So, yeah. He’s again talking about “world-changing events” and how the Living story changes the world constantly. Where are these world-changing events? I wouldn’t categorize LS updates as “major releases” either.

I find this bit ironic:

We had railed against traditional MMO mechanics like quest chains that force the world to be static and unchanging, and instead had built a world full of dynamic events where players working together can actually change the state of the world.

Where are these events that actually change the state of the world? Centaurs capturing a camp which then gets captured back 20 minutes later?

And before you say “they’re coming”, remember that this was a retrospective post about the 1st year of Guild Wars 2. Not a look into the future.

Also lol @ the “more votes cast than in the 2012 Czech presidential election”. Could they vote as many times as they wanted?

lol yeah. The changes is not of the “world”, more like “Lion’s-Arch-changing” events. LA had changed multiple times over the course of Living Story.

Yup, nothing major with all the LS releases. The events in LS are miniscule in comparison to the rest of Tyria. It’s probably only as big as the Claw of Jormag event.

Where are these events that actually change the state of the world? Centaurs capturing a camp which then gets captured back 20 minutes later?

I actually like the constant back and forth when fighting the centaurs. And the reason it gets recaptured is because we are not actively participating in it. If we station there and guard the area, like the NPCs do, we can keep those camp indefinitely. That, IMO, is a well designed dynamic event.

Also lol @ the “more votes cast than in the 2012 Czech presidential election”. Could they vote as many times as they wanted?

Yup that is a big stretch in their part. It was probably meant to be a joke.

Full set of 5 unique skills for both dual-wield weapon sets: P/P and D/D – Make it happen
PvE – DD/CS/AC – If that didn’t work, roll a Reaper or Revenant.

I thought a lot of the article held up nicely.. except in the same respect that the OP mentions. I honestly think a lot of the problem is really tied to the Personal Story. Things like the continuous battles between the Centaurs and Humans do make sense within the context of the world. Things like Orr still being what it is, however, do not given what happens in the PS. Even noteworthy PS locations like the Order headquarters can’t change by necessity regardless of how the world itself supposedly changes because that would break the PS.

The fact that ANet spent so many resources on the PS means it’s unlikely they’ll ever give it a total redo, but it’s very existense is one of the key reasons why we’re not able to see any real change in the world. And that, quite frankly, is very disappointing.

I was trying to find the player retention statistics for some time, and when I saw numbers in this post I was hoping they’d mention that as well, but sadly they didn’t.

I would really like to find out how many people log in daily/weakly/monthly and compare it to the numbers from say beginning of the calendar year.

Anyway, I liked the article for the most part.. It wasn’t a smooth ride but this is the only MMO I’ve stayed active in for an entire year, so as far as I’m concerned they did great.

Only the addition of Southsun Cove has been “world-changing”. No other major update has. They’ve all been temporary, creating a parallel “living” world alongside the world that was launched.

Yea, yet another discouraging post from Arenanet. They call this stuff major releases? World changing events? The stuff that was already in the game is more world changing than this weak “story”.

The original Dynamic Events change the world more than this latest invasion crap does.

I appreciate the critique, but try to maintain a form of credibility. To say you’ve never seen a LS event change the world permanently does not help you in that.

Southsun Cove is its own zone. The Karka are confined there. I guess you can call it “world changing”, but who even goes there nowadays?

Calling these updates major is a bit out of touch really. The only credit to their name is the speed of the updates, that really is unprecedented. The rest of the article is out of touch with how the game actually plays out, which is not very world-changing and more like a new carnival every two weeks.

I’ve said it often a few months ago when I cared for the game’s future more then I do now, but they need to inject far more permanent changes into the living story that become an organic part of the world. Both Southsun events did that, but unfortunately they were not well-received because of the difficulty. I blame the large amount of people that claim to want challenges but in reality only want easy, undisturbed farming.

I too thought this was a bit overboard for a PR post but hey that’s part of the industry today, gotta make people believe in your product yeah know.

If all of that energy and creativity were taken from the marketing/PR department and actually put into the design flaws of the current state of the game and fixing the mistakes made over the past year imagine what the game would be like now.
