From what I understand, Lion’s Arch was destroyed as part of the Living Story.

it seems odd to me, given all the technology of the asura, and the architectural marvels that are the race’s cities, that no rebuilding attempt has been made.

I think it would be a wonderful addition to the living story and to the environment of the game as a whole to have (over the course of several months) Lion’s Arch is varying stages of reparation.

A world as diverse and creative as Tyria should be uniting to restore the symbol of their unity, not just leaving it to rot.

In the festival of the four winds I think they rebuilt it slightly and I have the feeling it will slowly be rebuilt over time because I do agree leaving the most important city destroyed wouldn’t really make much sense.

If you want an in-world explanation, consider that rebuilding takes a lot of work and money, and Lion’s Arch is short on both right now, after so many people were killed and so much property was destroyed.

The other racial capitals could help, of course, but they have their own problems to deal with. The Norn and Charr have their own wars, especially the Charr. The Asura aren’t as hard-pressed, but they don’t, on the whole, seem tremendously generous, especially if it’s a question of rebuilding a pirate city or spending funds on Rata Sum and academic research. The Sylvari might be more caring, and less-pressed after the destruction of Zhaitan, but I can’t see them as an industrial powerhouse, either.

The Zephyrites and Queen Jennah did do some fundraising back during the Festival of the Four Winds, but LA is a big place, and it’s possible much of the Zephyrite funds were lost when they were attacked and their ships crashed.

From a lore point of view LA is an independent city, or more accurately a city-state. Having foreign powers come in to rebuild things is kinda odd.

In the festival of the four winds I think they rebuilt it slightly and I have the feeling it will slowly be rebuilt over time because I do agree leaving the most important city destroyed wouldn’t really make much sense.

Yeah they added some of the vendors and stuff again. Actually the festival was intended to gain resources to help the reconstruction effort in earnest. Although I guess since the zypherites got blown up in Season 1…

True, although i think most people have issue with the fact that we’re not seeing any changes big or small.

Lion’s Arch is a sovereign pirate city-nation. Their motto is “From ruin we prosper”. The only people repairing Lion’s Arch are the pirates that reside there. (EDIT: I had to change the last sentence because of the forum’s overtly strict censorship system. :P)

The Asuran government in Rata Sum won’t help Lion’s Arch. Why? There are no political or social connections between the two nations. Counselor Phlunt’s behavior also demonstrates that the Asuran government only care about themselves (See LS2: Episode 3 & 4).

the asura had quite a big trading post in LA, they even saw profit in rebuilding LA the first time it was destroyed (or at least, the LA lion).
they do care but they have problems of them self, you know, with all the vines taking down their land and such…..

Exactly, the only people who could help LA would by Kryta considering that the city is within the humans territory. Even if the Asura wanted to they could not just come from the sky with bags of gold without starting a conflict.

If it will be a copy paste of the old LA (with a few stitches replaced) it will be a major fail. That town needs both a looks update and a technical update to reduce the lag that u encountered there. If u don’t meet both of them or if u meet 1/2 of them it will be a very big fail for most players. U will only cater to a few/niche players just because of laziness.

Also “Rome” happened thousands of years ago. Even if it’s a saying..should we still use it in our day and time? It’s kinda reminiscent of how the game development’s speed don’t u think?

Ha, this made me laugh pretty hard. It’s true though.
Also, yes it would be super amazing to, over the course of several months, see workers rebuilding Lions Arch into a new town while still incorporating the destruction of Lions Arch post Scarlet, similar to how they rebuilt it from the first time from GW1 destruction. (Omg, run on sentence.)

Yes. Even with modern day technology, that adage still very much applies. Because where technology advances in complexity, so does the projects it can be used in.

If they were using any sort of realistic time set for the rebuilding, I wouldn’t be all that surprised if its going to take 1-2+ years.

  • The removing of the wreckage of the Breachmaker alone will take months if not a full year, since they have to dismantle it piece by piece and bring in heavy equipment to pull the pieces out of the water.
  • Housing development, or any sort of structurally development really, will take just as long. They have to clear the land first and foremost, fill in all holes and/or faults the laser cannons and explosives caused, make sure that land is stable, and they then can either lay foundation or just start building. A ramshackle house might be able to be put up in a day, but anything beyond that will probably take a week to a month. (Depending on how large a work force, materials, and funding to pay the workers of course.)
  • LA’s farmland and waterways might have to be periodically checked and cleansed of any poisons the TA might have introduced.
  • Talks with the citizens and refugee groups will have to happen. The rebuilding will probably displace some people from where they use to live and commendations will have to be made.

And the cherry to top all of that, depending on just how the Captain’s Council might like to run things, any of those listed above might need permits. Permits as far as the eye can see.

P.s.: Oh, and apart from LA, someone may should check DR as well. It has one center hub, and the rest 95% of the city is empty. Those really nice districts should be the hubs, offering better FPS & Environment to the players… I mean, Tyrians.

It would be neat to have future events where we help with the reconstruction of the city.

I do not see the residents removing the remnants of the Breachmaker, the pieces are too huge and are now part of the landscape as are the gouges and readjusted terrain…. I would rather see them utilized in interesting ways much like what was destroyed was an interesting conglomeration of ships etc. that followed the natural contours of the land. It could also open some interesting small story lines to follow – maybe have some hidden achievements for finding someone and following their story over a period of time.

In my opinion this is a great opportunity to present the tengu to the GW2 world.
Lions arch is close to the gate to the tengu land. what if the tengu decided to claim lions arch as their own to use the former city info structure and build on it a new town.

it can be an interesting part of the living story, a tengu delegation come to lions arch to find a way to claim the city, thy want to do it in a peaceful way, to create a town that is partly tengu and partly pirate. The delegation meet a patrol of lionguagds while exploring the ruins of the city, one of them a young noble draw his weapon and raise his hands in order to welcome the lionguards (this is not part of the lore but might fit a behavior of a different race), the lionguard captain have doubts, the tengu doesn’t look as a threatening enemy but he is drawing weapon, while the human captain ponder what to do next a young archer kill the tengu after misinterpreting one of his gestures, an action that might start conflict between the two races.

Consider this, in any rebuilding of a destroyed area/city, what do you start with…the infrastructure…so the first things that you would/should be seeing rebuilt are the bridges/roads/walkways, sewer system if damaged, etc. Second, the next thing should be necessary projects for allowing the inhabitants to return, this would be markets, etc.(especially since everyone is practically living in refugee areas that are outside of LA). Residential should be next with the final bit the assthetics(parks and such if they exist.) At least that’s in theory, with it having been started by pirates and now an all-comers cosmopolitan city, who knows what kind of politics(read corruption) is taking place.

Of course, you could also take this to the extreme and have the players help gather the necessary resources for the rebuilding with insanely epic resource gathering short time events. I won’t elaborate for fear of the backlash, unless there is demand for it.

I’m hopeful it will feel more like a city than a few scattered buildings around a bay. I was rather surprised when the devs announced that it was in-lore a city of 40,000 people, 35,000 of whom perished in Scarlet’s assault. That was just … huge.

It’s too well positioned as a trade hub not to be rebuilt, though perhaps it might lose some of its independence in the process because there’s not really anyone local left to do the work. While resources would realistically be limited for a long time to replace the kind of loss than canonically happened here, I think a game world can compress things a tad because you can’t take several RL years to bring such changes about.

So I’d like it to become a proper urban center, akin to the racial cities, but with political changes reflecting the disaster that struck there.

(I don’t hold out that much hope, though. Tyria doesn’t seem to have reeled into a terrible recession as it should have with its economic heart cut out, nor has that woman in the Salma District stopped wondering why the caravan from LA is late. I don’t think ANet is doing an S M Stirling level analysis of demographic impact of world-changing disaster /grins)

Allow players to donate resources to the rebuilding of LA. once milestones have been met, a section of the city/a building/landmark/etc has been restored.

For example: Stage one, restoring the statue at the centre of LA: Takes 500,000 copper 100,000 iron, which players could donate to a foreman npc. Not only would this be a totally awesome and interactive way for the community to restore LA (and feel more a part of the world as a whole) but it would also be great at draining the economy of some of the hyper-saturated resources on the TP

Well, look at the new “Berlin Brandenburg Airport” in the city of Berlin, the capital of Germany. Work was started in 2006 and it was planned to be finished in 2010…. actually they think now it will take at least till 2018 …

Sadly WoW doesn’t have much of an living world as you could expect. They were working on getting one of the statues in Stormwind done for four years. Also some towers were a bit repaired. Thats the most you could expect. So I think ANet is doing a really good job with the living world and really seeing how it slowly gets better and not .. just suddenly .. like in WoW ;_;
