Integrating the Living World Story with open world events I actually think wasn’t that bad of an idea, at the very least it has the potential of stretching out the gameplay and having us revisit some old familiar places. But yes the means by which is was integrated was a bit flat, go here do this events you’re finished, go there repeat. Instances have a bit more narrative, talking, exploration etc. while the open world doesn’t provide the same depth.
They did add a few NPCs to give us some dialog, however it wasn’t really all that gripping. “Grr Vines bad, grab flamethrower and kill stuff”. So I guess the problem was that the text was too instructional or to the point rather, no flavor.
But I wouldn’t call it lackluster, as these content patches are a bit too multifaceted to give a single blanket review.
The Pale Tree being all secretive was annoying (I was expecting a big reveal after the end of Episode 2), Rytlock’s sub-plot was a bit predictable (although I’m hoping Part 2 follows up on that a bit), would have liked another piece of Dry Top but it wasn’t really that big of a deal since I know more is coming (although at the rate of release we’ll probably see maybe 2 zones, 3 if we’re really really lucky). The open world content was fun but not particularly long-term-entertainment.
I do appreciate the attempt to tie in existing Open World content into the Living Story. As CureForLiving says, it was a nice way to get us to revisit old maps and areas. What I didn’t like was how many of the events ended up being bugged or scaled completely out of whack. (Seriously, that Gravelash has WAY too many hit points for an Elite mob. These days I only bother fighting him if he spawns as a Veteran.)
Episode 1 and 2 were fun because they had new content to explore. This new episode is just a revisiting of old areas with a few bits of dialogue… It does seem like a filler and the beginning of LS1. I was doing it on a new character without map completion and I had to waypoint and run for 5 minutes like 20 times. Not well conceived at all from that perspective, in my opinion.
I personally liked episode 3 a lot! It was a lot of fun to have new context given for some of the old events and I felt that actually running from place to place instead of WP:ing improved my immersion significantly :)
The implementation was a bit shaky though, it felt very out of place to be praised for completing events that just happened to be done once you arrived :/
So a book for you consists of a cover and 1 page which has the end written on it?
99% of a good story is not knowing the end…but how you get to that end.

We heard this for 10 month regarding to LS1…. just saying
That doesn’t have anything to do with what’s discussed here.
Open world was horrid.
Bugged and was a PITA first day.
First iron marches quest doesn’t matter if you fail.
Second iron marches quest has an npc to skip over.
Third and fourth were ok, but none of that really advanced a story.
Frost gorge is even sillier, at least 1/2 the time I zoned into a completed quest and simply touched a totem……..
On the other hand, I enjoyed the instances….
