From the recent news post:
“The road to war is paved by points of no return. Tyria has already decided to take the battle to Mordremoth. As we go on this journey we’ll learn dark secrets of Tyria’s past, venture into stories with roots deep in the very heart of Guild Wars lore, and visit places that have only been rumored to exist.”

As a long-time Guild Wars fan, I am happy to see what I feel is a continued improvement in the content of this franchise. I loved the lore and the individualized, instanced plot in the original Guild Wars, and I’m glad that similar elements are making a slow (but hopefully assured) return in Guild Wars 2. Tying in ancient lore from the original series can enhance the experience of veteran players and create a deeper feeling to the story.

I know many of us have been complaining about the arc of the living story – particularly the first season – but it is definitely on the rise in quality this time around. Thank you, ArenaNet, for listening to your long-time fans. Here’s to continued improvement and no looking back!

I’m hoping that you don’t actually get to defeat Mordremoth at the end of the season. I think it’s still too early to be taking down another elder dragon. What would be nice is a climactic battle with one of Mordremoth’s champions. It could even be the Shadow of a Dragon again except with new and interesting mechanics.

Or a fight against Mordremoth that actually results in a failure! (due to some unforeseen event or whatever)

I agree. It would become rather lame and predictable if ArenaNet have us routinely and successfully knocking off an elder dragon one after another each season until they’re all gone. I enjoyed the organic feel of the GW1 stories, where unexpected plot devices would suddenly require the player character to go on a far-reaching, dangerous quest (e.g. Crystal Desert ascension or befriending the Luxons/Kurzicks).

Repairing the damage caused by the awakening of an elder dragon could be a pretty good story for implementing bigger changes. And defeating it so soon would not be an “unforgettable end” so we’re kinde safe from that.

I believe is is best to kill the dragon and move towards new areas in the story. Its been a year already and dragging the dragons to an additional year will make the plot feel stale. We had Zaitan and then another dragon for 2 years?
Its best for LS 3 to focus on the human Gods. Preferably Balthazar or Dwayna. If Anet keeps running away scared from the Gods then GW2 will never show its full potential.

You can’t kill an elder dragon, just like you can’t kill magic.

Zhaitan was defeated. That’s not the same as being killed. He was basically neutralize but he’s not dead.

Abaddon isn’t an elder dragon. He was imprisoned and his life ended. His power went into Kormir who became the Goddess of Truth using a power that had been granted to her by the Five Gods.

I forsee a major fight with the Shadow of the Dragon at the end of the season. The fight will ultimately end with what seems to be our failure only for a shadowy figure comes out and casts an ancient spells that turns the tide of battle winning us the fight against the Shadow of the Dragon. This figure then reveals herself to be Livia, who will lead the pact as Trahearn has been slain during the battle. In the end, Mordremoth arises with a sweet cinematic showing the destruction and change in all the lands he effects changing Tyria to a point of no return. This then leads to an announcement of an Expansion.

One can only dream.

The Gods have left Tyria, they’re never coming back again, and you seem forget that between Zhaitan and Mordremoth we had Scarlet(not that I did LS S1, but she was in between the 2 Elder Dragons, and 4 are left to defeat(read: put back to sleep). They can do and come up with anything for LS S3, not just another Elder Dragon or the Gods, there is plenty in the lore that they can pull from.

Zhaitan was defeated. That’s not the same as being killed. He was basically neutralize but he’s not dead.

Canonically, Zhaitan is dead. The ‘Shard of Zhaitan’ dungeon token used to (and possibly still does, I can’t be bothered logging in just to check right now) have a description reading ‘a piece of Zhaitan, forever dead’. There are a few theories floating around that he’s not really dead, but they’re only theories, and most of them are actually motivated by ’wouldn’t it be good to have a final battle with Zhaitan that’s not just press 2 to win’?

There’s no evidence that dragons can’t be killed as magic can’t be killed – they’re magical creatures and thaumovores, but they aren’t magic per se. Meanwhile, we have evidence elsewhere that the dragons are killable (Glint in Edge of Destiny presumably knows her stuff there). If anything, they seem to be easier to kill than gods – Abaddon had his body destroyed before he was imprisoned in the Realm of Torment and survived that, and possibly would have reconstituted again if Kormir hadn’t absorbed his power. A dead dragon just seems to… die, and leave a magical corpse that can be harvested.

The Gods have left Tyria, they’re never coming back again,

{citation needed}

Less flippantly, while the gods have left and their role in the world has been reduced, this does not preclude them playing parts in future arcs. I suspect, in fact, that Rytlock has ended up in the Underworld.

Incidentally, regarding Scarlet: while it was hidden for most of season 1, Scarlet did ultimately prove to be part of the dragon plotline.

To those who think Scarlet hate means she’s succeeded as a villain:
People don’t hate Scarlet like Game of Thrones fans hate Joffrey.
They hate her the way Star Wars fans hate Jar Jar Binks.

Yeah, that`s what I am seeing as well.

however, as Season 2 is nearly over (with only a few Episodes left, if the first half was any indication), than we won`t get a conclusion to the Mordremoth storyline (which would also be stupid, since it would be a too easy and too quick wrap up)

The roadmap they laid out for this season is quite obvious and annoyingly brushed over in strades, that it sucked all the enjoyment out for me at the moment.
I really hope they get their mojo back or something, because right now the pacing is just terrible…

As for the roadmap, here are the goals for these season:
- Introduce Mordremoth, check
- Introduce another “Mystery”, check
- Involve the Sylvari, check
- Wrap/Make up some Biconic issues, check
- Finish off Scarlets part, check
- Unite the races, partly check
- Take the fight to Mordremoth
- Fail/Win a fight against Mordremoth, or another faction that pops up
- Cliffhanger into Season 3/Expansion/Me leaving the game (last one unlikely, but it is still in an option with my current disapointed mindset)

cough Abaddon cough Zaitan cough

Time to put my lore nerd cap on. Abaddon was surely killed but his magic still remained, and had to be transferred to Komir. Zaitan was killed but there some (fan theories) that his magic was transferred to Tequatl. This it would be more accurate to say that although the individual in which the power resides can be killed the power that defined them (in the case of an ED the power that made them a ED) does not die with them.
