Southsun is dead. How can we say this, because even with the other Living Story events going on, the other world bosses have people at them. The issue is Southsun itself. It’s too unpredictable and too difficult. Those lvl 84’s are over the top…..

It’s clear as day to me that there are two very different types of player playing Guild Wars 2. Those who love it for what it is and appreciate it for what it is and how it differs from other bog MMOs like WoW.

Then there are those who do play but are getting increasingly bored and frustrated with mechanics and features they expect it to have from other MMOs (raids, trinity, gear progression).

I’m definitely in the former group but there are still things I’d like to change, or should I say there are things I think would improve the game for most players, especially my group.

I’ve been doing world completions this week (in between playing the Last of Us) and there are just so many awesome parts to this game. Jumping puzzles that are just really fun, events with a real epic feeling and environments that still wow me.

I am curious to know if AN will ever bend to the wishes of the later group I mention above as they certainly make up the larger of the two and losing them will put a dent in the games profits. I think every players no matter how happy have a personal wish list.

For me it’s functional player housing, a more meaningful/necessary crafting system and of course some rock hard dungeons (this latest one has real promise!). Most of all I’d love to see WvsW given some love as its the thing that will keep the beating heart of Guild Wars 2 going.

With the latest patch a new event to defend workers has been put into Kiel’s landing. This is more difficult than the old one and can be cleared solo but is really a two person job. Pride point can be cleared solo but is really two players. Steampipe can be cleared solo. I can’t really kitten camp karka but it probably needs a group. So a guild needs to take about 10 people down there to clear the camps in a co-ordinated way then wait for the Karka Queen.

I can get a garunteed 3 Rares in about 15 minutes in CoF P1. Neverminding the random loot drops and money rewarded at the end.

THAT is the litmus test of rewards for every other piece of content in the game.

Even if the enemies were nerfed to oblivion, the rewards given for the effort and coordination required for this event is orders of magnitude too low compared to what a group of 5 scrubs can obtain in a third of the time.

It was; it isn’t. The goal with zone overhaul should be the make the zone indefinitely appealing, not appealing for a limited time only.

one question is all I need to ask:

Not especially.

I didnt get the same fun I get massacreing tons of enemies in scaled up events. Southsun enemies are too difficult to fight en masse like in other areas of the game, even Orr. So if I cant have fun catharsis in Southsun, maybe I can have a fun challenge…

Nope. I didnt get the same fun or satisfaction I get from completing the difficult content either. It’s not difficult for the right reasons. It’s a big, annoying Karka with juiced up stats. The egg mechanic isnt interesting enough to differentiate it from any other Champ or even Vet Karka that are a dime a dozen. But at least I get sweet loot for the trouble right?

Not even close. I didnt get the same fun for getting valuable or unique rewards for victory either. The only unique reward for this content is the “Settlers” stat weapons from the vendors, but those arent even tied to the Queen herself… just the camps. And those look like regular junky white weapons anyway.

The sole source of fun I found for this is the experience of playing with other people. But this is an MMO, and that box is checked for virtually every other (more fun) piece of content in the game.

I have no earthly idea why the mods felt the need to change the name of my thread from “Southsun: The Failed Experiment” to “Southsun is a Failed Experiment IMO”. anyone who read my post would clearly understand the contents were my opinion, and that’s the kind of change (I’d say censorship) that only serves to make people running this forum (and by extension, the people making the game) very thin-skinned.

So I’ve been watching the Karka Queen spawn timers on this website:
http://us.gw2stuff.com/en/events/fort-aspenwood

And I’ve noticed that she’s been up for many hundreds of hours on most servers except Fort Aspenwood. On Fort Aspenwood, some one or group has been organizing the activity to kill her every day, usually around 7-8pm Pacific Time.

Whoever this individual or guild is, I wanted to thank them because I’ve been trying to get Settler’s armor for my ranger for weeks, and was able to do so by Guesting onto their server at the right time :-)

As far as the problem with Southsun, it seems like you need a larger critical mass to make a dent in the Karkas, which means a concerted (probably server-wide) effort to kill the Queen at a certain time of day. I witnessed on Fort Aspenwood that it doesn’t take an enormously long time if the resources (i.e., people) are available. No longer than Jormag for example.

As far as motivating people, I think a rare drop of a Scleritte Weapon Ticket would do the job. I don’t mean a rare drop of a crate, with an even rarer chance of a ticket, I mean a reasonably rare/uncommon direct drop of a ticket. Or there should be an achievement, as some people have suggested, where after 100 Karka Queen kills it unlocks a ticket for you.

In my opinion they should change it so that the four camps flip to be karka infested then an event chain kicks off that requires escorting an NPC group to liberate the four camps (in a set order) and afterwards the queen should spawn. This pattern works quite well in Orr.

The liberated camps should not be attacked by karka while the event chain is running and a chest of some sort should spawn in all four camps to entice people to do the pre-event (no guaranteed rares or anything just a regular chest) and not just pop to the nearest waypoint when the queen spawns.

Yeah I made the same suggestion and the more I think about it, this would be the ideal solution. Same thing happens in Orr (particularly in Malchor’s Leap) and even though it fails most of the time you can always resume it, not waiting helplessly aside while all the camps are being overrun and you need tons of players non-stop to keep them non-infested with enemies.
