While I was battling centaurs in Harathi Hinterlands, I noticed that an old bug has been fixed.
The Modniir Hunters are female, but since launch they have had male voices and used male battle grunts. While their voices are still male, the battle grunts have been fixed, and are now female.
This is a small bug which has gone unnoticed since launch. It does not affect gameplay quality. So why has arenanet fixed it now? The fix coincides with the announcement of LS Season 2.
From Guild Wars 1, we know that the Maguuma was heavily populated by centaurs. Taking that, and this bug fix, into consideration, I think the centaurs could play a major role as we get new maps and living story in Maguuma.
Other “villain” groups—the Krait, Nightmare Court, Flame Legion, Sons of Svanir, ect have gotten comparatively much more attention then the centaurs—yet the centaurs are a large force. It makes sense they would have a place in the upcoming story.

The centaurs use the same death grunts as the Jotun now, which I find a bit disconcerting. :/

Are you sure they’re female? That pic looks very much like a male centaur to me.

The one in the picture is male, I believe, as that is the model used for Ventari. But there are some female centaurs amongst the Harathi (and Modniir I think). But they had female voices… What’s weird amongst the Modniir is that there are some with female voices but male-like models, iirc. For both Modniir and Harathi, there are male and female of each type of unit. So you’ll have male Modniir Hunters and female Modniir Hunters for example.

Anyways, centaurs in the Maguuma would not be surprising given the fact that in GW1 there was a tribe – which we now know as the Harathi – living in what is now the Maguuma Wastes. It wouldn’t be impossible if some tribes of the Harathi had managed to escape the Modniir’s dominance. Whether they’re hostile or peaceful is anyone’s guess but since the hostility is very old, they’re either descendants of Ventari’s teachings (which would be weird given the lack of mention of them – but not impossible since he was originally further west than what is now the Grove), or they’re hostile. I can’t see any other option there.

Dear ANet writers,
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

Nah, it’s definitely female. Sex/Gender dimorphism among the Modniir is much more subtle then it is among the Harathi.
Harathi seem to have no gender roles—so they have male and female models of the same profession (tramplers, ect.). Modniir, on the other hand, do seem to have gender roles—all the magic users and warriors are male, while all the hunters/rangers are female. Modniir dimorphism is similar to Ogre dimorphism—the females cover their chests, and have slimmer torsos. That said, you’re correct that Ventari uses that model. I imagine it’s an oversight on the part of the devs—that or Ventari was ultra-feminine haha.
I agree that it’s unlikely there would be peaceful centaurs. However, if the Maguuma centaurs are separate from the armies ruled by the Modniir, they may be willing to work with us if forced to it—perhaps to combat Mordremoth’s minions, or Modniir who would enslave them. Perhaps we’ll see a centaur character similar to Zhed from Nightfall.
It’s also possible that Mordemoth will corrupt the Maguuma centaur population, and/or they’ll be having interactions with the bandits who infest Brisban—whether those interactions are hostile or friendly.

Going by season 1, we should expect to see new enemies, or at least new factions, rather than just old ones. The living story mobs have almost always been souped up; Molten alliance, Aetherblade, Toxic Alliance, Watchnights etc.

If we do see old races like Centaurs, I’d be surprised if they didn’t have new models.

The models and voices could have been tidied up for the Queen’s Pavilion.

The Maguuma centaurs are/were the Harathi.

So changes done to the Modniir are most likely irrelevant when talking about centaurs in the Maguuma, since they come from the Shiverpeaks. It would be changes to the Harathi that would matter most on this topic.
