Lately in the living story I’ve been finding it really hard to follow the story. The game has gotten way too metaphysical with these made up concepts of dragon energy and leylines.

Just a suggestion to simplify things a bit.

Consider these examples:

“The alaronical actuator in the right tread of the T95-82 battle tank has a weak carbide structure!”

“Shoot the right tread on the tank!”

I don’t think a simpler story is necessarily a better story. I agree the story could be told better, though.

You can pretty much just ignore the metaphysics — ultimately, the story instances all involve one of the characters (sometimes your own) saying, “right, we can break the tread at its weakest link,” which typically translates to using the special skill to stun the boss and then hitting hard.

In other words, one can take time to understand the details (as does our own Konig Des Todes or Reddit’s Wooden Potatoes) or you can just <nod> and kill stuff.

Put yet another way, it’s a matter of taste whether lore should be simple or complicated. Some of us like it multilayered, including ANet.

Follow the green star. Kill everything in sight.

Alternatively if you want to try and follow it I recommend playing through the instances solo so you can take your time and set up a chat tab that will show the NPC dialogue so you can re-read it if you need to. Speak to NPCs in between dialogue/fights as they will sometimes explain things in more detail.

And maybe re-play it periodically. There’s some things which only make sense after you’re given more information, which appears in a later episode. That’s fine if you can remember everything you were told earlier, but my memory isn’t that good so I find it helpful to review the previous episodes to remind myself what’s going on.

But there are also some things which won’t ever make sense, particularly the detailed descriptions of how magic works. Magic is Tyria’s version of physics so listening to someone explain it in detail is supposed to be like listening to a lecture on quantum physics – it will sound like nonsense unless you’ve had training in it, and no one is real life has had training in how Tyrian magic works. Some of the terminology isn’t even real words, and the rest is often using words in strange orders that don’t really make sense.

But generally someone will summarise the important points afterwards, such as summing up Taimi’s discovery as “every dragon has a weakness”.

I like Taimi’s shifts from “dragon minions and energy types and blah-de-blah-de-blah” to “yes, I am keeping bug organs alive to experiment on like a little ghoul” to “I named [this bug organ] Spencer!” It’s a way to deliver complex lore theory and then summarize it without making the people who only follow the summary feel too dumb. Those cheeky conversations are actually fairly well-written.

It’s a great movie! I played LS1, but I watched the whole thing anyway as a good refresher.
