So turns out Lazurus was actually the human god of war Balthazar… Why?

Why would a well known human god, who is still worshiped by most humans, disguise himself as Lazurus? What did he have to gain? Half of the White Mantle that didn’t follow Caudicus? Surely he would have gained more human followers as Balthazar.

That uneasy alliance our character had with Lazurus? It could’ve been a strong alliance with Balthazar, because until this point we had no reason to think the gods were bad. At least then when Balthazar turned on us it would’ve had more impact.

It’s cool that we’re getting more ties to GW1 lore, and I don’t want to blame this on bad writing because maybe they know what their doing, but the way Balthazar went about doing what he did makes no sense to me.

Did I miss something from the story?

1.) Do you know how Balthazar lost his power?

2.) Do you know exactly how weakened Balthazar was before he absorbed part of the bloodstone explosion? Would he have been in danger of getting killed?

3.) How would the other races have reacted? Would the Charr have been overjoyed about a human god returning? Would a Norn who wanted his name forever told in an epic story challenge Balthazar?

4.) How did the Sylvari react when their creator and essentially god appeared? Might a faction of the humans reacte in a similar way?

5.) What about the powers that oppose Balthazar? Gods have enemies and usually those enemys are of a same epic proportion. How useful would have been an entire continent of humans following you when another god being shows up and wipes them all away?

I don’t know, somehow I feel these obvious questions that come to mind very well explain why someone in Balthazars position might want to slowly and covertly repower himself. It’s not always the smartest move to go:“I am your depowered god, bow to me and let me regain my strength!” until a time where you can be sure you don’t get wiped off the face of Tyria.

Balthazar always had the makings of an Antihero. Balthazar and Prince Rurik were my favorite characters in the Guild Wars franchise. So I am not all that happy about the current story of Balthazar… however he hasn’t really done much out of character with his established lore. If the next living story doesn’t redeem him somewhat, then I will have simply lost faith in ArenaNet to deliver.

I suspect Mr. E was watching out for Balthazar making an attempt at the Elder Dragons’ Magic and Balthazar didn’t want to tip him off out of fear that he would interfere with his plans.

I also suspect Melandru and Lyssa are in on this due to a vine capturing the guy with the tracker to Taimi’s device and Balthazar having Lyssa’s mirror.

As for where those two are hiding:

1. Melandru is likely posing as the Avatar of the Pale Tree and trying to throw the Sylvari(which she connected to her Realm of the Gods AKA the Dream) at the Elder Dragons in order to gain the Dragons’ Magic. Her attempts to keep Scarlet and us from The All is due to her not wanting anyone to interfere with the Gods’ plan to steal the Elder Dragons’ Magic due to morals.

2. Lyssa’s location is hard to decipher yet most fans assume she’s Jenna and Anise.

Personally I kinda believe E has been working in collusion with Balthazar all along. He could have been infiltrating the white-mantle long before the explosion in bloodstone fen just so that Balthazar regained a bit of power in order to pass off as Lazarus. Some wild theory about the loss of power from Balthazar: what if he lost his power because he helped Rytock getting his revenant power in order to get out of the mist ?

Some wild theory about the loss of power from Balthazar: what if he lost his power because he helped Rytock getting his revenant power in order to get out of the mist ?

Rytlock’s sword was a gift from the gods (to humans), and if it was inclined to pop into the Mists, it was most likely aiming for “home”, e.g. the divine realm of its creator or true owner. If Rylock followed it…

I’ve always suspected that the reason the gods left Tyria is due to Big Multiverse Issues, not the dragons, and if that were true, Balthazar’s sorry state suggests that the gods are losing that fight and those issues are about to spill over into the backwater colony world called Tyria and make us wish all we had to deal with was the Godzilla 6.

The Six may have taken the opportunity to conscript Rytlock as their agent on Tyria (with Mist powers to match). If so, the fact that a Charr was willing to go along with it means they convinced him either by proving the severity of the threat, or by promising to fix the ghost situation, or both (but the former seems more plausible given the distrust Charr have for gods). Of course, it’s possible that they were hostile, and he only barely escaped with his life and his sword, and by learning new abilities. Or that he didn’t, and Rytlock is Kormir in disguise. Or that he never met the gods and just played WvW and fractals for a while.

The White Mantle were an easy target because they had resources, an established and stable military order, and illicit connections. They were ready to go. He still had to work in the shadows, and they knew where all the best shadows were. If he’d come out openly as Balthazar (in what we assume is a greatly diminished state), then sure, he’d have some immediate converts, some of them wealthy enough, but it would have been civil war, he couldn’t spin up his converts into a functional organization nearly as quickly as he could set the White Mantle to work on phase 1. It was a sound pragmatic choice, especially if he’d intended to let the charade carry on longer than it ended up doing.

My take on the vine was that was the Druid, not Melandru. You follow the Druid’s voice to find him and when you do that’s when the Druid basically tells you to now GTFO or else.

It was certainly the druid’s work and we learn why they are so hostile in Zinn’s Voice logs hidden throughout the map.

Melandru is certainly not helping Balthazar because the Druid wanted Balthazar out of her sacred garden as well but could not because he was still too power for them.

As of now I cannot say where Balthazar stands as a role because his actions is self preserving being to gain back the power he lost after the Gods left Tyria. How he lost it and why he want it back still is a mystery for now.

There’s nothing pointing toward (1) being relevant. Sure, it might be, but it’s just an assumption.

(2) is valid until the explosion of the bloodstone. It doesn’t explain why he would keep his disguise up.

(3) I can’t imagine the charr being overjoyed my a mursaat appearance either. And he’s leading a significant part of the White Mantle. Norn teenagers may dream about challenging a god, but would surely be stopped by their elders who wouldn’t want to risk a war for someone’s silly dreams.

(4) Yeah. The White Mantle themselves, most likely.

(5) Right. Making the spectacular appearance and consuming a bloodstone worth of power should totally go unnoticed.
