RNG Boxes, Tickets, and Tokens
simple: RNG makes more money. Areanet produced this wonderful MMO to make money. RNG boxes are how they monetize it.
RNG = more money. There seems to be more people willing to gamble on RNG items than farmers/hardcore players to beat hard content or farm ‘’hard-er’’ content and receive items for their achivements.
GW2 is now a casual player haven. So, RNG is a better system.
My opinion on this issue (From the Jade Weapon thread):
How about instead of exclusively using RNG boxes dropped by an RNG loot system (2x the RNG), they also add the weapon skins themselves to the loot tables as a rare drop across all of Tyria for the duration of the event and have the ones that drop in that particular manner able to be traded on the TP?
This way ANet can still make money on the RNG boxes for those who enjoy them and normal players can still farm their way to the gold required to purchase the skin.
Normally, I’d agree with what some of the people saying to just put the skins on the gem store, but they’d probably need to price them each at $20+ to make the same amount of money they are on the chests, a decision, which, I’m sure, would only lead to more discussions of this manner.

Personally, I refuse to play the RNG box game. I have terrible luck. There’s no way I’m paying real money to gamble for digital items.
Flame and Frost introduced pay for weapon skins. I didn’t really like most of them except the quiver, so I bought that. I also bought the molten pick and harvesting sickle. I don’t mind paying for items like that. It just always seems that the items I would be willing to pay real $ for cost astronomical amounts, or random amounts.
I don’t really like using the mystic forge either. I get junk. I’d rather sell my rares for guaranteed amounts of silver/gold and buy exotics.
You know what would be nice IMO?
If the boxes would drop two kinds of token. One token would be the extremely rare (that already exists) and that would be traded for the skin, 1 for 1, and another one that would be more common and that would drop from every box (maybe every box having a chance of dropping 5~15 of these tokens), and you could use a bunch of them (let’s say, 250) to trade for a skin.
Still RNG, people would still buy a bunch of boxes but at last you would have some kind of progression and would know when you were getting close to get a skin (by having enough tokens) AND you still would be able to randomly get the rare token.

My ideal way of aquiring skins is the way they did it in GW1…you had to EARN them either by killing the boss who carries it or paying in-game funds for in-game items.
Sine they are going the RNG way, I will probably not invest in those skins unless I happen to get a lucky drop from some mob.
I don’t mind the gem store for “town clothes” or fuzzy backpacks. I don’t mind buying transmute stones/crystals nor do I mind the services such as server transfers.
But A-net needs to separate the two. Don’t sell something in the store that has no better RNG chance than something in-game. If I am to pay real money for something, then give me something for the real money I am paying.
(Edit: You didn’t get skins specifically from bosses in GW1… You got specific named weapons, each with its own skin and “extra” stats. The armor skins were vendored for specific amounts of in-game items and money)

I have seen many threads about RNG system of boxes as the only means of acquiring weapon tickets and rare content specific items from the Living World content.
When the game was released, a token system was used with dungeons; after acquiring enough tokens, you may purchase varying amount of style specific items and armor.
I liked the system in the first Guild Wars personally, where tokens such as Jade Wind Orbs or Zaishen Coins allowed players to pick and choose what they wanted and allowed everyone to enjoy content specific items while letting hardcore players work toward top tier items.
For the developers, why did you decide to switch to a system of RNG style boxes for ingame content?
For players, what is your opinion on the RNG system currently in place? Do you think it is hurting the player base at all?
Which type of reward system do you prefer?
As a player the answer is obivious. The RNG style boxes has been erodding the player base. Its been hurting us all. Any who thinks otherwise are truly just fooling themselves. I have yet to meet in any game while playing who actually likes this stuff let alone willing to put up with it. The whole thing is the worse sort of money scam and any player who defends this practice are truly clueless. Sure, A.Net has the right to make money, but as a customer, we have the right to be treated fairly for the money in which with these RNG box scam, we are not. I honestly cannot any longer suggest this game to my friends anymore.
I do not like this RNG gift box lottery system that ANet has been using for the last few events. I have not and will not participate in it, since I don’t believe this type of gambling should be in the game. I didn’t post with the previous events, but since this seems to be a direction that the company is continue to explore, I thought it was time to speak up.
Please just place the skins on the TC, price them where you think they will sell (and which will allow you to make a similar amount of profit as the RNG box system), and be done with it. All this gambling on boxes with an undisclosed small chance of winning a ticket to redeem for a skin is ridiculous and doesn’t belong in a game that has been marketed to a wide age range of players.
Could ANet at least officially publish the numerical odds/chances of winning, so that people can make an informed choice when they spend their in game or real life money on them?
