You have to get both the colored buff from killing the facet as well as that other debuff (fragile). You go to the vortex with both to damage him.

When you say ‘go to the vortex’ do you mean walk into the circle and try attacking him? Or run up to him?
Just tried a round of that, that didn’t work, and killed me or almost killed me? I’m not really sure what happened. I almost died, then all my health was back.
At any rate, picking up the red shield and a donut and walking into the middle made no headway at killing Malevolent Memory.

You don’t directly attack him. You damage him like you did to the facet of darkness which was the one with the circle of like 20 vortexes. If one of the vortexes has a colored aura, kill the facet to get the colored buff as well.

Tried a second time. He doesn’t budge.

Do what I just bolded except go to the vortex and not the boss.

Ok, in the ‘donut fights’, you get a donut, you walk up to a thing, it steals the donut, you blow it up when he gets close, he gets damaged.
Problems:
1) There is only the one Vortex, the colored one.
2) If I try to take a donut to that to have it steal it, it bounces me away (whether I have it’s shield or not)
3) Even if I managed to get it to steal the donut (which I can’t, that thought had occurred to me to try), the big guy is far away and I don’t see how it would damage him.
So how do I get the red vortex to take a donut and damage it such that this ends?

You need both the doughnut and that colored buff that you got by killing the smaller facet.
Act like you are going to get the invincibility buff so you could go to the center but grab the doughnut before you go to the vortex.
Finally, I got it! Thank you!
I wasn’t getting the part to attack the actual color vortex to destroy it so it moves to the next part.
Sorry about that folks, and thank you again!
No problem.
Kill the summoning mini, get color on your head, get the clear “donut” first then go into the color vortex, then kill vortex. Then the big boss should get out of middle. Damage him. When the little summoning minis come always kill them and repeat the above until boss is dead.
Late but might help someone else
Range doesn’t matter. When the boss is at the barrier phase, you need to
- kill the little guy to get the colored light,
- grab fragility,
- go to the vortex crystal (this is why you need the light, without it, you’ll get knocked away) and let it steal the fragility, and
- smash the vortex crystal. Do this, and the barrier phase ends and you can continue doing what you were doing before the barrier phase.
You’re welcome.
Thanks additional folks!
My problem is all the donuts they were giving me were in red circles, and I’d die trying to get them, or almost die sometimes, so it made me think that wasn’t the right way to do it.
I finally got some donuts that were right next to the thing, so I could get both at nearly the same time and I could destroy it.
So all that time was just me trying to get past the red one. Not sure what I did in hind sight to get past the other 2 colors? I must have inadvertently did it right without knowing what I was doing.
Thanks again, that was a bit maddening.
For those struggling with getting the fragility in the barrier phase, the boss throws it towards you, and the damage field follows after. So, you need to move around the boss and grab the fragility before the boss throws the damage field on top of it.

The amazing thing is that the “battle” is so compelling that one can tab out to converse on the forums.

Not everyone knows about those. I’d normally link them but since he was still doing it, and had been for the past hour, I was more direct with my answer.
Thanks for this thread, it pretty much confirms to me that the issue with it is that while you can mentally combine the lessons from light and the lessons from shadow, nothing tells you that the sequence is vital.
The AOEs the boss spams makes seem as if you should get the shield (as done with light) and then go for fragile (in particular if fragile happens to be sitting in a big puddle of AOEs). But if you do that you can’t get back to the vortex.

Fair enough (though even a google search pulls those up right away). Perhaps I’m a bit cynical. I simply get annoyed when people ask questions without even attempting to find out for themselves (in other words expecting other people to do the task and hand them the result).
That said, point taken and perhaps I just need to lower my expectations of the general populous. No sarcasm intended there either.

Or Bing. Whatever.
People come here for answers because it’s the GW2 FORUMS!
Obviously the best place to ask for advice. Don’t be so cynical. If you need to lower your expectations, perhaps they are set a bit too high.
Remember, “Welcome to Tyria. How can I assist?”
Be the solution, not the problem please.

Seems your post was simply directed at me rather than as any helpful piece to this topic. Seems you too can take your own advise. My expectations are for people to do a little legwork themselves before asking to be given everything (especially when it is minimal effort). But as mentioned perhaps those expectations are too high (a point I made and therefore your observation was redundant at best).
All said, I will not be replying to any further comments made on this subject as it is not helpful and I have no intention of exacerbating the issue. So feel free to respond if you have a need for getting the last word, otherwise happy gaming!
If someone asks for advice on how to complete something it is always a nice thing and doesn’t take much effort to copy and paste a link to where they can find the information for themselves if one does not wish to explain in detail.
It is obvious someone asked for help, several someones kindly assisted, someone was able to complete the event and was grateful and then someone complained about someone asking for assistance instead of researching the event out before attempting it. All doubt was removed for me on this one…

Thank you, and happy gaming to you as well.
I honestly hope Anet doesn’t start catering to people like this even more than they already have. This is what you get when you hold everyone’s hand the entire way through the game.
I’m sorry but if you can’t figure out those mechanics after it was literally fed to you not 20 minutes before you attempted it you probably need to work on your problem solving skills. The fight is honestly incredibly simple and I can’t understand how people had difficulty with figuring it out.
It took me a couple of attempts before I figured out that you needed to have BOTH the attunement and the fragility buff before moving next to the vortexes for the Malevolent Memory. If I hadn’t learned earlier that the attunements knock you back when you already have the shield on you (which clued me in as to what was happening), I’d probably be quite frustrated too.
One way ANet might have made this more obvious is if Marjory yells a hint to you if you get knocked back a few times.
