What I think of Season 2?
I think, in all honesty, it’s not the pacing that is the problem but rather the length of the story. It’s far too short for it to accomplish much. The pacing is fine and realistic, but there doesn’t seem to be enough ‘episodes’ per se for it to cover a full story. Though I suspect we won’t kill Mordremoth anyway this season, and that’ll happen in season 3. That, or Mordremoth could be part of an upcoming expansion.
After all, ArenaNet has been saying they have something big going on in the background that they can’t reveal details about, and seeing as NCsoft said an expansion would come out in 2015… (And before naysayers mention the fact they said 2014 some time back, that could’ve been the original plan but it had to get pushed back due to development taking longer than expected.)
Before I begin, know I am very grateful for the Living Story updates, that I am. I like the idea of episodic content every couple of weeks letting my character’s story unfold. With that being said, I like to say that Season 2 seems to have a lot of padding in it before moving on to something good.
First we got looking at stuff on Dry Top, then negotiating with the world leaders, then we help them do their errands, then do a meeting, then start to move out and then Caithe has to but in. Despite what we get, I get a feeling that the pacing is moving unnecessarily slow and it seems like in the end, we would accomplish very little in this season.
This is just the major negative I have with this season. I never played the first season at all, so I don’t know if was even worse in terms of it’s pacing. Either way, I’d like to hear your thoughts .
The pacing is an improvement on season 1. It was a series of epic set pieces with no real interconnecting story. Player feedback was taken on board and the story was essentially brought together (mostly) at the end.
This season was fine right up until last patch. The story seems to rely on cliffhangers and asking more questions than giving out answers. That is not a good way to tell a story – you only use this technique so often before your audience tires and runs out of patience. There is also no obvious end anywhere near in sight, even though I’m sure realistically there is.
I enjoy the gameplay side of things, but right now the story is getting too bogged down and distracted. It just needs to get on with it. I’m not sure if the up and coming patch will solve that either since it has the feel of a linked side story instead.
It has taken so far nearly 6 months to get well, not very far. In that time, many of us had gone through the much larger personal story (albeit considerably lower in quality gameplay wise).
If they insist on this format going forward, then I’d rather they abolished the “seasons” and just added to the story every 2 weeks. Then at least we wouldn’t have the feeling of “this is going to end soon…but nothing is really progressing”
