If he had been who he claimed to be, combined with the Ep2 hints about the mursaat’s all-out villainy being at least partly a “the winners write history” thing, it might have been interesting to see a “gray” mursaat proving himself as a (questionable) ally.

But if he was Balthazar all along, doesn’t give a toss about Tyria and just wants power, why not just gobble up the little bite-sized package of dragon energy, especially since she may otherwise grow up to be a problem? What did he gain from “helping” us? It’s not as if his actions at her hatching made us trust him with our plans or even a rusty old horseshoe — he still had to barge in uninvited to nab the big plot device.

Why? Because he wanted to earn our trust. Perhaps he wanted to check how much energy she has, anyway he is a god so he knows everything. And when he noticed that Aurene has not enough energy to restore his power, he wanted to earn our trust as I said before.

Then the lies popped up, he lied to everybody. It’s not a god, it’s a liar.

I think this is why other gods have to appear to say what is going on with Balthazar. Is he corrupted by Bloodstone?

But he didn’t actually gain our trust, or anything else for that matter — except for an unwelcome tagalong who spotted his mirror, which allowed Kasmeer to promptly unmask him. Hardly beneficial for him, even if he never intended to pose as Lazarus for long. If the deception had gone on for long enough, and we had interacted with him enough to at least grudgingly trust him, if he had managed to make himself somehow indispensable for our plans so he “had to” be given access to the lab and everything else — then it would have been a very smart move. But as it is, I don’t see what he accomplished for himself.

In retrospect, it now feels as if he was shoehorned into that scene just so we don’t forget he’s supposed to be a Big Deal for a story that juggles too many balls to really give any of them the treatment they deserve.

Seems to me that Balthazar wanted access to our tools for fighting dragons — he wanted to be the one to defeat them. To do that, he needed to string us along.

Mind you, the big reveal seemed to undermine itself when it was so easily resolved — the Big B went down faster than a cattle rustler caught at a rodeo. Or as the Skritt Burglar says, “plan failed!”

Maybe he was so weak from the draining of his magic that he couldn’t come up with an actual, you know, plan?

Or maybe he didn’t have any control over much other than his disguise. After all, the Mantle were trying to summon Lazarus — maybe B was pulled out of the Mists and couldn’t come up with anything better than “the enemy of my enemy is… well, let’s see what happens.”

His plan was foiled for now, but since he just disappeared into the mists, who knows what he might do next. I’m interested in the larger turn from killing dragons to neutralizing them, and what that will mean for the future story. From now on are we focused on keeping them alive, but asleep, except for Aurene? That actually opens many more future possibilities; an endless parade of baddies like Balthazar who want to kill the dragons or somehow take their power.

We never saw the body. Also, we know that Lyssa is also in on this, from the mirror sequence. So … it’s not impossible he just waypointed out, instead of death, IMO, and even if we did pop him off, we got five other gods with at least one “involved” in the situation actively…

To earn the Commander’s trust for access to the dragons, also so he can later harvest Aurene’s magical powers?

OP, I think it is only a matter of role playing as a puppet master. He used both party (us and the white mantle) just to gain his powers back.

That’s my read of the situation. Combined with the annoyance that our spy reported on the activities they wanted to keep hidden, and that we didn’t share the existence of the machine with them. Kittened off that their deception didn’t work out.

The eventual explanation will not be satisfying, as they forced everything to fit just so they could have a ‘shocking’ reveal. I still hope they fill in the explanations, as it will help. It feels too similar to season 1, where things only really made sense posthumously and by that time the bad impression was already made.

Just providing alternative, but assuming Lyssa is in on it just because of a mirror might be preemptive. Balth’s says something along the lines of “They laughed at me” or something which implies that there may be some sort of god vs god conflict going on. For all we could know, Balth picked a fight with Lyssa, pillaged the mirror and left on this quest to get more power.

Again, he doesn’t “earn” anything, and IMO it would be complete nonsense for him to think that this particular form could inspire trust in anyone anytime soon. Nor does he seem to need our trust or our permission in any way, since he manages to just barge in on both the hatching and Taimi’s experiment without so much as a “please and thank you”. He can go wherever he wants and we can’t stop him, and he clearly has some independent way of staying informed of what we’re doing.

It just baffles me.

Aurene can potentially become an elder dragon herself. He could potentially use her to wage war on the other gods (if the theory of them overthrowing him stands) He also wanted to clear any suspition we had so he could do what ever he wanted without us going after him all the time. Also we have prove ourselves as powerful force and a fallen god would need acess to what we could offer (at elast an opening) which he got, a way to absorb the power of an elder dragon and basically get again his god like powers(?)

I think people are right that he was trying to gain our trust. The fact that it didn’t work doesn’t change that – people try things all the time that don’t work, that doesn’t mean they were never really trying, just that they failed.

He apparently wants to destroy the dragons and absorb their power. The people who killed the last dragon probably seem like good allies to recruit to his cause, especially since one of them has killed 2 dragons and especially when they also have a baby dragon on their side.

Also considering he’s one of the human gods I suspect he may be out of practice at actually persuading people. It’s probably been a very long time since he’s had to do more than show up and make demands to get people to do what he wanted, and since he’s the god of war persuasion probably isn’t his strong suite to begin with. He probably expected the same reaction he got from the White Mantle. Instead he got suspicion and distrust and apparently decided we weren’t worth the hassle.

Maybe he planned to come back to us later or work on us gradually over time. Maybe he thought Marjory was enough, or she could bring the rest of the ground around. Maybe he just decided he could get easier allies elsewhere and it probably didn’t matter too much which mortals were helping him.

Why? Because he wanted to earn our trust. Perhaps he wanted to check how much energy she has, anyway he is a god so he knows everything. And when he noticed that Aurene has not enough energy to restore his power, he wanted to earn our trust as I said before.

Actually he’s a god in a polytheistic pantheon which means he almost certainly does not know everything. Outside of Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity, Islam etc.) the idea of an omnipotent god is fairly unusual, and the ones who are capable of knowing everything usually have serious limitations that make their ability impractical.

A huge amount of mythology, particularly Greek, Roman and Norse (or those might just be the ones I’m most familiar with) concerns situations that arise specifically because a god doesn’t know everything that’s going on, often because they’re being tricked by another god.

Likewise they’re not infallible and often make mistakes (if in doubt see Zeus) and their powers usually have very specific domains and limitations.
