very annoying to have boring fights until you can follow the next dialog.
Stupid comment. Hearing same dialog second time is waste of time, there should be button to skip dialogs.
Maybe the story-favoring people think that about the combat.
Living Story. There it is, right in the name: “Story”. You want combat with no dialogue, run around in the Edge of the Mists. Nonstop fighting, all the time.
This is an RPG. There will be action, and there will be story. You cannot have one without the other. It would then become either an action game, or a graphic novel.
I never was a big fan of the parts where characters are using dialog bubbles and you can’t skip through it if you’re uninterested in the story at the time (or have seen it before).
I think this is just an unfortunate consequence of them doing lower-budget bubbles instead of creating full cinematics. Perhaps they could add an extra dialog option that appears at the bottom of conversations such as these? Would read something like, “Skip dialogue.” Not unlike the button in the cinematics.
For example, with the summit, it could skip to the next part where you’re operating the podium. That way if you misclick, you aren’t missing everything at once.
