Taimi is all we need... (potential spoilers)
Marjory does listen to our input, discuss things with us, but does not always agree. Not blindly obeying is probably the biggest difference between the guild, and the vigil, whispers, or priory — it’s not a military based group, so obedience is not required in the same way.
You are not wrong, though, that various forces outside of just the dragons (and associated things) have kept a number of parts of the guild out.
Uh, and I tend to agree on Braham, though perhaps not for the same reasons; I mostly look at his actions as pretty much exactly what a traumatised 16 year old boy would do in the situation and culture. He needs therapy, not to be dragged into fighting the next dragon.
When he is on a bit more stable a footing, then he might be a great member of the team, but right now his pain and trauma mean he is nothing but a liability — to himself, and to anyone he drags along on his downward spiral to death.
Taimi and Poobah best team.

I know Marjory doesn’t strictly have to obey us. However, it was agreed that the player character would be the leader of the guild. However, she dismisses our input to the point where it feels like the title of “leader” has no meaning. I’m not expecting her to stand to attention every time we walk into the room, but at the very least you’d expect her to take us a bit more seriously. Keep in mind the player character has the most experience when it comes to handling elder Dragons and world ending problems. It’s not like our opinion has no weight or bearing.
As for Braham, the fact that he’s acting out is precisely why he should actually be in the guild if he wants to hunt a dragon, so he can follow the lead of someone who is still approaching the situation with a level head and a lot of experience. That way we could at least direct his wrath in a way that is appropriate. Instead, he’s trying to lead his own assault on Jormag, despite his inexperience and despite how emotionally compromised he is. I get the idea behind the whole loss and trauma thing, but that won’t be a good excuse if he ends up subjecting his own race to genocide.
But those iffy situations aside, I think my biggest issue is that our guild seems to be nonexistent. Taimi is literally the only consistent member aside from ourselves. It makes me wonder why the writers decided on this direction if they’re going to spread everyone so thin and make it feel like a two member guild.

Ever play Final Fantasy 6?
If you didn’t, here’s a short plot recap. Long after the “War of the Magi” wrecked the world and appeared to wipe out magic, it is once again on the rise in the world. One empire has learned of this, and has taken steps to harness it. You go on a long and convoluted journey to stop them, building a large team of quite respectable fighters and adventurers on the way. You finally confront the main bad guy in battle right at the source of all magical power.
And you fail. Miserably. The bad guy pretty much becomes god, reduces the world to ruins, and the party is scattered.
The second half of the game resumes a year later, with just one character left. You have to explore the now ruined world, and slowly regather your team before you can finally confront this newly empowered “god” and try to end him once and for all.
If any of this sounds familiar to you, it should. I think it’s safe to say that ANet has more than a few fans of this game doing the writing for this story, and that “rebuild and regather from the ashes” idea is what we’ll be doing in the expansion. They didn’t raise the level cap, so our character isn’t getting much stronger. Instead, they’ve scattered the team, FF6 style, and we have to rebuild our team’s strength instead.
Now, with all that said… Can we please ditch everyone but Taimi and the two charr, and rebuild from that? Please? With the current crew, Dragon’s Watch feels less like a guild, and more like an extended escort mission.
delicate, brick-like subtlety.

I hate to say it, but I agree. And that is saying a lot for someone who detests asurans and dislikes charr… Taimi and the two charr are just more enjoyable…ack, cant say it without choking….ack, ack…characters than…ack…heave…ack….flipping wesley crusher and worf wannabes…ack…the others.
I agree with the general idea of the topic as the whole concept of pitting the Player Character (and Taimi) temporary against the “rest of the world” is something I’ve seen and am also expecting.
I would also count Caithe at least indirectly to Dragon Watch. She hasn’t been invited yet, unless my bad memory is wrong, but she’s earned enough trust back to watch over Aurene while we do other things.
As a great Taimi fan, I love it that she’s been a permantent stable member of the ragtag guild.
As for Braham: He’s obviously too volatile so far. His reaction in Episode 3 was disuscussed/raged at ad nauseum, so I won’t go further. But if he’s in Dragon Watch in the future, something needs to happen. Jormag-related or the Commander smacking some sense into him in a “formal” duel or so. Both of them talked past each other in regards to the Commanders idea of showing respect to Eir with Dragon Watch and Braham’s idea with keeping the name of Destiny Edge.
I would also recommend keeping an eye on Canach as a potential future ally. I don’t think they are done with him by a long shot.

Yeah. I’m not counting Canach out by any means, but at least he had the decency of not giving us any false pretenses about joining the guild when he clearly wasn’t ready to just yet. It’s better than saying “sure let’s work together” only to then run off into the sunset crying out about being his own person and doing whatever he wants. XD
Thay being said, I reckon if he does join he’d be much more reliable than some of the other current members have been. He seems to be the type who is honor bound by his word and so once he commits to something he sees it through to the end.
Rox is the only one worth keeping around. The rest should have been left behind long long ago.
I’m happy that this series has worked with a limited cast of characters per story instance as it has helped to keep the story focused: as much as I like certain characters (e.g. Canach) it’s clear to me that not every episode nor every instance would have benefited from adding them in. Limiting the core characters who link the 6 episodes together to just Poobah and Taimi was a smart move.
That said if my assumptions about the episode 6 are correct we could see a big cast reunion for the final showdown.
Now, with all that said… Can we please ditch everyone but Taimi and the two charr, and rebuild from that? Please? With the current crew, Dragon’s Watch feels less like a guild, and more like an extended escort mission.
Personally I’d be happy just having Taimi while the rest of the cast can go do whatever, I never see any of them again, and I rebuild DW with the members I want on board.
As a great Taimi fan, I love it that she’s been a permantent stable member of the ragtag guild.
I was over the moon when we were able to buy a Taimi mini in the new zone. Much as I have hated parts of this story the fact that she was constantly in it kept me going.

Braham is part of the reason I want to keep Rytlock around. He and Caithe are actual members of Destiny’s Edge, and they have every right to smack him down for trying to steal the name. I don’t think Caithe would, but Rytlock? In a heartbeat.

I thought Caithe was already inducted.
I agreed with this so hard at first, but then after reading your description of everyone’s contributions, I was like, “Yep, sounds like a Guild to me.”

I’m hoping he DOES beat the crap out of Braham in the next LS update, and outright calls him out for disrespecting his own mother’s memory by acting like nobody else lost somebody they cared about. I think that’d be an easy way to get some sense into him. Especially if the PC tells him that Braham almost got Rox, RYTLOCK’S SISTER, killed. That alone may make him beat the snot out of him…because as much as he doesn’t want to admit it, I’m pretty sure he genuinely cares for Rox. He just doesn’t like showing his emotions much (as shown in CoF and Arah story modes).

That sounds quite neat if it occured. Or make it choice-based decision.
1) “Thanks Rythlock, but I’ll handle this. Maybe I tried to be too considerate”
2 “Go ahead Rythlock, Destiny’s Edge meant a lot to you as well”
Even better, let both of them during the battle response that Eir was important to the them as well, but that the PC also lost Traeharne (and had to end his life with their very own hands).

My thought about the characters in Dragon’s Watch:
Taimi- without her the story is really boring. She is really clever and I think her wisdom and the interest in the matters of magic in Tyria, Eternal Alchemy etc is caused by Scarlet so this is why she grew really clever. Anyway people are complaining that she is too clever, but I think that in our real world geniuses are born really rarely. And Taimi is just the genius such as in our world. Her wisdom is extraordinary and her flair is amazing. I wish she will grow as the genius such as Zojja or Snaff. Anyway she is already more clever than they are both. This is extraordinary and don’t change Taimi.
Kasmeer- like a lot of players expected she is/was working for the Queen and Countness Anise. She is in shock obviously and I am a bit sad that when Jory was injured by Balthazar she ran away and she didn’t behaved such as when jory was injured by Scarlet. It’s really complicated. We can say that her behaviour was explicable but when we look in the other side she just behaved like coward.
Marjory- without her mission we could never know that Lazarus is just imposter (she said about the mirror of Lyssa). So we can have regret to her, but now I admire her courage that he said no to Commander.
Rox- we don’t know she is working for us or no. Is she really on our side? I have some doubts.
Braham- he is just lost, he wanna sacrifice himself for what? For killing the dragon who just wants to eat the whole Tyria? Anyway Jormag is likely sleeping, so if he really wanna kill himself, let him go. I am just bored by him.
Ryltock- I still cannot believe he disappeared from story… It’s always cool to see him. I hope he will come back in ep 6.
Ok now we can say that Dragon’s Watch really exists, but we just need to:
1) change Braham’ mind, or just invite the norn who will be clever finally. (it will be hard to find clever norn). I wish he would be so clever like Eir. Eir was the best norn so far.
2) We need one Sylvari, Canach said no, so I think that Caithe really deserves to be in our team. She is protecting Aurene while we cannot, she is ready to protect her at any cost. And she doesn’t show any regrets to Commander, just beg him for mercy, for understanding and I admire the behaviour such like this.
Canach will play the major role in Sylvari’ matters, so Caithe can finally take care of matters of Tyria as she was meant to do this. So I think everyone can agree with me that she is really welcome to join Dragon’s Watch.

I dont know…Am i the only one whos sees a raise of the new Trahearne?
I mean look at her? She is a “marry sue”. – Why?
She is growing stronger, every time we see her. That is okay, but she is growing in a terrifying fast way.
First she was just smart but now she builds machienes that handle two dragons at one time…TWO DRAGONS …yes and a god. Or what ever he was doing there and how he ended.
We had to help powerful old, but inprisoned spirits, to be able to enter the volcanoe.
And she? She entered in no time with her armor… err golem… well… “Gomor”, that she build at the same time, when she build that double dragon destroyer…
Still not seeing a “marry sue”?
Well how about getting the information about “what happens if both dragons fall”…yeah a simulation…I dont know…
i currently work with simulations…and to make a good one, you need pleanty of time and tonns of information. But guess what. the little girl gathered info and programmed that simulation at the same time, when she was building a double dragon destroyer and the gomor…
Well she meantiond that she got nearly no sleep…and then there was councillor phlunt…so even less time…
Still not seeing the “marry sue”…well, then lets wait and see what happens next.
Trahearne was even less powerful and did less to become hated. i wonder if it will be the same with this “marry sue” and that all what she is to me…
And about those other “member” of our guild. Instead of taimi, they feel like normal people , to me. and in my opinion, they are much more likable than…you know…that “mar…”. i think you get me.
I think Taimi has potentional to be the new prime evil. she is growing power far too fast and with her childish mind, she cant be able to handle things, that even grownups cant handle well.
Power corrupts…The more, the faster…

1) The Commander got the idea that we could kill 2 dragons at once. Taimi just concretized this thought.
2) It’s weird that Taimi, the genius realised that killing 2 dragons is a bad idea after months. It’s weird that the Commander listened to her as to his god. even in this forum I and others was writing that killing 2 dragon will cause a cataclysm. But I was hoping that Aurene or “Lazarus” (I didn’t know he is a real imposter yet) will consume the magic and the magic would be balanced, but after flashpoint we know that nothing can help us when 2 dragons will awake.
3) Phlunt didn’t even know that we have a secret lab, so I think Taimi was lying all the time to him. I think when Phlunt was asking where she was, she was just talking lies. The kid’s mentality…
As I said Zojja for example was genius, but she fought on our side all the time. And I think and really hope it’s not going to be like with Scarlet. Anyway that would be really bad for lore.

This.
Taimi has proven to be loyal to us throughout Living World Season 3. Annoying or not and regardless if her and the PC see eye to eye on everything, she’s been by our side and a presence one way or another.
I can’t say the same for the other members of DW who either are doing their own thing or consist of members I personally don’t want in the guild at all.

Lol. It would be funny if Taimi did actually start going down the path of Scarlet. Actually, it would be an interesting twist to things. I wouldn’t mind them developing her character in such a way so that she’s always walking the path between brilliance and insanity and where she kinda has to keep herself in check to avoid going over the deep end of the spectrum.
Right now, she does strike me as very naive. She has great ideas and the knowledge to implement them, but also ends up making childish mistakes. Her late discerning of the risks involved with her plan to defeat the two dragons at once could have been costly if we weren’t able to intervene. That being said, I also still feel like despite her flaws she’s still the only one making truly meaningful contributions to our progress in LS3, aside from the commander him/herself that is.
I will say one thing though. I don’t think Taimi will become like Trahearne. Trahearne’s issue was not that he was a Mary Sue. I think it was just that he was a somewhat dull character. I personally never hated him, but I never had true cause to like him either. I just felt indifference, and this is because his character was never really fleshed out. He kinda just appeared, did some seemingly important stuff, and then was gone. It left people questioning why he was given such an important role in the story when, as a character, he was wholly underwhelming.
Taimi at least has the benefit of having a much more interesting personality. It may not be something everyone likes, but I find her to be much more engaging and “fun” than Trahearne, or anyone else for that matter. In fact, if I had to put it plainly, I’d say she’s the most fleshed out character in the story so far. The sad part is, I started out liking our new makeshift party in LS1 and LS2. I enjoyed Rox, and Marjory and Kasmeer and so on. I felt like they all had so much potential. But they’re kinda being written into corners. It’s always drama and self pity and tears and despair and relationship issues. It gets a bit old when every single character is always portrayed as having some deeply profound issue. Sometimes you just want something more upbeat or less whiny. I want the old Braham back. I want the old team dynamic. DX
I feel as though every Story mission starts or ends with…
Taimi: “Hello, Commander? <Deus Ex Machina>. <Poor attempt at comedy>. Call you next mission with more <Deus Ex Machina>.”
I’d be just fine if Taimi pulled a Kasmeer in the next expansion and season 4.
“Deus ex machina” means the unsolvable problem who suddenly is solved by situation, person etc.
Appearing of Balthazar was not “Deus ex machina” in the meaning of this term. (from wiki https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deus_ex_machina). Balthazar didn’t resolve any problem, he just appeared and stole Taimi’s Machine.
Stop using the term if you don’t know the meaning. More ancient greek culture would heal your brain from idiocies.

The ancient Greeks had their own, “idiocies.”
…and the poster you quoted was not referring to Balthazar resolving problems.
With the current crew, Dragon’s Watch feels less like a guild, and more like an extended escort mission.

Rox- we don’t know she is working for us or no. Is she really on our side? I have some doubts.
Taimi is the character most loyal to the Commander, but Rox is the character most loyal to the group.
You have to remember that Rox lost her entire warband in a moment. That was her family, all wiped out before she knew what was happening, and she was the only “lucky” survivor. The group has become her new warband/family, and she’ll do whatever she can to keep them all safe. If that means disobeying us, then she’ll disobey. But she will be right there, trying to keep us all alive while doing so.
Who went back into Maguma to find Garm? Rox did, even though Braham or Caithe both could have (and should have) done so. And now that Braham’s acting stupid, she’s sticking with him to try and keep him alive. She trusts the rest of us to keep ourselves intact until she can return, and she’s passing news to us when she can.
If we ever have to order her to abandon us and run, she’ll disobey. She won’t run. Any of the others we could convince if the need was great enough, but not Rox. So, there’s her loyalty for you.
delicate, brick-like subtlety.
You know EXACTLY what will happen in episode 6 though. Murphy’s Law will hit at last and something will happen to Taimi in one way or another, and she’ll go absent in this episode and we won’t find out what happened to her until the expansion similar to how Rytlock went MIA just before HoT. I almost want to put money on that statement.
Taimi is all we need. Given that she nearly succeeded in silencing TWO elder dragon’s at once on her own until the intervention, she’s a real threat to the dragons and quite possibly a threat to those who made a reappearance in episode 5. Taimi will be the one disappearing during the most crucial point in the story.

Actually it seems you missed the joke ….. ‘(a) god in the machine’. I have not heard it mean ‘unsolvable problem’ ….. more a situation solved in a way that is more what you would get from a lazy writer. For example, the short story I once wrote solved a problem with the universe exploding and I titled it in latin as being an infinitely absurd god in the machine.

Im getting tired of Taimi because shes the commander, Im just some soldier doing errands. Remember the joke about Trahearne and changing a lightbulb? “Commander, a word…”. Pretty sure if the PC wouldn’t do kitten the story would continue anyway, because Taimi.
No clue what to do? Taimi.
In trouble? Taimi.
Stop world from getting destroyed? Taimi.
Searching for something? Taimi.
Hotel? Taimi.
Everytime there is a question Taimi will be the one to answer it. If she doesn’t have an answer she has it in the next story step or episode. Canach doesn’t know everything, and you help him search for an answer. I like following Canach, it’s always a surprise what you encounter and he actually has some humor. Unlike Taimi which knows how the future looks like in detail and has an annoying sense of humor.
To be fair, without Taimi or someone playing that part, we’d be just another moron trying to hack away at an Elder Dragon with a sword. We’d be as stupid as Braham, maybe even worse.
We need someone providing the tools and information we need to take down our targets. Yes, they rely on Taimi too much as a plot device, but who else could we turn to?
And it’s not always Taimi. In HoT, who was smashing down the living barriers to clear a path for us? Rytlock. Who gave us a way into the dream? Trahearne. Who saved Divinity’s Reach from the White Mantle attack? Queen Jennah. Walked back into the jungle to rescue Garm? Rox. And so on.
Yes, Taimi is used a lot, and part of that may be called lazy writing. But she doesn’t do everything, she’s just the one that’s still there for us through everything so we get more of her. But if you want to do the research some time, I’m sure ANet can come up with a LS chapter where we keep repeating the same lab instance, doing minigames to simulate working with machines and performing tests on dragon energy.
delicate, brick-like subtlety.
Actually if I could get rid of anyone it’d be Taimi — because I agree with BlooDyliCious that she has (almost) completely usurped the story and the protagonist role. Need anything? Taimi has the knowledge. Taimi has the toys. Taimi has the resouces. Taimi has the contacts. Taimi has everything. And yet at the same time she’s also an oh-so-oppressed victim of her evil, evil elders who don’t have the merest fraction of her incomparable genius. Yeah.
I’m really sick of it, and it doesn’t help that I can’t stand her personality either.
For all its flaws and clunkiness, at least the vanilla storyline tried to show many different people coming together to work on one goal, approaching it from multiple angles, gathering information from multiple sources, and we had an active hand in it all. As I said before, I miss the Pact (and the racial storyline of the first PS chapter even moreso) and would take it and its characters over the current batch any day.

This gave me a terrifying thought…what if she’s being built up like this so she can be killed off, as a catalyst that forces Braham to realize he’s been a fool, Marjory that she’s been too reckless, Kasmeer that she’s been too cowardly, Rox that she’s been too complacent, etc. If I’m right, it’d be another Snaff, but a reverse reaction. Rather than blame everybody else for her death, the team will blame themselves, and actually start working together after it.

Oh no, a new threat!
Hey, Taimi, can you explain the whole thing and build a machine to deal with it please? Meanwhile, I’ll be sipping alcoholic beverages on Southsun beach.
I see people excusing Braham with this “he’s 16!” line a lot, so I have to wonder: given that Norn and Human physiology is very different (and only look similiar, but are in fact from completely different worlds): why would a Norn teenager react the same as a Human one? I mean, yes, Anet’s writers aren’t good enough to to escape the “human in funny suit” issue that most RPGs have (meaning that despite their vastly different appearances, cultures, morals and ethics etc, they still act human), but at the very least, explain why/if Norn youngsters act like this normally.
Edit: Braham is actually 21 years old, not 16. So his acting is even worse.
Anyway, I agree with the OP. At this point, it’s Taimi and Poobah against the world. And Meowth, of course.

Cute attempt at putting words into my mouth, but no. You’ll notice that I praised the vanilla storyline because my character was part of something much greater, something that actually felt like it was built by and for the many different people of a world coming together to fight against their utter destruction. And they were all needed, they all had something to contribute. The Pact flagship Glory of Tyria was said to embody that, which is why I was actually sad when I found its wreck in HoT. I liked Trahearne and was fine being his second instead of the head honcho.
I don’t want to be Taimi any more than I want to be Taimi’s utterly replacable errand runner and NPC punching bag. I want that feeling of “we all come together” back.
(And I’d very much like a break from “asura magitech can do everything” even if Taimi miraculously wasn’t involved for once.)
What I enjoyed the most about this episode was having Taimi with me.
1. Taimi is mission control. Or at least has been. That might change now that she has her new mech.
2. Phlunt is the council’s patsy – the member so self-absorbed, stupid, and arrogant to be manipulated into doing stuff the Arcane Council needs a councilor to oversee, but is too dangerous/boring for any of them to go through with. A dangerous, magically-active cave in a forsaken desert needs investigation? Send Phlunt to die in the dunes. A meeting with bookahs? Send Phlunt to handle the blather. Overseeing the excavation of a city that was eaten by bugs at the height of its power, and the bugs are still there? Send Phlunt to get eaten by the bugs. So that’s why a kid can manipulate him.

I have been so much happier working with Taimi since she has been in a mission control role. I hope they don’t go back to the season 2 days, where she was needing rescue now that she has the new golem suit. I understood her needing to be there in person for the current episode, kind of a special case. But now that they have her in the suit again, I hope they don’t write a ‘special case’ into every episode going forward.

Agreed.
On top of the obvious preference to not have a physical liability in hostile territory there is the cool factor (to me) of having mission control on the comm while I am leading a field mission. Very Mission Impossible vibe.
This is my main objection to Taimi. She’s a child super-genius who can solve everything with magitech, with no need for any adult Asura to get involved in the process! Wisdom and experience – what are those?
Seriously, on multiple occasions now she’s built a machine intended to have extremely significant world-wide dragon-hindering effects, all by herself. Shouldn’t some experienced adult Asura get involved before she flips the on switch?

That would be great except that the only adult Asura that I feel like would have a chance of talking some sense into Taimi or guide her better is Zojja and so far Anet doesn’t exactly seem keen on bringing her back. :x

That is pretty much how I have felt all through S3. After the first two episodes all I really cared about in the story was getting to the new map but interactions with Taimi were the exception.

I don’t know. I think that maybe Pact Medic Ceera (Tonn’s wife) might be able to get through to her.
“My beloved Tonn was the best demolitions expert in the Pact. He always knew what he was doing. Never made a mistake….. until that last day. If someone had been looking over his work, double checking everything, then he would still be alive today, and I wouldn’t be alone. Find someone. Let them help you. If not for your sake, then for the sake of those that worry about you.”
delicate, brick-like subtlety.
Wait, what’s “Dragon’s Watch” again? I think I’ve heard it somewhere before, but I don’t remember seeing such a thing.
Taimi is what happens when bad writers have nobody to reign them in from inserting their pet character into everything. Even crap they don’t need to be a part of.
They completely overshadow other characters to the point of bother having other characters exist when that favorite characters does literally everything. She’s obviously somebody on the dev team’s favorite and she’s solving all the problems and getting all of the spotlight to the point she’s this insufferable mary sue(being a cripple is hardly a flaw and even then her dumb mech is starting to negate that) that needs to die or go away now for the good of the story. It’s certainly at the point I hardly even care about lore anymore solely because of her and I’m one of the very few people who has actually read all three of the novels.
Apparently Anet didn’t learn from Blizzard’s mistakes because Taimi right now is the exact reason people started to hate Thrall when he was previously a beloved character.
