I Just read Johanson’s statement about “Living World” …and I have to give him credit…

He wrote this amazing essay telling about bunch of stuff, yet actually saying nothing.

He talked about things that aren’t anything new or innovative …. He mentioned instances available for certain period of time, then removing them later on …. and so on and so on…
All the things that we saw already in more games then one…

(Among others) This sentence really bugs me :
“We want to make this a much bigger part of where Gw2 goes in the future, to give a sense that the world truly can change constantly as you’re playing and every time you login.”

For someone like me who logs in every couple of months, this may be true …but exactly how much …

To me difference isn’t something that I will never visit or am not interested in…
Like adding new dungeon ….we already have >30 … (Dungeons + fractals)
1 more won’t be noticed -.-" (Nor will there be a need to finish it)

To me difference is when an old map completely (or at least few maps semi-completely) changes.
When I can say …

  • Oh look, a Dragon came to this area and really made a mess here (all new Vistas/Hearts/PoI ) …That’s new
  • Wasn’t there a lake here before
  • Old man said go over the mountain …. WHERE’S THE MOUNTAIN ???
  • Was this fortress always here… o.O ?

Will this “Living World” be more like I want …or just :
Here’s new dungeon that disappears in 2 weeks, have fun!
Here’s a new jumping puzzle for 2 weeks
OMG We gave you a few new NPC’s in town!!!
Here’s a new dungeon here to stay ..that you really have no need of doing…
-.-" :/

So… What will it be ? o.O

You’re not completly right. A new temporaly dungeon would be part of a living world if it leaves marks to the actual world. For example, at halloween, we had a pretty cool boss dungeon, it was really fun and it had an impact on lion’s arch. It was really awesome and fun, maybe you didn’t like it because you don’t notice new dungeons, but most of the players enjoyed it.

You really would want new Hearts? And… That would also mean all previous hearts disappear… That’s not fun at all – why would you destroy something to never come back? And what about my map completion achievement? Would it reset? That would be bad. Would it stayed as it was? Also bad… Why to bother with more hearts that does not count to map completion?

  • Wasn’t there a lake here before
  • Old man said go over the mountain …. WHERE’S THE MOUNTAIN ???

What… How would you destroy a mountain?? And what about it? Who would care?

  • Was this fortress always here… o.O ?

Ok, so you wan’t permanent dungeons right? They’ve added fractals (was this portal always here?) and mazes for Guild Puzzle Missions and some mini dungeons (was it here before? Nope…).

Will this “Living World” be more like I want …or just :

That’s just not fair! They’ve a bunch of stuff that have stayed in the game.

OMG We gave you a few new NPC’s in town!!!

They’ve already added whole island so that’s unfair either – that had it’s trees cut down and settlements build upon(and nobody cared about that).

Here’s a new dungeon here to stay ..that you really have no need of doing…

This is major problem of the game right now… There is no sense of achievement in the game. The rest of your statement is just unfair or false.

New Hearts/Vistas and reset :

  • Hell YEAH …otherwise when you complete a MAP (which this game has only a handfull ) why would you EVER GO BACK ? New Vistas/Hearts and Map Completion rewards might make you want to go back ^^

  • Dragon/Asura/Chars, really anyone can destroy anything and everything …. play GW1, you’ll see what Chars could do 252 years ago
  • I said bla bla Lake, bla bla Mountain as a contest of a remade/overhauled MAP

Fractals/Mazes :

  • Fractals are for lifeless grinders and Mazes for big Guilds …what’s with the other 50% of the Community o.O ?
  • We get nothing ?

People go back to places for rewords or other reasons! Not for some heart tasks.

The only mistake that ANet did was to make leveling so easy and fast. That’s why maps are underused.

I hate map completion for the sake of making a map interesting. It never should have been in the game in my opinion. People just play tag with every objective and never really see what the place has to offer. The events are what sets the mood of an area, the new events in Diessa and Wayfarer are the best examples so far.

Karka island: new stats with new crafting materials, new cooking recipes, new jumping puzzles. To be honest, it’s still my favourite place to go simply because people don’t bother you that they can’t find any events. (learn to roam already lol)

Fractals isn’t just for lifeless grinders, you can enjoy the content once or twice if you like to. The people that don’t do fractals are most likely also not doing dungeons. And if they are doing dungeon and not fractals, then they’re missing out, because they can’t get their head around misconceptions and prejudices. Fractals has the best dungeon experiences so far.

Sadly, Christmas and halloween aren’t all year long celebrations. You cannot let the dungeons of those stay on forever.

And since youre blind as a ..dredge not seeing mountains disappear and cities arise:

I agree with the OP. This is not a living world. In fact, it was funny when I was standing there looking through my controls. This npc kept saying the same thing to another npc over and over and over and over. I bet if I go back there, those npc’s will still be there and the same thing will still be said. Those NPC are there 24/7 never sleeping or eating. Just hanging out repeating the same dialog over and over.

I know AI is limited but to be honest, despite developers talking about new break throughs in AI with their games, I haven’t noticed a difference in AI in over a decade.

When I first read about the game, I was under the impression we can choose sides in a situation. If a bunch of bandits were attacking a town, we could help defend the town or we could help the bandits take the town. Instead we are forced to play the “good guy” in every situation.

Also there is no consequence. Our actions have no real impact. So the bandits attack the town and now you are either successful at defending or you fail. If you fail, the bandits take over the town. You can then later fight to take it back. If you are successful at defending it, the bandits will later try again. These events are nothing more than a tug-o-war and are not very elaborate nor deep.

I think what is really holding developers back is that they feel that there is this need for every person to be able to experience the exact same content. As long as they feel that they have to do this, then they can never ever create a game world that actually advances through time.

Eg. You clear a cave out of baby spiders, and finish by killing their mother (boss) deep inside. The spiders shouldn’t spawn again. The cave is now empty. Only after some time, that cave may become a haven for some bandits or a cave troll might make it a new home. That cave troll could then be a champion boss. Players come by and kill this troll, and the cave is now empty again. In a couple hours that cave may then become a den for a pack of wolves.

Part of a world that actually changes and advances is the concept of “right place, right time” and in this game, that simply doesn’t exist because if you are late for an event, all you have to do is wait and the event will happen again.

Rather than having a story line that each person can experience individually, they should just make the open world itself the story line. A story line that advances regardless if you are logged in or not. That doesn’t mean that everybody has to be all at one place at one time to experience the “story line” because the “story line” isn’t between a handful of characters at a specific location and time. The “story line” is the world itself in its entirety.

Since AI is too limited to do this in an automated manner, this is where the developers stop being game designers and start the role of a “puppet master” where the npcs of the game are the puppets and the game world is the stage. Events happen all over, are forecast so people can plan where they want to be. People will have to make choices as events would happen at overlapping times and/or multiple events would happen at the same time all at different location. Events are developed and run once, with an actual change depending on the outcome. If you miss a particular event, oh well. You’ll just have to make sure you don’t miss the next one that interests you because the one you missed is now part of the past and won’t be replayed again.

NPCs would then only need to be given a daily routine to follow when not following an event script. The game has a day/night cycle. NPCs should have a 24 hour automated cycle of sleeping, working, eating, partaking in local gossip which should cover recent events as common topics so as events come and go, what these people talk about changes.

Much of that automated AI has been done by Bethesda.

Let’s take a look at those heart quests. You clean up a pond, set traps, revive fishermen and kill off hostile creatures. Every player will do that exact thing for the same NPC as everyone else. It doesn’t stay cleaned up. The fishermen don’t stay revived unless you constantly fight off a respawning creatures. Those creatures don’t stay dead.

Action without consequence. A world that is really frozen in time.

I’m not sure how it is realistically expected that every NPC has a (albeit limited) life to live out. The fact that they even have some relevant convos that are voice acted is astounding. It’s the illusion of a living world. Same goes for the events, sure things reset, and even the high impact events are a tug of war, but I’m not sure how you can expect content creators to churn so much content out, that you can have old events replaced by new ones.

There’s also the issue of newer players coming in and areas becoming inconsistent with the personal story etc. I know that this could be always solved with more content creation, but when we’re talking about a no subscription MMO, that in many ways has more content than a sub MMO, I fail to see how that’s reasonable. I like what their doing, with that said, obviously the game is not free of criticism but some of the stuff written here is just unreasonable.

As far as the cynical, playing tag with points of interests. Yes sometimes I just run there, but sometimes I really take in the atmopshere and the lore of the area. It’s all up to you, if you want to take a step back and appreciate what that content really means. Play with people who share this sentiment, at some level you gotta make your own fun, instead of expecting anet to bully you into appreciating the content more.

At the end of the day I enjoy the content, if you hate it, then stop playing, you can always come back.

The only way an MMO can be “truly” living breathing if the change is player authored, the change is social and political, not a mountain model being changed out or a story node added. In that way EVE probably is more living breathing(and possibly the upcoming World of Darkness MMO, pen and paper Vampire is all about politics). As long as MMOs aren’t played by everyone and their dog, there’ll never be enough money in them to have the world “fully living breathing”. ANET should improve the game and add more engaging content, but the change can only be incrimental. Some single player RPGs may outdo GW2 in some areas, but there’s only a million and one more things GW2 has to do to be a complete MMO.

Personally I like the idea.

They always gave the impression that the Elder Dragons are like a force of nature (primordial force I believe they called them).

Zaithan lifted a nation from the ocean floor.
Jormag shattered mountains in the Shiverpeaks an created inland seas.
Kralkatorrik created the Dragon Brand just by flying over the area and breathing on it.

Is it so hard to imagine them causing some destruction around Tyria? Or that their Lieutenants (none of which are even close to small) can cause some havoc in the different areas? At the moment it’s rather stale in it’s current form:

You see/hear the dragon flying around in the sky above, a few events happen, it lands, you shoot it, it dies.

And let’s not even talk about the fight with Zaithan.

Make it more entertaining. Make some dynamic events that are actually dynamic! At the very least create some DE’s where the dragons unexpectedly attack some of the other strongholds at random that then needs to be defended or something. I would love it if you were to enter the Black Citadel and see chaos everywhere after the Shatterer launched an assault there. Or to enter the Iron Marches only to be notified it’s currently being invaded, with DE’s popping up all over the place.

A shifting environment does not necessarily mean you need to mess with the Explorer achievement, but at least make it fun to to re-explore an area. If a heart is completed then it stays completed, and if a PoI is discovered is stays discovered. The objectives might change a bit, from gather A and killing B it shifts to rebuilding C and defending from D. PoI can be renamed according to what happened there, “Tower A” becoming “Ruins of Tower A”, etc.

The same with DE’s. Before the attack, one of them might be “Escort supplies caravan from fort A to fort B”. Fort A gets destroyed during the attack, so now fort B is short on supplies and some of the local threats are trying to take it over, so the DE becomes “Defend fort B”.

They have this vast, beautiful world they created and forces powerful enough to reshape it, the current state of the game seems like a wasted potential when you consider the possibilities.

When isle of fire or any new map enlargement will be released, can you explain me why you have map completition with a 100% , the star on login and the reward, while who log later when expansions are online have to do the triple of the work? Why you have 100% map completition if you miss half of the new map released , logging back 2 years later? Nothing changed and you are worthy of map completition valid just during the period you logged. Idiot design huh?
Yes, the entire map should be dynamical and even no more available or expanded.
This is a living world.
That Johanson’s post was just a PR announcement, i quoted him asking explanations, don’t expect an answer

This is major problem of the game right now… There is no sense of achievement in the game.

Having been a part of an MMO that had actual living story- with live actor NPCs, and when something happened to the world, it stayed changed, the OP has it exactly right.

The only way you can make a true Living World, is by having the courage to not only add new content, but make story based permanant changes to existing content, that are based not only on NPC experiences, but on what the players do.

Maybe it starts small, like there being a drop in bandits in Queensdale, because we keep killing them all off… but a new threat replaces them. Maybe the effects of the Thaumanova Reactor meltdown start showing up in random other locations around the world.

Or go bigger- the Svanir Shaman at the Maw comes up with plan B, since we keep thwarting plan A… The Shatterer brings in backup… The Priory actually manages to hold Dredgehaunt for a few days, instead of 20 minutes, and finds something major.

Or go truly dynamic… and have something where the first set of players to do it (like defeat a boss, or open a new area), changes the world for everyone else. A random band of adventurers triggers a landslide, but now there’s a whole new area to explore? That’s living story.

Does it mean some people will have acheivements you can’t get anymore? Or have to do something different than before to get? Yup. And that’s part of what makes it living and dynamic- things change over time, which means needs change, and goals change.

If ANet has the guts to do something that unique, it would make the game something really special, and not (as much as they have succeeded in pulling it away from this reality) just another RPG that we happen to be running around in at the same time.

I can kind of see what the OP means.

It’s one thing to have constantly new content for players to enjoy without spreading them so thin like GW1 did up until after Eye of the North (with the BMP and then Beyond fixing that), however it’s something completely different when you remove all of that “new” content after some time.

I can see the desire and want for a living story, but if you think about it…

  1. It’s not very cost effective, as everything you make won’t be available for new players to go through in the future – thus to them it’s as if it was never made.
  2. There’s no real need to remove them except to give the implication of a “continuously changing story” – however you still retain everything from release. That makes sense… how?

If Anet really wants a “living, breathing, world” then they need to also work on eventually replacing the stuff that’s been around since release. HOWEVER, I don’t want this. I think having a “living, breathing, world” is the wrong direction – albeit perfectly reasonable, viable, and understandable – to take for an MMO. For two main reasons: 1) New players won’t experience the game as it was made to be originally. For example, say you go and replace some bits of Orr to start showing how it got cleansed – New Player A goes through the personal storyline. Zhaitan’s a big threat, Orr’s fully corrupted… but only in the personal storyline. When they exit that, you start getting “Zhaitan is dead!” in either looks, feel, or words. 2) New players will miss exciting things that are “one time events” (even if that “one time” is “for a full month”) – for example, take the Ancient Karka. New players will see the corpse and just go “so there was an epic battle in the game’s background?” never knowing – or being able to experience – the plight the Lionguard had against the karka invasion, being unable to experience it, since Anet removed all that content.

The OP never mentioned removing hearts.

I personally wouldn’t want new hearts unless the area is devoid of them – though it would give folks new things to do. I’d rather have new events, skill challenges, open-world mini-dungeons, vistas, and jumping puzzles.

ATM, the only place I’d like some hearts added would be Southsun Cove – cuz that places need anything to make it more interesting than the, what, 4 events?

That’s just not fair! They’ve a bunch of stuff that have stayed in the game.

The living story started in Janruary – we’ve been told that all of the early Flame and Frost content will be removed. Meaning those streams of refugees, the camps, the Lost and Found achievement – possibly even this month’s content will never be available in the future.

The Lost Shores – which gave the content you kept using as an example (Fractals), is not part of the Living Story. So you saying the OP’s statements are unfair is wrong because your claims for the things that stayed are not of the Living Story.

Though they did remove a lot of The Lost Shore’s content – from the LA invasions, even on Garrenhoff and Morgan’s Spiral (did they really need to do that?) and the scavenger hunts, and the meta event which held half of the islands’ events, and finally the Ancient Karka fight. And that’s so much that new players will never experience and many will never even know about.

In short: if they’re going to do a living story (which I’ll disagree with but go along with), they need to do it fully – not half kitten it with “it only counts to new content!” like they are now. Though the personal story kind of screws the ability to do that over a tad bit.

Dear ANet writers,
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

So... will it really be "Living World" ?

Preconceptions :
Yes, I had preconceptions …

  • I hoped my class wouldn’t be mostly broken at game’s release and utterly nerfed to the ground ..and in 9 months have 1 viable Build XD
  • I hoped for amazing and innovative armor …soo much for that ( 9 months ..Light armor still has ONE PANTS )
  • I hoped for interesting and diverse character creation … 80% of Human Females (including me) have the same hair/face
  • Better Graphics ofc …
  • Better PvE (more involving with consequences, not just poorly designed repetitive Events OVER and OVER and OVER AGAIN …. )
  • Roles (no need for traditional trinity but at least SOMETHING …. Currently your role is to
    1. Damage
    2. Survive
    3. Resurrect (optional)
  • SPvP connected to PvE
    ( 1. JQ -> Zaishen Keys > Gold )
    (2. JQ -> Balthazar -> Unlock new Skills / Elites)
  • EDIT : And I Hoped that classes wouldn’t HEAL THEIR ENEMIES WITH THEIR SKILLS/TRAITS … In GW2 … guess Everything is possible

I admit I expected WvW to be just boring zerging around no matter how much they diviniezed it

PS. I have played Aion for few years now …have 8 Characters (some pretty, some chiby, some sexy etc) .. In those years I have NEVER SEEN Characters similar to mine…

I must confess that I too have been expecting a bit more from this ‘Living World’-thing than it is right now. I’d like to see more influence of the story worked throughout the maps. I don’t think that maps need to get overhauled completely, but if something big is happening you should see it in the world.

I also thought that, when I bought this game, my choices would influence the world. I understand that this is pretty hard to put into a game since everybody makes different choices, but take the event at the Wardenlight Tree in Caledon Forest, for example. If this event fails, why doesn’t the tree look more… Dead?
