What is that Vine doing to the WP!
Haven’t checked any of these waypoints (gonna try to remember tonight to though), but to those that have, can you still use (waypoint to) them? Or do they become contested?

No, you can still use ’em…for now.

Yes, so far tunnels waypoint in skrittsburg is in the worst shape, but it’s still functional.
I’m surprised that the Tunnels Waypoint in Brisban is still function properly by letting us still teleport to it. :o
Attached is the path. Some of them i notice are flickering, some aren’t but have vines and some have both the flicker and the vine.
Pretty much pointing to Lion’s Arch, where the Breachmaker disturbed the ley line. I wonder if the next map we get is the one between LA and Kessex hills, and not the rest of Dry Top.
Maybe now we’re able to see how the ley line continues, the vines seem to follow it.
Hmm… I’m not sure about that exactly. If it was following the ley line surge that the Breachmaker sent off, it would have went through Metrica Province, since the surge was clearly shown to go through the ley line intersection beneath the Thaumanova Reactor during the little cinematic.
True. I forgot about the cinematic.

Well, I also wondered why that one wasn’t going through Thaumanova, but I think it just splits into two like the one on the top left here – http://youtu.be/MjfybC7pm-I?t=15s. From the movie, the ley line’s also going through an area with human-style windmills, and those are definitely neither in Caledon nor in Metrica.
The area with the human style windmills could possibly be the zone between Kessex and Lion’s Arch.

But now that I think of it… shouldn’t Dominion of Winds be there instead?
A big enough reason for Tengu to make their move, though.
Went on a walk with Arctinus and stumbled upon this vine tickling a WP in Kessex ^^

I’m wondering if the flickering has been there since the end of LS season 1, after the drill punctured the ley line, and we’re only now noticing it because the vines are starting to follow it backwards.

Mmmmm i have a theory. We know now that dragons eat magic. (ex: zhaitan´s mouth) can be this vine looking for a magic fountain to feed Morde. I think Morde is awake but not enough strong to do something by itself.
(Sorry my bad english)
PS: Hope vines dont go near Rata Sum i dont want a second Thaumanova explosión.
This is amazing.
I have to admit, all the hush-hush while we keep downloading new small patches is pretty interesting. It’s literally growing and most people have no idea. Now they’re wrapping around the WPs.
Wonder if any Asura say anything about it. Or any NPCs for that matter.

It hasn’t, it’s actually spreading. I went through them last night and it didn’t reach as far as it does now.

Nope. It wasn’t doing this in Dry Top last Tuesday at the launch of the update. And now it’s moving East. There are now three vines in Kissex trying to tap on the Way Points. So far though only the one Way Point in the cave is actually being grabbed and wrapped around. I’m surprised Dry Top isn’t being devoured yet.
Still no signs in Timberline Falls yet though. This is kind of exciting.
This is pretty awesome. Things like this make the world seem much more alive.
I’m going to go check out some WP’s now!
It’s actually quite a feat they have pulled off. Looking back at the rebuilding of the Lion Statue in LA (post mad king), it only got repaired over the course of patches. So to pull off this growth deal with the vines (even if you can’t see them grown live, if it requires a map change) is a pretty cool thing.
I love this game! This whole new LS2 is really looking like it will be a super cool story line. The fact that Anet is adding in things that players are now seeing and going “wait a minute, that wasn’t there yesterday”……people now watching the vines grow….trying to figure out where it’s going and what it’s doing…..talk about sucking some of the playerbase into it all! I can’t wait to get on tonight and check out some of these areas and maybe see more growth and the vine continuing on to…….where???
I just love this stuff!!!! Well done, Anet!!!!

I heard rumor that there are new books in the Durmand Priory as well, maybe someone who can go in-game right now can check? I think there’s one about waypoints.
Now there’s a vine at the Prosperity Waypoint! This is awesome, it makes the world feel alive! Good job Arenanet!

5,000 gems?
And here I thought my 1,000 gems and 10s per use fee was a bit over the top.

I found the book in the Priory, it reads as follows:
“Erosion and Waypoint Stability.”
Some waypoints gradually fail over time, while other thrive. Current theories tie the failing waypoints to terrain that hinders the flow of energies. However, we have not been able to predict where a waypoint will thrive or fail. The specific conditions required for failure remain unknown. We have no other recourse but to apply a trail-and-error method to waypoint placement. Those that fail are dismantled to keep the waypoint grid strong.
So what does this mean for these waypoints?
Also, there appears to be a biography of Scarlet Briar here too.
And a book about ley lines.
(edited by I See No Tomorrow.7302)
What if thriving waypoints (waypoints that don’t erode) are waypoints that are on ley lines so that they can draw magic from them? Mordremeth then uses those leylines to send seeds through them which automatically attach to the first waypoint they pass. He then extends his network by using the grown vines to send the next batch of seeds to the next waypoint(s) in the line. The vines can send messages back to Mordremeth and are identified by the waypoint they are attached to. In this way Mordremeth can send his presence throughout Tyria with no problem.
Honestly, and I don’t expect this to be a popular opinion or anything, but I hope the waypoint system is removed or otherwise rendered unusable. And again, I fully do not expect that this will happen, since the system is so entrenched that there would be outcry. But hear me out nonetheless.
I remember Prince Rurik being exiled from Ascalon. I remember preparing for the harrowing trek across the Shiverpeaks to the “promised land” of Kryta, knowing that whatever is on the other side would be better than the terrifying experience of running a gauntlet of charr stalkers with screechy arrows, or venturing through the breach in the Great Northern Wall in the post-Searing Kingdom of Ascalon. And I remember stepping out onto the sands of Kryta for the first time with Jeremy Soule’s magical score playing, and feeling a genuine sense of relief and exhaustion at the journey.
This is a sense of journey and exploration that I feel should be present not only in every MMO, but in every RPG. But this is killed by the idea of being able to teleport anywhere in the world at any time. It’s almost never mentioned by NPC’s and ignored whenever it becomes inconvenient, and that really makes it feel disconnected from the lore. But if it wasn’t disconnected from the lore, the entire story would have to be contorted around it (for example, why can’t Seraph Belinda Delaqua just teleport back to Fort Salma and waypoint a contingent of soldiers to Tangle Root instead of running all the way back). Waypoints are never referred to in the novels or earlier promotional material either, and it really feels like they were added because for whatever reason it was decided that there weren’t enough asura gates. And come on, for something that is supposedly so core to the game’s lore, who seriously uses an asura gate? The only advantage to them is that they are free, and that is something that is completely at odds with the lore, by the way.
I have a number of other immersion-based complaints about waypoints, such as the fact that they completely remove tension from combat—you’d be a lot more careful if faced with the prospect of dying alone out in the wilderness with the knowledge that you’d be sent much further back. It’d add tension to even the many “easy” battles in vanilla zones, and it’d make you consider bringing an adventurer buddy with you. It’s also, of course, responsible for one of the more immersion-breaking styles of play that is seemingly promoted by ArenaNet, which is the hundreds-strong zerg teleporting around the world killing dragon champions like clockwork. The sense of a huge Vigil force massing and organising to take on Tequatl the Sunless isn’t really there when the army spontaneously appears, slays the beast, and then spontaneously disappears to autoattack the Shatterer to death on the other side of the planet.
But yeah, these are just my personal feelings on waypoints, and I recognise that they’re an integral enough part of the gameplay that it’d be basically impossible to completely overhaul them without causing some serious upset. I don’t expect them to be disabled in favour of asura gates whatsoever. I’d just like that to be the case.
What if thriving waypoints (waypoints that don’t erode) are waypoints that are on ley lines so that they can draw magic from them?
This seems very likely, and GW1 players should recall why. The Central Transfer Chamber in was an Asura gate hub built on top of “a major pocket of magical energy” (quite possibly a ley line junction), which also happened to be the resting place of Primordus, who’s head was mistaken for a statue. The town’s in-game description also states that the gates are directly powered by this magic.
Polestar to the vast wheel of Asura Gates, the Central Transfer Chamber is a magical and architectural marvel constructed atop a major pocket of magical energy. The Asura channel that raw power to fuel all the gates in the network and link them together via this great crossroads of transport. Most of the major gates across Tyria lead to this location.
If the Asura were indeed using a ley line junction to power their original gate network, then it’s very likely that the Asura-built waypoint network would rely on similar sources of power. Or even be utilizing the the ley lines themselves as conduits for transit through the waypoints. Given the apparent lack of understanding of ley lines, this could be happening without them even realizing that they were being used for anything more than a power source.

I mentioned that to some friends earlier today. If waypoints were in some way disrupted, people would think it was a sign of mounts being added.

Anyone that’s up on the lore that can explain a few things? I mean I thought waypoints were more of a game mechanic to deal with travel and it was more of a time saver than an actual in-lore thing. Asura Gates are the in-lore travel devices, that if waypoints are actually in-lore make absolutely no sense. Why have asura gates if everyone can travel via waypoints? That makes the whole original story look dumb because several portions of it are based around asura gates. Otherwise it would have been plonk down a waypoint and lets teleport an army in. Other places it doesn’t make sense either because when waypoints get contested it’s the enemies ignoring a device that will lead to their downfall. For example you don’t think the centaurs would blow up the waypoint in the middle of their base? Or zhaitan have the ones all over his territory destroyed? Or scarlet would have let any of them in Lion’s arch remain?
It seems like a massive plothole. Don’t get me wrong the whole vine thing is really cool, but storywise it seems kind of dumb. I really hope they don’t try to use this as some big plot point because that would seriously be on the level of scarlet. “Oh, yeah the dragon used the fast travel things that all other bad guys in Tyria seemingly forgot existed to corrupt everything”.
At first I just thought it was just one more game mechanic to facilitate the player’s gaming, but then I saw on wiki that it had some story behind it. But yes, taking it at this viewpoint it doesn’t make much sense storywise indeed. Or maybe the asura have made it then only certain races or people specifically could use, what explain why enemies like centaurs wouldn’t.
Here is what I found on wiki about them: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Waypoints#Trivia See also: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Technician_Penn#Scouting_report

Better keep some merchant and traders in your bags just in case. Could be a lot of walking.
A vine is also at the way point in Fort Salma. There is also a member of the priory stacking crates next to it that have artifacts from the tower of nightmares in them.( I don’t know if that’s new) My only gripe is there is not a single npc seems to even notice the vine at all.

I always felt the Waypoints work as they do for us. The INDIVIDUAL must have encountered that waypoint at least once. That’s why you don’t see many NPCs using them, many don’t leave their particular area.
It would also explain why Mordremeth is cutting them off. He’s not cutting them off from the Pact, he’s cutting them off from the individuals who participated in Zhaitan’s downfall and were the thorn (pun not intended) in his side for the past year…US. He’s being incredibly genre savvy, as he saw through Scarlet for an entire year, so he knows how much of a threat we are.

A friend just pointed this out to me. I have no idea how long he’s been up there…but we are being watched. No indication that the centaur are related to Mordy, but corruption is always a possibility. Or they end up being allies, seeing that their terrority is under assault by a dragon.

This is getting very interesting :-D
I still think the waypoints and ley lines are connected somehow, although that would mean there are a lot of ley lines in the world, because of the huge amount of waypoints.
Huge but interesting opinion.
I agree with you to some extent, at the moment there are just too many waypoints. I don’t feel like it is necessary to remove them all though. Keep them on major locations, as a concession.
For example, in a map like Kessex Hills there could be waypoints at;
- Fort Salma
- Ireko Tradecamp
- Black Haven

I’ll point to an interview from Angel:
Angel McCoy : Absolutely! Waypoints are asuran devices, and all the money you spend to use them goes straight into the coffers at Rata Sum. The asura have been developing these magi-matter-transportive devices for centuries and have seeded them across the world. They’re often contested if creatures or bad guys disrupt the traffic coming through them, but the asura work hard to maintain this money-making web of mini-gates. The fee, in case you wondered, is automatically separated from your person and transported directly into a guarded room in Rata Sum. The coins drop in and pile up there, and workers put them in carts and carry them to the vaults.
Disclaimer: Said information is not found in game and is thus malleable and prone to change.
Im not a centaur expert but i think is more probably that the centaur give us problem than be an ally. Centaur are territorial and aggresive creatures. I imagine this centaur is watching us and preparing some interesting problems (ambush etc..).
