This was originally a question for Wooden Potatoes but i wanted to see what the community thought.
“Do you think that Tengu may be introduced as a race similar to the Worgen in WoW. They also were a reclusive people but when a dragon came along it knocked down their gate and they were forced to get assistance from the Alliance which we are forming with all of the races. Im seeing alot of possiblities here for them to be introduced since theyre so close to Mordremoth. They even have a waypoint near their bridge in Caledon so they must have a Ley line nearby. Im really holding out hope and want to hear your imput on the matter.
EDIT: Also the Sylvari are similar to Night Elves, the night elves were the Worgens first contact in the Alliance. Sylvari are closest to the Tengu?.”

That would be their /dance animation, actually.

Dear ANet writers,
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

I loved the Ritualist dance! For both male and female.

Gosh, those olden days when we would * dance. Sigh. It’s just not the same, anymore.

I don’t think the Tengu will be introduced in Season Two. I don’t think any new races will be introduced, really. I’m not really fond of the Tengu for a new race, anyway.

Honestly, I see it being more practical to introduce in Season 3 or whenever Primordus becomes a threat. They would be a perfect race to lead into Cantha, with their desire to retake the prestigious lands.

Maybe yes as a playable race, but I would have to disagree with this. The tengu should be coming into this season in the form of NPC’s for the story, It would also be a good time for a intoduction to set up for the future playable race. Regaurdless of when Primordus becomes a threat, Mordi is THE threat now, over anything else, even the other elder dragons that are out causing their own damage right now. I highly doubt Mordi is going to care about the tengu’s sepperation from the rest of the world. He is going to take their land at the same time he takes the rest of it, and it seems like he is taking EVERYTHING all at once. It would make sense to bring them in finally this season. Open up the two maps they have, and make a couple episodes about us helping them with their most likely infestation of vines. For all we know they might have some secret knowledge or artifact that will help in defeating Mordi, they are a very old and ancient race after all. Even if they wanted to stay out of it and only use these things to rid Mordi for their own benefit, they will still have to open their gates and enter the world to use it.

That idea seems forced and if it would happen it would feel so poorly implementated since we haven’t heard from Tengu at all in this season. To be honest, if there’s a race that would be playable and rightfully so since they seem to have more connection to the story than the tengu, it is the centaurs. Not that I’d ever want centaur playable but at least it would make more sense.

Tengu should’ve been introduced as story npcs last patch because otherwise it would just feel shoehorned into the story.

Why should the Tengu be involved, they aren’t close to the Maguuma wastes…

Honestly, I feel like sometimes people are just trying to shove the Tengu into everything and demanding them as a playable race without actually thinking about it.

edit: Okay, yeah the vine attacks are all over the place, but I feel like people are clinging to the tengu and not even coming up with good reasons to include them.

I very much want Tengu to be a playable race too, but yeah, unless the Dominion of Winds comes under assault from Mordremoth, they don’t really have a reason to get involved at this point.

The best opportunity for bringing them into the game came during the Battle for Lion’s Arch. With a giant drill boring into the harbour, LA under assault from Scarlet’s armies, the Tengu had the perfect opportunity for opening their gates and coming to the aid of Lion’s Arch, finally making their choice on where they stand. Instead, they decided to remain behind their walls.

I’m guessing it’s still some time away before the technical aspects of including another race are done, but it still a big wasted opportunity.

It has to be a full race or not at all.

That means a city, a full-size starter zone, personal story, cultural armor and cultural weapons.

That’s probably why we won’t see them in a hurry.

The vine attacks aren’t all over the place. The attacks follow two lines, one of which runs straight through the Dominion of Winds. While the vines are surfacing for waypoints outside of the Dominion, they may or may not be attacking inside too.

Unless, shockingly enough, there are no waypoints in the Dominion of winds because they don’t let outsiders within the wall.

Remember the one camp in Caledon forest they let Asura do expiraments from their camp with the promise to build an Asura gate from that point to LA to boost trade for the Tengu. Not “Asura gate from within the dominion to LA.” but “Asura gate from a point near the wall but outside to LA.”

Let me just help you with that:

I already figured they didn’t have wps, hence the hedging. That doesn’t mean they don’t have other magical constructs, or that the tendrils won’t break ground-level anyway.

Primodius has been ravaging the tengu behind the walls for the last 200 years. They even shot at US when scarlet attacked lions arch.
I doubt theyll care at all about mordremoth.

It only makes sense given that they were exiled from their homelands and hunted and warred with for thousands of years in cantha.

I think the tengu (and the largos) are being saved for an expansion. The Living World team is not all of ArenaNet (afik). Going off of the team sizes from last year, I think there are a lot more people working at ArenaNet.

Jeff Grubb and Ree Soesbee are probably the two most senior writers and loremasters at ArenaNet and they both still work at ArenaNet but from what I have gathered about the writing team behind the Living World, Bobby Stein is the team lead and Angel McCoy does the majority of the character writing and dialogue. I haven’t heard anything to indicate Jeff Grubb or Ree Soesbee were involved (at least regularly) in the writing of the Living World. I think Angel also once mentioned that Ree is working on an unannounced GW2 project.

If the Living World is the primary source of future content for GW2, why would two of their most senior writers not be leading it? I believe the answer is that they are working on the unannounced expansion. They are world building Elona, Cantha or the lands north of Tyria that we haven’t explored. Maybe they had something to do with some of the Maguuma stuff we have seen (or will see soon) but they are primarily involved with fleshing out what’s behind the tengu wall, their culture, their government, their history following the events of GW2, their heroes and how the story will handle their introduction into GW2 as we know it. The same for the largos.

Maybe we will see tengu introduced via the Living World model, but personally I expect it will come in the form of an expansion release (a large content update, whether we pay for it or not). I think the tengu are being saved for an expansion, and that’s why the Living Story hasn’t touched them. It hasn’t dealt with them in Caledon forest, it only minimally dealt with them during the attack on Lion’s Arch and for the most part, tengu have been very quiet. The time for their story isn’t now.

They only ‘shot at us’ because we saw evidence of molten alliance trying to get to the wall with drills.

Also, as was pointed out back then, even during peacetime LA they warned people to stay away from the walls.

IIRC, Destroyers popping up inside their land is a more recent thing actually.

Let them rot behind their wall. The Tengu are dead to me, do you hear!

Talon would be ashamed.

Molten Alliance? Please. The Breachmaker could have knocked in their precious gate without significant effort. That ship’s presence, so close to their lands, was a gigantic threat to them – except that what she cared about was in the harbor, not the Dominion of the Winds. But given the attacks Scarlet had made prior to that point, could anyone honestly believe themselves excluded from being a potential target?

Of course, when they do ask us for help with their destroyer problem, we’ll help. Because WE’RE NOT ISOLATIONIST JERKS.

Sarcasm? Because if not, the tengu were forced out of their homelands from humans and the asurans promised a gate for them, which never got completed after they were paid. They are very distrusting of other races, for pretty good reason.
