Okay, so I’ve got a theory about Ceara/Scarlet and I’d like to toss it out and see what people think about it. Maybe get some holes knocked into it, if it comes to that.

Ceara, from the moment of her awakening, hated the idea of being forced into a path or destiny. She studied how everything interacted and how to manipulate them, but she hated the idea that she herself was also just a moving part in the whole. During this time, the “presence” she felt was actually the part of her that knew she couldn’t rise above her nature.

In Omadd’s machine, Ceara was finally forced to confront the truth that she IS a part of the whole, and not a special snowflake that rises above the rules. It could manipulate her just as easily as she manipulated anyone else, and for Ceara there was no way to avoid it.

This caused Ceara’s mind to break and create a new personality, Scarlet Briar. Because Scarlet simply started to exist, she felt she was beyond the workings of the world, and free from them. Ceara was trapped, Scarlet was not.

However, something of the Ceara personality still remained. Without the illusion of being free from the Eternal Alchemy, she eventually became the voice that whispered in Scarlet’s head, telling her to follow the path that was laid out for her. It was Ceara whispering in Scarlet’s head and trying to make her do things, not Mordremoth.

You may recall that during the final battle to kill Scarlet, Kasmeer called her Ceara. Scarlet’s reply was an almost desperate reply of “That is not my name!” and “Stop calling me that! It’s not my name!” while trying to silence Kasmeer’s illusions. She couldn’t stand the idea that she was really Ceara, still trapped within the same patterns as the people she’d manipulated.

It was something to do with dragons. Maybe “Find Mord before he awakens”? Or, “Rally the races of Tyria into a fighting force.” (That would explain why Trahearne got stuck doing it when he’s not a people person.)

Whatever it was, it got all twisted around in her head.

Some brilliant ideas here but I doubt any of them are what ANet had in mind.
